Product description

Trixie Mega Hay Roll Rack 19 cm for Guinea Pigs, Rabbits, Chinchillas and Degus

The Trixie Mega Hay Roll Rack 19 cm is a round wooden hay rack for hay, grass, and herbs. Thanks to its round shape, you can use the rack standing up as a fixed hay rack, but also position it lying down as a playful foraging rack. This makes this hay roll especially fun as a supplementary rack for animals that enjoy pulling, sniffing, and nibbling on hay.

The hay rack has a closable roof at the top, making it easy to fill and preventing animals from climbing to the top. The bar spacing is approximately 2.5 cm. This makes the hay roll particularly interesting for guinea pigs, rabbits, chinchillas, and degus, for whom hay plays an important daily role.

Pros of the Trixie Mega Hay Roll Rack

Additional hay rack: nice alongside a permanent base hay rack or hay station.
Can be used standing or lying down: this allows you to alternate between quiet eating and more playful foraging.
With lockable roof: convenient when filling and helps prevent animals from climbing into the hay rack from above.
For hay, grass, and herbs: ideal for making the haymaking routine just a little more interesting.
Wooden look: fits beautifully in a natural interior for guinea pigs, rabbits, chinchillas, and degus.

Why choose a hay bale?

Hay is an important part of the daily routine for guinea pigs, rabbits, chinchillas, and degus. A hay roll makes offering hay just a little more active. Animals have to pull the hay from between the bars, making eating look more like searching, pulling, and being busy.

The round shape sets this hay rack apart from a standard hay rack. Standing use is convenient when you want to create a clearly defined hay spot. Lying use offers an extra challenge, as the roll can move slightly when animals pull on it. This makes the hay roll particularly fun as an enrichment addition alongside a fixed hay supply.

At DRD, we like to consider the role of a product in the enclosure. This hay roll is not a substitute for unlimited access to hay, but rather an additional place to choose. This way, you help provide your animal with more variety without losing sight of the basics.

Additional hay rack: what does that mean?

This Mega Hay Roll Rack is primarily intended as a supplementary rack. This means that it is great for enrichment, variety, and foraging behavior, but that sufficient hay must always be available in addition via a fixed base hay rack, hay station, or other spacious hay supply.

For animals that eat a lot of hay, such as guinea pigs and rabbits, this is especially important. They must have access to hay throughout the day. Therefore, use the hay roll, for example, for a portion of herbal hay, a playful haytime, or as a second hay station in the enclosure.

For which animals is the Mega Hay Roll Rack suitable?

  • Guinea pig: suitable as an additional hay rack or playful hay spot. Additionally, always ensure there is sufficient hay in an easily accessible place.
  • Rabbit: suitable as a supplementary hay rack for hay, grass, or herbs. For larger rabbits, an extra-spacious basic hay rack is also advisable.
  • Chinchilla: suitable for hay and herbs. Regularly check that the hay rack remains sturdy and that the wood stays clean.
  • Degu: suitable as a hay and herb rack. Degus can actively work wood, so regular monitoring is important.
  • Hamster, dwarf hamster, mouse, and gerbil: not the most logical choice as a hay rack, because hay does not play the same basic role for these animals as it does for true hay-eating animals. Moreover, as a landscaping element, the size can be large.

How do you use the Trixie Mega Hay Roll Rack?

  • Open the small roof at the top.
  • Fill the hay rack loosely with hay, grass, or herbs.
  • Do not press the hay down too hard, so that the animals can easily pull it out from between the bars.
  • Use the hay rack standing as a quiet hay spot or lying down as a playful foraging roll.
  • Check daily if there is still clean hay inside.
  • Remove wet, dusty, or soiled hay in time.

You can fill the hay roll with regular hay, herbal hay, or a combination of hay and dried herbs. Think, for example, of hay , herbal hay , or dried herbs . This way, you make eating hay a more active experience.

Use vertically or horizontally

Standing use is convenient when you want to place the hay roll in a fixed spot in the enclosure. This allows animals to eat around the rack, and the hay area remains easily visible. This works especially well for guinea pigs, chinchillas, and degus.

Lying down provides more of a challenge. The roller can move slightly when animals pull on it, requiring them to search and work harder for their hay. This is fun as enrichment, but use it under supervision and observe carefully whether your animal handles it comfortably. For group animals, it is wise to offer multiple hay points to prevent crowding.

Why the little roof is handy

The lockable lid makes refilling easy. You open the hay rack from the top, fill it with hay, and then close it again. The lid also helps prevent animals from climbing into the rack from the top. This is important, because a hay rack is meant for eating from, not for sitting in.

Always check that the lid closes properly and that no loose or sharp parts are forming. Wood is a natural material and must be checked regularly, especially for animals that like to gnaw.

Bar spacing and safe use

The Mega Hay Roll Rack has a bar spacing of approximately 2.5 cm. A good hay rack allows animals to reach the hay with their snouts, but must prevent animals from getting their heads stuck. Therefore, always pay attention to the size and build of your animal.

If you see your animal trying to stick its head through the bars or notice that the hay rack does not fit your animal properly, remove the rack from the enclosure and choose a different hay supply. Extra monitoring is advisable for young animals or animals with an abnormal build.

Use for guinea pigs and rabbits

For guinea pigs and rabbits, hay is a daily staple. This hay roll is therefore great as an extra hay station, but not as the sole source of hay. In addition, always use a spacious basic hay rack, hay sack, or separate hay area that your animal can access easily and without restriction.

When keeping multiple guinea pigs or rabbits, it is advisable to offer several hay stations. This allows the animals to eat at the same time without pushing each other away. The Mega Hay Roll can then serve as an additional enrichment area, for example with herbal hay or a small mix of hay and dried herbs.

Use for chinchillas and degus

Chinchillas and degus also enjoy eating hay and herbs. A hay roll can work well as a supplementary hay rack for these animals, especially when you want to offer variety alongside the regular hay spot. Because chinchillas and degus can actively gnaw, regular monitoring is important.

Check the wood, bars, and roof for gnawing damage, loose parts, or rough edges. If the hay rack becomes unstable or damaged, remove it from the enclosure.

Cleaning and maintenance

Remove old or soiled hay daily. Clean the hay rack as dry as possible with a small brush or cloth. Preferably do not use large amounts of water, as wood can absorb moisture and warp.

If the hay rack has become wet from urine or water, remove it from the enclosure and let it dry completely. Then check if the wood is still sturdy and in good condition. In case of heavy soiling or damage, replacement is often the best option.

Fijne hooi ruif!
