The house is made of blank, untreated wood, has two entrances, an open bottom, and a flat roof that can also be used as a resting or lookout spot. Due to its understated shape, it fits beautifully into a natural interior, but also into a practical enclosure where you are primarily looking for a sturdy hiding place.

This log house is available in multiple sizes. Choose the variant that suits your animal's body size, the doorway, and the space in the enclosure. The green animal logos on the product images help you see for each size which variant is intended for.

Why choose a wooden log house?

A good house gives your animal its own space in the enclosure. Rodents use hiding places to rest, sleep, retreat, or create a route through the enclosure. A house with two entrances often feels more comfortable than a completely closed house with only one opening, because your animal always has a second exit.

The Trixie Wooden Log House Blank has a simple, sturdy shape. This makes it easy to place and combine with tunnels, bedding, platforms, branches, and other natural materials. The flat roof makes the house extra functional: animals can sit on top, lie down, or take a look at their surroundings.

The open bottom is practical for use in an enclosure with bedding. You place the house directly on the surface or lightly work it into the bedding. This way, the house becomes part of the setup instead of a separate object sitting on top of everything.

Which size do you choose?

With this house, size is more important than just the species name. Always look at your animal's body size, the opening of the house, and the green animal logos on the product image. Your animal must be able to enter and exit comfortably, without having to squeeze through the opening.

  • 15 × 15 × 12 cm: compact size with an opening of approximately 5.5 × 6 cm. Suitable for small animals that fit through a smaller opening.
  • 28 × 18 × 16 cm: medium size with an opening of approximately 10 × 11 cm. Suitable for animals that require more interior space and a wider passage.
  • 40 × 23 × 20 cm: largest size with an opening of approximately 14 × 12.5 cm. Suitable for larger animals that need more space to sit, shelter, and move comfortably.

Are you unsure between two sizes? Then it is better to choose the more spacious variant. A dog house should not only “just fit,” but also be pleasantly usable as a resting place. Especially for animals with a broader build, a full coat, or a calm way of moving, extra space is often preferable.

For which animals is the Trixie Blank Wooden Blockhouse suitable?

  • Mouse: suitable in the smallest size as a compact shelter. Mice like to use houses as a resting place, nesting place, or part of a route through the enclosure.
  • Dwarf hamster: suitable in an appropriately small size. Ensure that your dwarf hamster fits through the opening comfortably and place the house low and stable.
  • Hamster: choose the size based on body size. For Syrian hamsters, a larger size makes more sense than the smallest variant. Always check the opening and interior space.
  • Gerbil: suitable as a wooden hiding place and lookout post. Gerbils are active gnawers, so check the house regularly for wear and sharp edges.
  • Rat: only suitable when the chosen size is spacious enough. Use the house low and stable as a hiding or resting place in a spacious enclosure or play area.
  • Guinea pig: only suitable in the largest size. The house must be spacious enough so that your guinea pig can easily walk in and out and sit comfortably.
  • Chinchilla: suitable in an appropriately larger size as a dry hiding place. The nail-free finish is nice, but do check regularly for gnaw marks.
  • Degu: suitable in an appropriately larger size. Degus gnaw actively, so inspect the wood carefully and replace the house if sharp or loose parts appear.

Always take a close look at the green animal logos on the image of the chosen variant. These logos provide extra guidance for each size, so you don't have to choose based solely on the product name.

Two entrances for more safety and choice

A house with two entrances gives animals a better overview. Your animal can enter through one side and exit through the other. This is especially pleasant for animals that like to have an escape route or live with other animals of their species.

For group animals, a second exit can help prevent tension, as an animal is not trapped when another animal stands in front of the opening. The little house also makes the house more enjoyable for curious animals, as it serves not only as a sleeping place but also as a passageway within the enclosure.

Flat roof as an extra space in the interior design

The flat roof can be used as an extra seating, lying, or lookout spot. However, always place the playhouse low and stable. The roof is part of the playhouse, but it must not become a high climbing platform or a dangerous falling point.

For hamsters, dwarf hamsters, and gerbils, low placement is particularly important. Place the house on a sturdy spot, possibly embedded slightly in the bedding, so that it cannot slide, tip over, or sink.

Material & finish

The Trixie Wooden Log House Blank is made of high-quality spruce wood. The wood has a calm, light appearance and therefore blends well with natural decor, wooden tunnels, bedding, and aquascaping materials.

An important advantage is that the house is finished without nails or staples. This makes it a pleasant choice for animals that sniff, explore, or nibble on wooden furnishings.

Wood is a natural product. Small differences in color, grain, structure, and finish may occur. This is inherent to the material and gives each cottage a unique character.

The animal welfare label

This product bears the Tierschutz-Kennzeichen. This is an animal welfare label for products that have been assessed in accordance with the Austrian Animal Welfare Act. The assessment considers, among other things, legal regulations, current insights, practical experience, and the use of the product by the relevant animal species.

For you as a pet owner, this provides extra guidance when choosing a product intended for animal-friendly use. It remains important to choose the right size yourself and to regularly check the house for wear and tear.

Usage & placement

Place the house low and stable in the enclosure. Set it on a flat surface or press it lightly into the bedding so that it cannot slide or tip over. Use the roof only as it naturally forms part of the layout: as a low resting or lookout spot.

You can beautifully combine the little house with bedding, tunnels, cork, branches, moss, hay, and other natural materials. For small rodents, it fits well into hamsterscaping, gerbilscaping, or a natural mouse setup. For rats, it can be part of a low play or ratscaping zone, provided the chosen size is large enough.

Regularly check that the house is still standing firmly. This is especially important for animals that dig, push, or gnaw on wooden furnishings.

Cleaning and maintenance

Preferably clean the wooden house dry. Shake out loose bedding, nesting material, and leftover food, and use a dry brush or cloth if necessary. Because wood can absorb moisture, it is best not to keep the house wet for extended periods.

Use a slightly damp cloth only when necessary and allow the wood to dry completely before replacing it. Check immediately for gnaw marks, sharp edges, loose parts, or wear.

Good to know

Offer the Trixie Wooden Log House Blank only under supervision and check regularly for wear and tear. Always choose a size in which your animal can move around comfortably. Remove the house if sharp edges, loose parts, or strong gnaw marks appear. This house is not suitable for rabbits; preferably choose a more spacious rabbit house for rabbits.
