Mouse hammocks – safe places to sleep and climb

Mouse hammocks – safe sleeping, climbing & resting together (high in the cage)

Mice (colored mice) are sociable, curious climbers who prefer a safe place to hang out together, sleep, hide, and clamber. In this category, you'll find a carefully selected assortment of mouse hammocks and hanging areas: from soft hammocks and hanging cubes to hanging tunnels and other suspended routes. Practical, comfortable, and above all: tailored to natural behavior (sleeping together, perching, exploring, and quickly "crawling away").

Sleeping together = peace in the group

Mice like to sleep together. Combine roosting spots with a good base and plenty of hiding places. Also consider mouse houses and nesting materials for added comfort.

Climbing & route creation

Hammocks are more than just "sleeping": they also provide a route and a resting place. Build cleverly in layers with platforms, ladders , and tunnels .

Washable & mouse-proof hygiene

Mice mark with small puddles: therefore, preferably choose washable hanging spots and a consistent cleaning routine. Combine this with grooming and (for odors) enzyme cleaners via urine spray .

Which hammock suits your mice?

Not every mouse uses a hangout in the same way. Some like to hide away in a "hut," while others prefer to lie open in a hammock. That's why we offer several types of hangouts, each with its own function:

  • Classic hammocks – great as a shared sleeping or chilling spot, easy to combine with other furnishings.
  • Hanging cube / hanging house – extra secure; ideal for mice that like to sleep "hidden."
  • Hanging tunnels and natural variations (e.g. woven material) – sleep and move through: perfect as a route in a climbing frame.
  • Suspension bridges / hanging routes – turn heights into play and walking areas, especially in combination with platforms.

Tip: work with multiple hangouts . One popular sleeping spot is nice, but offering more prevents crowding and gives the group more options.

Hang safely: high is fun, but fall-friendly is important

Mice like to sleep higher up in their cages. Hanging spots are ideal, provided you place them wisely:

  • It is best to hang a hammock stably at several points (preferably 4), so that it does not tip over.
  • Create a “soft zone” under the hanging spot: ground cover, an extra hammock lower down, or a platform as a halfway station.
  • Keep routes logical: from plateau to hangout to tunnel (instead of one big jump).
  • Also use hanging areas as a transition to other furnishings, such as cage accessories .

Want to add an extra challenge? Combine hangouts with play and foraging for an active, mouse-friendly climbing and searching environment.

Material & seasons: warm, airy and suitable for gnawing behaviour

Many hammocks have a soft side (fleece/plush) and sometimes a smoother, cooler side (e.g., nylon). This is convenient, because mice like to lie together and regulate their own comfort. Natural versions (such as woven/grass) offer a different experience and can be an additional enrichment.

  • Winter/comfort : soft, warm fabrics and hanging cubes for a secure night's sleep.
  • Summer/airy : thinner fabrics or a cooler silk, plus sufficient ventilation in the cage.
  • Gnawing & destruction : Young or very active mice can gnaw. Prevent boredom with gnawing materials and additional distractions.

Do you notice your mice pulling on the hammock to build a nest? Then offer plenty of nesting material so the place stays true.

Maintenance & hygiene: keep it fresh without hassle

  • Check weekly for wet spots and odors (mice mark frequently).
  • Washable hammocks : wash according to label (often 30–40°C) and allow to dry thoroughly before replacing.
  • Spot clean in between: wipe it down briefly, and for stubborn urine odors you can use enzyme cleaners via urine spray .
  • Keep the base clean with a suitable substrate of mouse bedding (makes a big difference in the odor perception).

Checklist: Ideal mouse hangout setup

When (re)decorating, please review this list:

At least 1 spacious shared hangout spot for the entire group
Extra hanging space or shelter (choice = less crowding)
Hanging at multiple points (stable and non-tilting)
Soft “fall zone” or intermediate stations (plateau/second hammock)
Washing or cleaning routine (mice mark frequently)
Plenty of distractions: climbing + foraging + gnawing

Safety warnings

  • Check hammocks regularly for fraying, loose threads, holes , and damaged fasteners.
  • Always hang it up in such a way that mice cannot fall far ; use intermediate stations (platforms or an extra hammock).
  • Replace hammocks in time if large holes appear or if mice keep pulling at the edges.
  • Be careful with open hooks or protruding parts: attach firmly and as "smoothly" as possible.

FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions about Mouse Hammocks

How many hammocks do I need for mice?
Start with one spacious shared hangout spot and add at least one additional spot as an alternative. In larger groups, it's helpful to have more options, so everyone can choose without jostling.

What size hammock is suitable?
Consider the group size and sleeping patterns: mice like to lie together. Choose something a little larger than too small, so the whole group can fit comfortably.

Do mice gnaw hammocks to pieces?
This can happen, especially with young or bored mice. Provide plenty of nesting and gnawing material and provide variety with play and foraging .

Can a hammock be washed in the washing machine?
Many fabric hammocks do: always follow the care label. Let it dry thoroughly before hanging it back up. For occasional freshening, you can spot-clean and (for odors) use enzyme cleaners.

Where is the best place to hang a hammock?
High is nice, but always place it safely : hang it securely and with a soft area underneath. Combine with platforms and ladders for a logical climbing course.
