How do you recognize a healthy Hamster or Dwarf Hamster?
Hamsters are generally healthy animals. If there is something wrong, it is not always easy to see because they can hide it well. A healthy hamster looks like this:
- Has a dense, shiny coat
- Has sparkling and clear clean eyes
- Has a nice dry pink nose
- Has a clean ass
- Urinates and drinks normally (urine angle soaking wet within a day is alarming)
- Eats and drinks well / Is of a good weight, but not too fat
- Is healthy, active and takes care of himself
How do I know if my hamster is sick?
Look for changes in behavior, appetite, fur, breathing, or droppings. A sick hamster may be lethargic, sleep a lot, eat less, or suddenly become more aggressive.
When is it wise to go to the vet with your Hamster or Dwarf Hamster?
It is advisable to consult a veterinarian if you experience the following symptoms:
Dental problems
Drooling, runny nose and eyes, protruding teeth, not eating, losing weight, eating foreign materials that are softer than food.
Skin
Bald spots, lots of scratching, scabs, wounds, bumps and lumps
Other
Wet and dirty bottom, drinking a lot, falling over, listless, different shape and color of the droppings
What are common health problems in hamsters?
Examples include: wet tail, respiratory problems, eye infections, diarrhea, parasites, dental problems and skin problems. Early recognition is important!
When should I treat my hamster for parasites?
Hamsters that suffer from itching, flaking or bald spots may have parasites such as mites or lice. In that case, use a safe anti-parasite product specifically for small rodents. Always treat according to the instructions.
Is anti-parasite medication safe for my hamster?
Yes, provided you use a product that is specially developed for hamsters and other small rodents. Always pay attention to the weight of the animal and consult a veterinarian if in doubt.
What can I do if I have respiratory problems?
You can recognize respiratory problems by sneezing, wheezing or wet eyes/nose. Provide dust-free ground cover and use supportive herbs or respiratory pellets. If in doubt, always consult a veterinarian.
How do I prevent health problems in my hamster?
Good care, hygiene, proper nutrition, a spacious enclosure with enrichment and regular checks on your hamster are the basis for good health.
What is wet tail and what should I do?
Wet tail is a serious bacterial infection that occurs mainly in young hamsters. Symptoms are wet tail, diarrhea and listlessness. Go to the vet immediately!
Can I provide preventive support to my hamster?
Certainly! With herbs such as echinacea or nettle, special resistance boosters , extra vitamins or adapted nutrition you can support the immune system.
What belongs in a hamster first aid kit?
A basic first aid kit contains: eye ointment, wound ointment, dewormer (anti-parasite), tweezers, gauze, disinfectant spray (for animals), nail scissors and a small heating mat.
What can I do about diarrhea?
Do not feed fresh food, offer lots of fibre such as hay and support with herbal mixes or pellets for digestion. Consult the vet if it persists.
How do I support my hamster during recovery?
Provide rest, warmth and easily digestible food. Herbs and additional food supplements can help with recovery from infections or after surgery. If your hamster is not eating well, force-feeding may be an option.
Are there any supplements for hamster health?
Yes! There are safe supplements such as vitamin drops , resistance herbs or digestive support pellets especially for small rodents.
