Hamsters and Dwarf hamsters love fruit, both fresh and dried fruit is loved by the animals. In this category we have put together a selection of fruits for hamsters that are also really tasty. Fruit should be given as a snack, not as standard food.
Diabetes and fruit
Hamsters with a genetic predisposition to diabetes should only be fed fruit in very limited quantities. Hamsters with diabetes should not be fed fruit under any circumstances.
Dried fruit can be given as a snack. For young, pregnant and weak animals dried fruit can be a very good pick-me-up. Dried fruit, such as apple cubes, can be used very well as a reward or as a surprise in the forage bed.
Can a hamster eat dried fruit?
Yes, hamsters can eat dried fruit , but in moderation. Dried fruit is naturally high in natural sugars , making it more of a tasty snack or reward than a regular part of the diet. It is important to only give unsweetened and pure dried fruit , so without added sugars, honey or preservatives.
Is Dried Fruit Better Than Fresh Fruit for Hamsters?
A big advantage of dried fruit is the low moisture content. Due to a high moisture content, such as in fresh fruit, the animals can get diarrhea. This is not the case with vegetables, for example, but it is with fruit. The animals find fruit so tasty that they tend to eat more of it and therefore (in the case of fresh fruit) take in too much moisture. That is why dried fruit is better to give.
Which dried fruit is suitable for hamsters?
There are several types of dried fruit that are safe for hamsters, such as:
- Dried apple (without seeds)
- Dried banana
- Dried strawberry
- Dried currants
These pieces can be offered as enrichment or reward in a foraging toy or simply from the hand.
How much dried fruit can a hamster eat?
Dried fruit is healthy in small amounts, but because of the high sugar content, you should give it very sparingly . Think of:
- 1 to 2 small pieces per week for a dwarf hamster
- 2 to 3 small pieces per week for a Syrian hamster
Please note: what seems small to us, can quickly become a lot to a hamster! Think of a piece the size of a pea.
Is dried fruit healthy for hamsters?
In limited quantities, dried fruit can provide healthy fiber, vitamins, and minerals . It also stimulates hamsters' foraging behavior , which contributes to mental stimulation and activity.
But: too much dried fruit can lead to obesity , diabetes (especially in Campbell's and hybrid dwarf hamsters) and dental problems . So always give it in moderation!
