Degu nesting material – paper, hemp and soft nesting material for a comfortable nesting place

Degu nesting material – nesting in the ground cover, comfortable resting and extra security

Degus like to build nests in the bedding. They drag materials to their favorite spot, push them together, and create a sheltered resting place for the group. Good nesting material isn't a "luxury," but a practical addition to a deep, suitable bedding. Ideally, choose nesting material that is easy to gather, soft to the touch, and easy to maintain. As specialists in rodents and rabbits since 2011, we select nesting materials and sleeping areas that suit natural degu behavior and that can easily be combined with a well-equipped enclosure. Always combine nesting material with a good foundation, such as degu bedding , and sufficient gnawing and activity aids, such as degu gnawing material and degu play & foraging .

Why nesting material for degus?

Degus are social animals that prefer a permanent, sheltered resting spot. With suitable nesting material, they can expand their nesting area, personalize their surroundings, and retreat. It works best to supplement this with a deep digging layer and sufficient landscaping, such as houses and tunnels . Complete the care with degus hay (always available) and a permanent spot for rolling/grooming with sand and sandboxes .

What should you look for in degu nesting material?

Ideally, choose nesting material that is soft , easy to handle , and not sticky or strongly scented. Also, pay attention to your degus' behavior: some groups "demolish" everything, while others are more calm builders. For true rodents, it's wise to always combine comfort with plenty of gnawing material , so they can satisfy their gnawing needs on the right items.

Types of nesting material: which one suits your interior?

Paper (flakes) are ideal for quickly refilling and maintaining a fresh nesting area. Natural fibers provide more structure and a "building feel." Soft nesting filling and cozy sleeping spots are perfect for extra comfort, but require a bit more control and maintenance. Want to be truly smart? Create a distinct resting zone (nesting area) and an active zone for climbing and exploring through play and foraging .

Checklist

First create a good base with ground cover (deep digging layer).
Choose nesting material that degus can easily collect and move.
Combine comfort with sufficient gnawing material and challenge.
Want to relax in extra comfort? Add a hanging space: Degoe hammocks .
Check the nesting area and materials regularly and replace if dirty.

Maintenance

Remove visibly soiled pieces from the nesting box daily and refill where necessary.
Replace nesting material sooner if it becomes damp or has a strong odor.
Plush sleeping bags/hammocks: Follow the washing instructions on the label and preferably use a spare set.

FAQ

Is nesting material the same as bedding?
No. Bedding is the base layer for digging and nesting. Nesting material is additional "building material" for the resting area. So always combine it with suitable bedding .

My degus like to sleep high up. Is nesting material suitable?
Absolutely. Many degus build a nesting area downstairs and also use a hanging spot. Check out degu hammocks for extra soft resting.

What should I pay attention to for safe use?
Check materials regularly for loose threads/fibers and remove any damaged parts. Avoid strongly scented materials and replace nesting materials when soiled.
