Product description

Wooden Hamster Sandpit with Plexiglas 26 cm

The 26 cm Wooden Hamster Sand Bath is a covered sand bath for dwarf hamsters and hamsters. The wooden frame keeps the sand area more visible within the enclosure, while the plexiglass front allows you to watch clearly as your animal rolls, digs, or moves quietly through the sand.

A sand bath is a great grooming and enrichment area for hamsters. Many hamsters use sand to keep their fur clean, but also to dig, sniff, or as a designated toilet. Thanks to its compact size, this sand bath fits well into a hamsterscape or an enclosure where you want to create a distinct sand zone without immediately installing a large, open sand bath.

Why choose a covered hamster sandbox?

A covered sand bath gives your hamster a designated place to roll, dig, and groom itself. The sand is more contained than in an open dish, and the plexiglass front allows you to clearly see how your pet uses the sand bath. This makes this bath house not only practical but also very fun to watch in the enclosure.

At DRD, when it comes to sand baths, we focus primarily on size, entrance, maintenance, and product role. This sand bath is particularly suitable for dwarf hamsters and hamsters. It can be used as a sand spot for gerbils, but gerbils are true gnawers; therefore, inspect the wood very carefully for gnawing damage.

For dwarf hamsters and hamsters

Dwarf hamsters and hamsters enjoy using a sand spot. Some animals actively roll in it, while others use the sand box primarily as a toilet or sniffing area. The openings on both sides allow your hamster to easily walk in and out.

Use a layer of suitable bath sand or chinchilla sand. Do not fill the sand bath unnecessarily high; the openings are low down, so a practical layer is often more pleasant than an overfilled box. Check the sand regularly and replace it when it is wet, musty, or dirty.

Nice for hamsterscaping

This sand bath fits well into hamsterscaping. You can place it among bedding, cork, moss, tunnels, and natural materials, so that the sand area becomes part of the decor. The flat top can also be used as an extra surface, for example, as a small decorative element or as part of a low route.

Place the sandbox stably and low. With deep bedding, you can build up the bedding around the sandbox so that it fits more naturally into the enclosure and cannot tip over.

For which animals is the Wooden Sandbox suitable?

  • Mouse: possibly suitable as a small sand or sniffing spot in a spacious enclosure. Sand is not a primary part of care for mice, but a small, delimited zone can be interesting.
  • Dwarf hamster: very suitable as a compact sand bath or sand tray. Due to its size, it fits well in a dwarf hamster enclosure.
  • Hamster: suitable as a sand bath, sand bath, or toilet area. For larger Syrian hamsters, check if your animal can comfortably pass through the openings.
  • Gerbil: limited suitability as a sand bath. Gerbils enjoy using sand, but also gnaw extensively on wood. Therefore, check carefully for gnawing damage and replace the sand bath if it becomes damaged.
  • Dwarf rat: not suitable as a sand bath. Dwarf rats do not need a sand bath, and fine sand can be irritating to the respiratory tract.
  • Rat: not suitable as a sand bath. For rats, it is better to choose low-dust bedding, digging material, sniffing boxes without fine sand, and Ratscaping .
  • Guinea pig: not suitable. Guinea pigs do not need a sand bath for grooming, and this sandbox is too small for guinea pigs.
  • Rabbit: not suitable. Rabbits do not need a sand bath and this sandbox is too small for rabbits.
  • Chinchilla: not suitable. Chinchillas need a spacious sand bath to roll properly; this model is too small.
  • Degu: not suitable as a full-fledged sandbox. Degus need more space to roll properly and are also strong gnawers.

How do you use the sandbox?

Fill the sand bath with a layer of suitable bath sand or chinchilla sand. By sufficient, we mean a layer in which your hamster can comfortably roll and dig, without the sand immediately running out through the openings. Do not use shell sand, as this is too sharp for skin and fur.

Usage Practical tip
Sand bath Use suitable hamster sand or chinchilla sand and replace soiled sand in time.
Toilet area Many hamsters choose their sand bath as a toilet. In that case, sift or replace the sand regularly.
Hamsterscaping Work up the ground cover around the sandbox so that it blends naturally with the layout.
Gerbil use Only use when you carefully check for gnawing damage and the sandbox remains stable.

Which sand do you use?

Use suitable bath sand or chinchilla sand. This is intended for animals that groom their fur in sand. Do not use shell sand, or sharp or coarse sand. Regular play sand is not the same as bath sand and is less suitable for fur care.

Do not use this sand bath for rats, pygmy rats, guinea pigs, or rabbits. These animals do not need a sand bath for grooming. Furthermore, fine sand can be harmful to the respiratory system of rats and pygmy rats.

Cleaning and maintenance

Remove soiled sand regularly. If your animal uses the sandbox as a toilet, cleaning is necessary more often. Wipe the wooden parts dry or slightly damp and allow the sandbox to dry thoroughly before adding new sand.

The plexiglass front is removable. This makes cleaning and changing the sand easier. When replacing it, check that the plexiglass is properly seated and that there are no sharp edges, loose parts, or damage.

Material and specifications

Material: wood plywood with plexiglass front.

Dimensions: approx. 26 × 15 × 16 cm.

Openings: approx. Ø 7.5 cm.

Use: sandbox, sand bath, toilet area, and small scavenger hunt.

Particulars: present under supervision and check regularly for wear.

Good to know

This is a compact wooden sand bath. That is practical for dwarf hamsters and many hamsters, but it is too small for larger sand-bathing animals such as chinchillas and degus. It can be fun for gerbils, but the type of wood requires extra supervision because gerbils gnaw intensively.

Regularly inspect the sandbox for gnawing damage, moisture, loose parts, and wear. Remove it when it becomes damaged or can no longer be kept clean properly.
