Chinchilla hammocks – comfort, height and a nice resting place at DRD Rodent Shop®
Chinchillas love a comfortable place to relax. A chinchilla hammock offers just that: a soft, floating resting spot at a height where your pet can safely retreat or simply laze around. In this category, you'll find various styles, such as fabric and plush hammocks, double-tiered hammocks, as well as hanging tunnels and natural suspension bridges made of grass or willow, for example. As specialists in rodents and rabbits since 2011, we select models that are user-friendly: easy to attach, fit into chinchilla cages, and ideal as an additional focal point in your home.

Why a hammock in a chinchilla cage?
A hammock is a smart addition if you want to create more resting areas and height without cluttering the floor. Many chinchillas use a hammock as a permanent "chill spot": a place to rest after running, or simply relax in a quiet moment. Moreover, a hammock helps to divide the cage into layers, which often creates a sense of calm and order in the layout.
Which type of chinchilla hammock is right for you?
Looking for something soft and cozy ? Then plush and fabric hammocks are popular. Want more structure in your cage and a clear path? Then a suspension bridge (or a grass hammock) is a great choice. And for chinchillas who prefer more shelter, hanging tunnels and tube hammocks are ideal. Tip: combine your hammock with a stable resting point, such as a platform hammock , so you have both a fixed top and a soft place to hang.
Choice guide: how to make the right choice
Choose your hammock based on (1) size (is it spacious enough?), (2) type of rest (open hammock or more sheltered like a tube/tunnel), and (3) placement (corner, middle, or top). Want to start without any hassle? Start with one basic hammock in a quiet spot and see how your chinchilla handles it.
How do you use this?
✔ Hang the hammock in a quiet place, preferably not directly above food/water or toilet area.
✔ Make sure the hammock hangs stably and not too high above an “empty” fall space.
✔ Let your chinchilla get used to it and observe how it interacts with the material (some animals chew more than others).
✔ Clean according to the material: wash or replace fabric/plush regularly; keep natural varieties dry and clean.
✔ Check the suspension points and the canvas for wear and tear every week.
Checklist
✔ Is the size right? Your chinchilla should have plenty of room to lie down and relax.
✔ Is it hanging stably and not too close to bars where they could get stuck?
✔ Choose a type that suits your pet: open hammock, 2-tiered hammock, or a sheltered tube/tunnel.
✔ Please note maintenance: washable or quicker to replace with intensive use.
✔ Combine with other rest points (plateau/bridge) for a logical route.
Safety
✔ Check hammocks regularly for loose seams, fraying or wear and replace them in time.
✔ Place hammocks so that there is no excessive drop; use intermediate platforms or an underpass.
✔ Make sure that the suspension points are properly secured and cannot come loose during jumping or playing.
✔ Do you see your chinchilla chewing on the material a lot? Then choose a different type or only place it under supervision.
FAQ
Do chinchillas really use a hammock?
Many chinchillas actually enjoy a soft, elevated resting spot. Some will lie down right away, while others use it as a stopover on their journey.
What is more convenient: a hammock, 2 tiers or a tube?
A basic hammock is an easy start. Two tiers offer extra options and space. A tube/tunnel is ideal for animals that prefer a more sheltered spot.
How often should I clean a hammock?
That depends on usage. Check weekly and clean or replace it when it becomes less fresh or when you see significant wear.
