Gerbil drinking bottles & water bowls – fresh water, cleverly placed and suitable for a digging enclosure
Gerbils are curious diggers and real rodents . This can make "just putting down a water bottle" surprisingly difficult: bedding ends up everywhere, a bowl can be undermined, and some gerbils like to test whether plastic is actually sturdy. That's why in this category you'll find only solutions suitable for gerbils: chew-resistant drinking bottles , sturdy water bowls , and handy holders to keep the water clean, stable, and accessible.
At DRD Rodent Shop® , we select for practical safety in active habitats. Specialists in rodents and rabbits since 2011 .
Gerbils like to gnaw. A glass water bottle is therefore usually the safest base in the enclosure.

Place containers in a stable place, for example on a plateau , so that digging is less likely.

Provide sufficient gnawing material and enrichment: this will keep their attention focused on what is actually intended.

Selection guide – what suits your gerbil habitat?
Gerbils prefer a habitat with plenty of digging depth. Therefore, choose a stable enclosure that doesn't come into direct contact with scattered bedding.
1) Deep substrate (terrarium/hamsterscaping)
- Glass drinking bottle with a sturdy holder/stand (stable and gnaw-proof).
- Optionally, a heavy ceramic or glass container can be used, but it should be placed cleverly (see tips below).
2) Lattice cage (grid part)
- Attaching the drinking bottle to the outside is often ideal: gerbils can't get to it to gnaw.
- The same applies here: always test whether the bottle flows properly and does not drip.
✔ Tip: Combine drinking solutions with play and foraging for an active, busy habitat where gerbils can burn off some energy.
Drinking bottle or water bowl: what do you choose?
In practice, a water bottle is the most hygienic option for most gerbils: the water stays cleaner and prevents bedding from blowing into the water or being dug into. A water bowl is also an option, provided it's sturdy, positioned appropriately, and you check it regularly for dirt.
- Drinking bottles: hygienic, less chance of contamination, ideal for deep litter.
- Water bowls: useful as an extra option or for gerbils that handle them calmly; preferably choose heavy ceramic or glass .
- Water bottle holders: perfect if you don't have bars (e.g. terrarium) or if you want extra stability.
Place & hang – this is how it stays stable
- Hang the drinking spout at a height where your gerbil can drink comfortably (without stretching, but not "halfway in between").
- Use a holder or mount that cannot shift.
- Always place a water bowl on a solid surface , such as a tray , so that it is not undermined.
- Do not place water right next to the sand bath: sand in the water = rapid contamination.
Maintenance & hygiene
Refresh the water daily , preferably. Also check that the spout is draining properly (especially after cleaning). Clean drinking bottles thoroughly weekly with warm water, preferably using a brush on the inside. Bowls can be easily washed with warm water; avoid harsh cleaning agents.
Checklist – gerbil drinking properly arranged
✔ Preferably choose a glass drinking bottle (gnaw-proof).
✔ Use a holder or sturdy mounting (especially in terrariums).
✔ Place containers on a tray or solid surface.
✔ Refresh the water daily and check for flow/leakage.
✔ Provide sufficient gnawing material to limit “bottle gnawing”.
Safety
Check drinking solutions regularly for damage, shifting, and contamination. If using a water dish for young or small animals, choose a shallow, sturdy model and place it in a stable location. If you notice any noticeable changes in drinking or behavior, consult a veterinarian.
FAQ – Gerbil drinking bottles & water bowls
What's best for gerbils: a water bottle or a water bowl?
In most gerbil enclosures, a water bottle is the most practical and hygienic option. A water bowl can be an option, provided it is heavy and stable.
Why prefer glass?
Gerbils love to gnaw. Glass is gnaw-resistant and generally lasts the longest. In wire cages, a plastic bottle can sometimes work fine, as long as the gerbils can't reach it.
How many drink points do I need?
For a group it is often nice to have more than one drinking point (e.g. a bottle + an extra option), especially in larger accommodations.
My gerbil knocks over every bowl, what now?
Choose a heavy ceramic or glass container, place it on a tray , or use a water bottle with a holder/sturdy attachment.
✔ Rodent-resistant choices for active gerbils
✔ Smart to place in enclosures with deep ground cover
