Product description

Trixie Plastic Igloo House 23 cm for Rats and Guinea Pigs

The Trixie Plastic Igloo House 23 cm is a practical shelter for rats and guinea pigs. The round igloo shape creates a sheltered resting place where your pet can retreat, sleep, or sit quietly for a while. The house has an open bottom, allowing you to place it directly on the bedding and easily lift it for inspection or cleaning.

The house is made of plastic. This is especially useful for animals that soil or mark their enclosures more quickly, such as rats. Plastic absorbs moisture less quickly than wood and is therefore easy to wipe clean. There is a small step on the side, so animals can also use the house as a raised platform or lookout spot.

Pros of the Trixie Plastic Igloo House 23 cm

Easy to clean: plastic is practical for animals that quickly make their house dirty or mark their territory.
Sheltered igloo shape: gives your animal a quiet place to retreat.
Open bottom: pleasant for ventilation and handy for checking the sleeping position.
With a step: some animals also use the house as a raised platform or lookout point.
Suitable as an extra hiding place: especially handy for rats and as an additional house for guinea pigs.

Why choose a plastic igloo house?

A hiding house is part of a nice enclosure. Animals like to have a place where they can sit out of sight for a while. For rats, a plastic house is especially practical because rats may regularly mark areas in their enclosure. A plastic house is therefore easier to clean than a wooden one.

A plastic house can also be useful for guinea pigs, especially as an extra hiding place alongside a larger, spacious base area. Guinea pigs use houses to rest, shelter, and feel safer in their enclosure. Because the opening of this house is approximately 10 x 10 cm, it is particularly suitable for smaller or slimmer guinea pigs. For larger guinea pigs, the Trixie Igloo Plastic House 29 cm is often a better choice.

The open bottom makes this house practical for daily use. You place the house directly on the bedding and easily lift it up when you want to check or clean the resting area. This is convenient, as some animals urinate or collect food scraps in or around their hiding place.

For which animals is this igloo house suitable?

  • Rat: very suitable as a plastic shelter. Rats like to use these types of houses to rest together, sleep, or sit in a sheltered spot.
  • Dwarf Enclosure: suitable as a spacious house, depending on the group size and the layout of the enclosure.
  • Guinea pig: suitable as an extra hiding place, especially for smaller or slimmer guinea pigs. For larger guinea pigs, the 10 x 10 cm opening may be tight.
  • Mouse: usually very large as a hiding place. For mice, smaller houses are often more logical and cozier.
  • Dwarf hamster and hamster: usually not the most logical choice due to size and material. Wooden houses, tunnels, or smaller hiding places are often more suitable for hamsters.
  • Gerbil: less suitable as a permanent home, because gerbils like to gnaw and can damage plastic.
  • Rabbit: this 23 cm house is too small for rabbits. It is better to choose a larger hiding place for rabbits.
  • Chinchilla and degu: not the first choice, because these animals are strong gnawers and can damage plastic.

Use with group animals

For social animals such as rats, it is pleasant to have multiple hiding places in the enclosure. Rats often like to lie together, but also want the option to avoid each other for a moment. This little house can be suitable for multiple rats, depending on the size of the animals and the group.

For guinea pigs, we recommend this house primarily as an extra shelter alongside a larger hiding place. Guinea pigs like to have enough room to easily walk in and out of a hiding place. For multiple guinea pigs together, this house is usually not spacious enough as a primary hiding place.

How do you use the Trixie Igloo House?

  • Place the little house on a flat, stable spot in the enclosure.
  • Place the house on a clean layer of bedding or on a solid surface.
  • Check if the opening is wide enough for your animal.
  • For group animals, use multiple hiding places so that each animal has a choice.
  • Clean the little house regularly and let it dry thoroughly before putting it back.

Combine the house with, for example, rat products , guinea pig products , houses , and suitable bedding .

Dimensions

  • Dimensions: approximately 23 × 26 x 15 cm
  • Opening: approximately 10 x 10 cm
  • Material: plastic
  • Bottom: open bottom

If in doubt, always measure to see if the opening fits your animal properly. This opening is usually suitable for rats. For larger guinea pigs, 10 x 10 cm can be tight; in that case, it is better to choose a more spacious house.

What is the advantage of an open bottom?

An open bottom ensures that the house sits directly on the bedding. This allows your pet to create a comfortable resting spot on its own, and makes it easy for you to check the area underneath. You lift the house, remove soiled bedding, and then put it back.

An open bottom also aids in ventilation. This is pleasant for houses where animals lie for extended periods. However, do check regularly that the area under the house remains clean and dry.

Cleaning and maintenance

Plastic is easy to clean. Wipe the house with a damp cloth or use a suitable cleaning agent for animal enclosures. Rinse or wipe away any residue thoroughly and let the house dry completely before putting it back.

Additionally, check regularly for gnaw marks, cracks, or sharp edges. If the plastic becomes damaged or your animal starts actively gnawing on it, remove the house from the enclosure.

Compound

Composition: plastic.

Plastic is practical for houses that need to be cleaned frequently. However, it is not gnawing material. For animals that like to gnaw, it is better to offer additional, suitable gnawing material .

Good to know

Offer the Trixie Plastic Igloo House 23 cm under supervision and check regularly for wear and tear. Pay particular attention to gnaw marks, cracks, or sharp edges. Do not place the house in direct sunlight or in a place where it gets too hot, as plastic can retain heat. Use a house appropriate to the size of your animal and always provide multiple hiding places for group animals.
