Product description

Versele-Laga Mountain Meadow Hay Chamomile 500 g

Versele-Laga Mountain Meadow Hay Chamomile is a high-fiber mountain meadow hay with dried chamomile. The hay has a soft, floral scent and a natural appearance, making it a perfect fit for the daily care of guinea pigs, rabbits, chinchillas, and degus. For these herbivores, hay is an important part of their daily routine: they eat, search, pull at, and chew on it throughout the day.

For small rodents such as mice, dwarf hamsters, hamsters, and gerbils, we use this hay primarily as natural nesting material, foraging material, or landscaping material. In this way, the hay serves a useful function in a hamster, mouse, or gerbil enclosure as well, without being used as the main daily food.

Why choose mountain meadow hay with chamomile?

Mountain meadow hay naturally has a varied structure. The addition of dried chamomile gives this hay a floral scent and a soft, herbal appearance. This makes this variety pleasant for owners who like to offer their animal variety, but still want to stick to a calm and natural hay base.

Hay is important for rabbits, guinea pigs, chinchillas, and degus because these animals spend a lot of time chewing and foraging. By alternating different types of hay, the hay supply remains more attractive. This chamomile hay is therefore a nice choice alongside natural meadow hay, timothy hay, or another herbal hay variety.

For small omnivorous rodents, hay primarily serves a furnishing function. Mice, dwarf hamsters, hamsters, and gerbils can use small tufts of hay to nest, reinforce tunnels, sniff, or create natural layers in their enclosure. As a result, this hay helps not only as a material but also as soft enrichment in their daily behavior.

For which animals is this hay suitable?

  • Mouse: suitable as nesting material, foraging material, and natural enrichment. Mice like to use various materials to create routes, nesting sites, and hiding places.
  • Dwarf hamster: suitable as landscaping material, nest filler, or a light top layer. Use small tufts between the bedding, near a tunnel, or around a hiding place.
  • Hamster: suitable as natural nesting and landscaping material. For Syrian hamsters, use it primarily as a supplement in the enclosure, not as the main food source.
  • Gerbil: suitable as natural nesting, tunnel, and landscaping material. Gerbils can incorporate hay into their burrowing layer and use it to make their enclosure more active.
  • Guinea pig: suitable as a daily hay base. Guinea pigs should always have access to fresh hay, as hay forms a large part of their daily feeding routine.
  • Rabbit: suitable as a daily hay base. Rabbits eat a lot of hay spread throughout the day, thereby remaining actively engaged in chewing and foraging.
  • Chinchilla: suitable as a daily fiber-rich hay base. Offer the hay clean, dry, and readily available.
  • Degu: suitable as a daily hay base. Degus require a frugal, fiber-rich feeding routine, in which good hay plays an important role.

For rats and pygmy rats, we do not include hay as a practical target group. Rats have sensitive airways and do not need hay in their daily care. For rats, it is preferable to choose low-dust bedding, suitable digging box materials, tunnels, hammocks, foraging toys, and other enrichment that better suits their behavior.

Feeding & using

For guinea pigs, rabbits, chinchillas, and degus, a generous portion of fresh hay should be available daily. Refresh the hay regularly and remove soiled or flattened hay so that it remains appealing to eat. You can offer this hay in a hay rack, hay bag, hay corner, or feeding area, depending on the enclosure and your animal's preference.

For mice, dwarf hamsters, hamsters, and gerbils, use small tufts in the enclosure. For example, place it around a house, mix it into the bedding, or use it as a natural top layer in a foraging zone. For hamsterscaping and gerbilscaping, hay provides extra structure and creates a warm, natural look in the enclosure.

Composition & analysis

Composition: mountain meadow hay, dried chamomile.

Analysis: fiber > 30%.

This composition is suitable for a fiber-rich hay variety with a gentle herbal supplement. Because hay is a natural product, color, smell, length, and structure can vary from harvest to harvest. This natural variation is inherent to dried roughage and means that every hay batch can be slightly different.

DRD hay tip: stored in a dark and cool place

At DRD Knaagdierwinkel®, we store hay in a dark and cool place, away from direct sunlight. This ensures that the scent, color, and quality are preserved as well as possible until the hay goes to your pet. Proper storage is especially beneficial for herbal hay, as the scent and appearance are precisely part of what makes the hay attractive.

Good to know

Hay remains a natural product. One harvest may be greener, finer, coarser, softer, or stempier than another. Therefore, always observe what your animal enjoys eating and using. For herbivores, sufficient hay is important in their daily routine; for small rodents, you use it primarily as enrichment, nesting material, and a natural furnishing element.

Frequently asked questions about Versele-Laga Mountain Meadow Hay Chamomile

Yes, this hay is suitable for rabbits as a daily basic hay diet. You can also alternate it with other types of hay to keep the hay selection interesting.

Is this hay suitable for guinea pigs?

Yes, guinea pigs need plenty of hay daily. This chamomile variety can be a nice change alongside plain hay, timothy hay, or another type of herbal hay.

Can I use this hay for hamsterscaping?

Yes, this hay is suitable as landscaping material for dwarf hamsters and hamsters. Use small tufts between the bedding, near a tunnel, or around a hiding place.
