Product description

Soft Cotton Nesting Material for Small Rodents

Building a nest starts with material your pet can collect and carry itself. This soft, untreated cotton is an addition for nest building by mice, dwarf hamsters, hamsters and gerbils. Place small, loose tufts in the enclosure and let your pet decide where the cotton belongs.

The nesting material consists of 100% pure cotton, without synthetic fibres. The soft tufts can be used to line a sleeping area. There is no need to prepare the whole nest yourself: collecting, moving and arranging the material gives your pet something to do.

Collecting material and building a nest

For rodents that build nests, nesting material has a different purpose from the bedding beneath their paws. Bedding forms the base of the enclosure. Nesting material is collected and arranged where the animal wants to rest. Offer this cotton specifically for the sleeping area, alongside the usual bedding.

Place a small tuft somewhere dry and easy to reach. Your pet can collect it and carry it to its house or another chosen nesting spot. This leaves the arrangement of the nest to your pet as much as possible. You do not need to pack the cotton into a house or spread it throughout the enclosure.

The soft material can be used to line a sheltered, warm sleeping area. In winter, your pet can use it to add to its nest. Continue to provide a dry nesting spot and good ventilation. Nesting material complements a suitably furnished enclosure; the temperature of the surrounding environment remains important.

Which animals is it for?

This use is aimed at small rodents that collect their own nesting material:

  • Mouse: offer small tufts that the mice can carry to their chosen sleeping area.
  • Dwarf hamster: place a little material near the nesting spot so your dwarf hamster can collect it.
  • Hamster: provide loose tufts that your hamster can use to line its sleeping nest as it prefers.
  • Gerbil: offer the cotton as a small addition alongside other nesting material.

The manufacturer identifies hamsters and mice as the intended animals. Only use the product for animals aged four weeks or older and follow the instructions on the packaging.

How to use the cotton nesting material

  • Take a small amount from the packaging and divide it into loose tufts.
  • Place the tufts somewhere clean, dry and easy for your pet to reach.
  • Let your pet collect and arrange the material itself.
  • During daily care, check that the nesting material is still dry and clean.
  • Remove damp or soiled material and offer a small amount of fresh material when needed.

There is no fixed portion that suits every animal. Start with a little and see how much your pet carries away. If some remains unused, there is no need to keep adding more. This helps you keep track of what you offer and what your pet actually uses.

Combining it with hemp nesting material

You can offer the cotton alongside Hemp Nesting Material. Place a small amount of each somewhere accessible. Your pet can then collect both materials and arrange them in its nest.

There is no need to mix the materials tightly or shape them into a complete nest beforehand. Offering them loosely keeps collecting as part of nest building. It is a simple way to add material to the sleeping area without changing the whole enclosure.

Material and useful information

Material: 100% cotton.
Contents: 20 g.
Minimum age according to the manufacturer: 4 weeks.

Softness is not the only consideration with fibrous nesting material. Do not use material that forms long, difficult-to-break threads in which an animal could become tangled. The descriptions ‘natural’ or ‘untreated’ alone do not guarantee safe use.
