Product description

Terrarium Gerbilarium Marrakesch 100 White – stylish glass/wood base for hamsterscaping and gerbilscaping

The Terrarium Gerbilarium Marrakesch 100 White is a stylish glass and wood enclosure for small rodents. The tall glass walls allow for the use of a beautiful layer of substrate while maintaining a clear view of your animal and the interior. This makes this terrarium a great base for owners who want to create a calm, natural, and well-organized scape.

At DRD, when designing an enclosure, we look not only at the external dimensions but, above all, at what your animal can do with it. The Marrakesch 100 White offers space for bedding, sand, houses, tunnels, cork, moss, natural materials, and a well-thought-out layout. This ensures the enclosure is not only beautiful to look at but also practical for digging, hiding, foraging, and creating routes.

Why choose the Marrakesch 100 White?

The Marrakesch 100 White is particularly interesting for owners looking for an enclosure where appearance and functionality come together. In a glass terrarium, substrate stays in place better than in many wire cages. This makes it easier to work with a deeper layer, natural height variations, cork, tunnels, houses, and foraging areas.

The white wooden sides give the terrarium a calm appearance, while the glass sections provide a clear view. This makes this enclosure beautiful for your home and pleasant if you like to see how your animal creates routes, digs, forages, and uses its enclosure.

This provides a strong foundation for dwarf hamsters, mice, and small animal-friendly enclosures. For Syrian hamsters and gerbils, we pay extra attention to the final layout, body size, bedding thickness, and room for movement. This way, you choose not only a beautiful enclosure, but one that truly suits the animal that will live in it.

Why is this terrarium suitable for aquascaping?

With hamsterscaping and gerbilscaping, it is not just about how the enclosure looks, but primarily about how the animal can use it. The Marrakesch 100 White gives you room to work with bedding, sand, hiding places, tunnels, cork, wood, moss, and natural structures.

The tall glass walls are important in this regard. They make it easier to build up bedding and keep loose materials neatly within the enclosure. This allows you to create a calmer overall appearance with clear zones: a digging zone, sand zone, feeding or foraging area, hiding place, and movement route.

For a dwarf hamster, consider a deep digging layer, a sand bath, multiple hiding places, a suitable exercise wheel, and natural tunnels. For gerbils, the emphasis is even stronger on digging opportunities, sturdy materials, and a chew-resistant setup.

Size advice per animal

The Marrakesch 100 White has a base of approx. 96 × 47 cm. That is a nice size for a naturally decorated enclosure, but the right choice always depends on the animal species, body size, and interior design.

  • Mouse: suitable as a spacious and well-organized terrarium, provided you ensure plenty of structure, hiding places, climbing opportunities, substrate, and safe routes.
  • Dwarf hamster: very suitable as a hamsterscaping enclosure. The size offers space for deep bedding, a sand bath, a running wheel, houses, tunnels, and foraging areas.
  • Hamster: suitable for hamsters, but for a Syrian hamster, pay extra attention to body size, layout, and movement space. The floor dimensions are close to the 100 × 50 cm guideline, but just slightly below. Therefore, furnish the enclosure spaciously, logically, and not too crowded.
  • Gerbil: suitable as a gerbilarium when using a sturdy digging layer, chew-resistant materials, and sufficient structure. Gerbils are social diggers, so the setup must really be geared towards digging, gnawing, and moving around together.

This enclosure is not the right choice for pygmy rats, rats, guinea pigs, rabbits, chinchillas, and degus. These animals require a different type of enclosure, different height/surface area, or different furnishings.

Construction & ventilation

The Marrakesch 100 White combines glass with wood. The glass sections provide a clear view and keep bedding well contained within the enclosure. The white wooden side panels create a calm, furniture-like appearance.

There is an aluminium ventilation grille at the rear, and additional ventilation is also present via the top section. This double ventilation is important for a terrarium, as an enclosed enclosure always requires good air circulation. Additionally, place the terrarium in a suitable location: not in direct sunlight, not in a draft, and not next to a heat source.

The large top lid with gas spring makes care and furnishing easier. You can add bedding, change the sand, move houses, or quietly access your pet from above without having to disturb the entire setup.

How much bedding do you need?

For this enclosure, you can calculate the amount of bedding using:

length × width × desired layer thickness in cm ÷ 1000 = number of liters of bedding

For the Marrakesch 100 White, we calculate with approx. 96 × 47 cm. The actual quantity may vary slightly due to setup, height differences, and how compactly you press down the bedding.

Layer thickness Required content Practical use
10 cm approx. 45 liters Base layer, especially suitable as an underlayer or for a flat interior.
15 cm approx. 68 liters Nice starting layer for dwarf hamsters with some extra digging opportunity.
20 cm approx. 90 liters Great for hamsterscaping with tunnels, houses, and natural zones.
25 cm approx. 113 liters Strong burrowing layer for dwarf hamsters and gerbils, depending on the setup.
30 cm approx. 135 liters Deep scaping layer for owners who want to create plenty of digging space.

For a natural setup, a combination of bedding, nesting material, hay, tunnels, and sturdy structures often works best. Also check out our bedding and nesting material .

What is handy to order along with your order?

A terrarium like this looks its best when you create a good basic setup right from the start. Don't just think about a beautiful scape, but especially about functional zones that your animal can actually use.

  • Ground cover: for a deep excavation layer and stable subsoil.
  • Nesting material: for a warm, sheltered nesting site.
  • Sand bath: especially important for dwarf hamsters and gerbils.
  • Running wheel: always choose an appropriate diameter for the animal species and body size.
  • Houses and tunnels: for shelter, routes, and storage spots.
  • Natural furnishings: such as cork, wood, moss, bridges, and landscaping materials.
  • Foraging material: herbs, flowers, leaves, and short searching moments.

Marrakesh or another terrarium?

The Marrakesch 100 White is a great choice if you are looking for a calm, light appearance and prefer working from above. The combination of white wood and glass looks neater and more furniture-like than many standard terrariums.

If you are primarily looking for an enclosure with sliding doors at the front, another type of terrarium might be more practical. However, if you are looking for a neat glass/wood setup with a top lid, plenty of visibility, and a calm appearance, the Marrakesch 100 White is a very good fit.

Usage & placement

Place the terrarium on a sturdy, flat surface. Do not place it in direct sunlight or in a location where it can heat up significantly. A glass enclosure can retain heat, so a quiet spot with a stable room temperature is important.

First, set up the enclosure into main zones: a deep digging zone, a sand area, multiple hiding places, a walking route, a drinking spot, and a foraging zone. Afterward, you can further decorate it with cork, moss, tunnels, bridges, and natural materials.

For gerbils, it is important to pay extra attention to sturdy materials and sufficient digging space. For hamsters, deep bedding, a suitable exercise wheel, a good hiding place, and a calm layout are important. For mice, you should also add more climbing and route elements, as long as everything remains stable and easily accessible.

Cleaning & maintenance

The top flap provides easy access to the enclosure for daily maintenance. Regularly remove soiled areas and keep the sand bath, drinking area, and feeding area well-maintained. With a deep bedding, you do not always need to replace everything at once; you can often clean specific zones.

Gently clean glass and wooden parts with suitable products and prevent wooden parts from remaining unnecessarily wet. Allow cleaned parts to dry thoroughly before replacing the furnishings.
