What is a good bar spacing for a hay rack?
A good quality hay rack should be designed in such a way that rodents can stick their snouts between the bars. Vertical bars work best for this, as most animal noses are not very wide but are long and high. However, it is very important that the animals cannot put their heads through the bars, otherwise they could become trapped. This is particularly the case with straight bars and happens less quickly with rounded bars. If you notice that your rodent's head fits through the bars and could possibly become trapped, it is advisable to remove the hay rack from the enclosure and choose one with a smaller bar spacing.
The suitable bar spacing depends on the animal species. In general, the following distances are recommended for different animal species:
Guinea pigs: about 3 cm
Degus: about 2.5 to 3 cm
Chinchillas: about 2.5 to 3 cm
Dwarf rabbits: about 3 to 3.5 cm
Medium rabbits: up to about 4 cm
Large rabbits: up to about 4.5 cm
Make sure you choose the correct bar spacing that is suitable for your rodent or rabbit. This ensures that they can eat safely and comfortably from the hay rack.
