Product description

Trixie Running Disc for Mice, Dwarf Hamsters and Hamsters

The Trixie Running Disc is a plastic running disc for small rodents that love to run and move around. Instead of an upright running wheel, this disc features an open, angled running surface on which your animal can run around. This makes the disc a fun change of pace in the enclosure or an additional exercise option alongside a matching running wheel.

The exercise disc is available in ø 17 cm and ø 30 cm. The smaller size is particularly suitable for mice and small dwarf hamsters. The larger size is more suitable for hamsters that need more space to run comfortably. Because the exercise disc is made of plastic, it is easy to clean if sand, bedding, or urine gets on the running surface.

In short

  • Plastic running disc for mice, dwarf hamsters, and hamsters
  • Available in ø 17 cm and ø 30 cm
  • Open tread with ribbed structure for grip
  • Stable base for placement on the floor of the enclosure
  • Easy to clean
  • Nice as an extra opportunity for exercise and variety

Advantages of the Trixie Treadmill

Open walking surface: your animal can easily step on and off the disc.
Plastic: practical and easy to clean.
Ribbed structure: provides extra grip while walking.
Stable base: the walking disc can be placed loosely on the bottom of the enclosure.
In two sizes: choose ø 17 cm or ø 30 cm to suit your animal and enclosure.

Why choose a treadmill?

A running disc gives your pet an extra way to burn off energy. Many hamsters and mice have active moments in the evening and at night when they want to run, explore, and move around. A running disc can be a nice change of pace during these times, especially if your pet enjoys running on an open surface.

The difference compared to a classic running wheel is that a running disc is flatter and more angled. As a result, it often takes up more space on the floor, but it is easily accessible. Your animal can step directly onto it and get off again just as easily. This makes the running disc particularly interesting as an extra exercise option or as a play element.

At DRD, we always look at the right product role. A running disc can be great fun, but for intensive daily running, a well-fitting running wheel often remains the most controllable basic choice. Therefore, observe how your animal walks closely: the back and body posture must remain as natural as possible.

Which size do you choose?

  • ø 17 cm: suitable for mice and small dwarf hamsters, provided your animal walks comfortably and does not bend too much sideways.
  • ø 30 cm: suitable for larger dwarf hamsters and hamsters that need more running space.

Are you unsure between two sizes? It is better to choose the larger one, as long as the exercise disc fits well in the enclosure and stands stably. An exercise disc that is too small can cause your animal to walk with an unnatural posture. Therefore, always check how your animal uses the disc.

For which animals is the Trixie Running Disc suitable?

  • Mouse: suitable as an extra walking and play element. Mice are active and enjoy using multiple routes and movement options.
  • Dwarf hamster: suitable as an extra exercise disc, especially when the size fits well and your dwarf hamster walks comfortably on the disc.
  • Hamster: suitable in the larger size, provided your hamster walks comfortably and the disc remains stable.
  • Gerbil: not our first choice. Gerbils are strong gnawers and plastic can be damaged.
  • Rat and pygmy rat: not suitable as a matching exercise disc. Rats have a different way of moving and require much larger, sturdier space to move.
  • Guinea pig and rabbit: not suitable. Guinea pigs and rabbits should not use a running disc or exercise wheel.
  • Chinchilla and degu: not the first choice. Larger, more robust running solutions or ample room to move are more suitable for these animals.

How do you use the Trixie Loop Disc?

  • Place the walking disc on a flat, stable spot in the enclosure.
  • Check that the disc can rotate freely and does not come into contact with anything.
  • Ensure there is enough space around the disc so that your animal can safely get on and off.
  • Watch closely how your animal walks on it the first few times.
  • Regularly check whether the disk still spins smoothly and stands stably.
  • Clean the disc when there is urine, sand, bedding, or food residue on it.

Preferably use the exercise wheel as part of a complete setup with sufficient bedding , hiding places , a sand bath , and opportunities for play and foraging . Exercise is important, but remains just one component of a well-designed enclosure.

Running disc or running wheel?

A running disc and a running wheel both have the same basic function: your animal can run on them. However, animals use them differently. A running wheel stands upright and has a more closed running direction. A running disc is tilted more and therefore requires a different body posture.

For some animals, a running disc is a nice extra, while others run more comfortably in a classic exercise wheel. Therefore, always observe your animal. Does your hamster or mouse run in a relaxed, stable manner and without noticeable sideways curvature? Then the running disc can be a nice addition. If you notice that your animal walks awkwardly or does not use the disc comfortably, it is better to choose a suitable exercise wheel.

Use for hamsterscaping

In a hamsterscape, a running disc can be useful when you want to create an open area for movement. Place the disc on a stable, flat area, such as a platform or a firm surface. Do not place it loosely on a deep, unstable layer of bedding, as the disc may tilt.

Also consider the space. A running disc takes up more floor space than an upright running wheel. Therefore, place it so that the rest of the enclosure still has enough room for digging, hiding, foraging, and creating routes.

Cleaning and maintenance

The running disc is made of plastic and is therefore easy to clean. First, remove sand, bedding, and food residue. Then, wipe the running surface with a damp cloth or a suitable cleaning agent for animal enclosures. Allow the disc to dry thoroughly before putting it back in place.

Regularly check that the disc still rotates smoothly, that the base stands firmly, and that no cracks, sharp edges, or gnaw marks have formed. Plastic is practical, but not gnawing material. If you see any damage, remove the running disc from the enclosure.

Dimensions and specifications

  • Product: Trixie Treadmill
  • Diameter: approximately ø 17 cm and ø 30 cm
  • Dimensions: approximately ø 17 cm and ø 30 cm
  • Material: plastic
  • Suitable for: mouse, dwarf hamster and hamster
  • Use: running, movement, and extra variety in the enclosure

Compound

Plastic is easy to clean, but it is not gnawing material. Therefore, always provide animals that like to gnaw with sufficient suitable gnawing material and check the running disc regularly for gnawing damage.

Good to know

The Trixie Running Disc operates without a ball bearing. As a result, depending on usage and placement, the disc may make more noise or rotate less smoothly than a premium running wheel with a ball bearing. A running disc also takes up more floor space than an upright running wheel. Place the disc stably, check regularly for wear, and only use it when your animal runs on it comfortably and safely.

Frequently asked questions about the Trixie Treadmill

What is better: a running disc or an exercise wheel?
