How big should a rat cage be?
For two rats, we recommend a minimum of 100 x 50 x 70 cm . The more rats, the more space you need. Allow for approximately 20% additional floor space for each additional rat. Remember: the more spacious the cage, the more active and healthy your rats will be!
Our tip: always choose a tall model with multiple levels . Rats love climbing, steps, hammocks, and tunnels.
Material and construction of the cage
A good cage for rats has:
- A deep base for ground cover
- A top with horizontal bars for climbing behaviour
- No smooth or closed walls that block air circulation
- No sharp edges or dangerous bars
Avoid cages with plastic walls. These trap odors and fumes, which rat respiratory systems are sensitive to.

Furnishings: from sleeping cabin to climbing rope
Rats are clever puzzlers who need plenty of challenge. So, equip your rat cage well with:
- Sleeping houses (at least 1 per rat + 1 extra!)
- Climbing ropes , pipes and ladders
- Platforms and hammocks
- Tunnels , a running wheel is great fun (good size) and food puzzles

Maintenance and hygiene of the rat cage
Rats can be litter-trained, so a litter box in the cage is ideal. Also, choose a dust-free substrate such as paper, hemp, or cardboard. Avoid sawdust, especially coniferous wood, as it can release harmful fumes.
Daily: empty toilet bowl , change water
Weekly: Clean the cage with a good cage cleaner
Regularly: rotate rat toys for enrichment and alternate hammocks / climbing ropes
Placement and surroundings of the Rat Cage
Place the rat cage in a draft-free location, out of direct sunlight, and not next to a heater or speakers. Rats hear ultrasound and are sensitive to temperature fluctuations. The right location is therefore quiet, warm, and has a stable climate.
