The Trixie Sand Bath with Platform is a sturdy ceramic sand bath for small rodents who enjoy sand bathing. The sand bath is available in two sizes and features a convenient platform, allowing your pet not only to bathe but also to sit, rest, or use the sand bath as part of their enclosure decor.
DRD selects sandboxes primarily based on size, stability, material, and practical placement within the enclosure. This ceramic sandbox is sturdy, easy to clean hygienically, and, thanks to the platform, just a bit more versatile than a simple open sandbox.

A sand bath is an important part of daily care for many small rodents. Animals such as dwarf hamsters, hamsters, gerbils, and degus use sand to roll in, groom their fur, and remove excess oil from their coats.
The platform makes this sandbox extra practical. Some animals use the platform as a step, while others sit on it for a moment to rest or observe their surroundings. As a result, the sandbox becomes not only a bathing spot but also a small part of the enclosure's decor.
Ceramic is a great choice of material in this regard. It is sturdy, smooth, and easy to clean. Due to its weight, the sandbox usually remains more stable than a lightweight plastic box.
For rats, guinea pigs, and rabbits, a sand bath is not suitable for grooming. Rats do not bathe in sand, and fine sand can be taxing on their respiratory system. Guinea pigs and rabbits groom their fur differently and do not need a sand bath.
The Sandpit with Platform is available in two sizes. Do not choose solely by species name, but primarily by the size of your animal and how much space it needs to roll comfortably.
When in doubt, the larger size is often more comfortable, especially if your animal likes to roll actively or if the sand bath will have a permanent place in the enclosure.
For dwarf hamsters, a sand bath is essentially a basic item in their home. They use the sand to roll, keep their fur clean, and groom themselves. The 20 cm version is usually suitable for dwarf hamsters and provides enough space to bathe comfortably.
Place the sand bath low and stable in the enclosure. Dwarf hamsters have poorer vision of height and depth, so ensure they can easily get in and out of the sand bath without high points of failure around the platform.
For hamsters, and especially Syrian hamsters/Golden hamsters, sufficient room to move is important. Therefore, usually choose the 24 cm variant when your hamster is a bit larger. The animal must be able to turn around properly and roll in the sand without feeling stuck or restricted.
Use the sand bath as a permanent care area in the enclosure. Place it in a stable spot, preferably not directly under a high platform or in a place where a lot of bedding is pushed into the bath.
Gerbils enjoy using sand to roll and keep their fur in good condition. Because gerbils are active and often live together, the 24 cm variety is usually the most logical choice. It provides more space and is more practical for more intensive use.
Place the sand bath securely for gerbils and check regularly to ensure that no large amounts of bedding have ended up in it. Gerbils can move things around a lot while digging, so a fixed, easily accessible sand spot works best.
Degus need a sand bath for grooming. The 24 cm variant is most suitable for degus, as they need more space than small hamsters or mice. However, always check the actual size of your animals and whether they can turn around comfortably.
Degus can move actively and powerfully. Therefore, place the ceramic sandbox on a stable surface and regularly check that the platform, edges, and bottom are still intact. Always use suitable bath sand and replace the sand on time.
Ceramic is a practical material for a sandbox. It is smooth, sturdy, and easy to clean. Sand, dust, and small debris stick to the surface less easily than with rougher material.
Always check the ceramic for cracks or sharp edges. Do not use the sandbox if the ceramic is damaged.
Tip: Place the sandbox in a quiet, easily accessible spot. This way, it becomes a designated care area in the enclosure and the sand bath is easier to keep clean.
The platform gives the sandbox an extra function. Animals can sit on it for a moment, step onto it, or use the sandbox as a small resting point in the enclosure. This can be especially fun for small animals, as it makes the sandbox not only a bathing spot but also an object to explore.
Ensure that the platform remains easily accessible and that no high points of failure are created. The sandbox should be positioned low and stable within the enclosure.
A sandbox is used daily and must therefore be checked regularly. Remove droppings, bedding, and dirt from the sand. Replace the sand when it is dusty, damp, or dirty.

The sand bath is suitable for mice, dwarf hamsters, hamsters, gerbils, and degus. Choose the size based on the actual size of your animal.
The sandbox is available in 20 cm and 24 cm. The dimensions are approx. ø 20 cm / 21 × 8 cm and approx. ø 24 cm / 25 × 9 cm.
For a dwarf hamster, the 20 cm variant is usually suitable. If you want extra space or have a spacious enclosure, the 24 cm variant can also be nice.
For gerbils, the 24 cm variant is often the most pleasant choice, because gerbils actively roll, dig, and like to use a bit more space.
Yes, the sandbox is suitable for degus. For degus, preferably choose the 24 cm variant and check if your animals have enough room to bathe comfortably.
No, we do not consider sandboxes suitable for rats. Rats do not bathe in sand, and fine sand can be taxing on their respiratory system.
No, guinea pigs and rabbits do not need a sand bath like hamsters, gerbils, or degus. They groom their fur in a different way.
Use suitable bath sand or chinchilla sand. Never use shell sand or sharp sand, as this can damage the skin and coat.
A layer of about 2–4 cm is usually practical. The sand should be deep enough to roll in, but the sandbox does not need to be completely full.
The platform can be used as a step, seat, or resting place. It makes the sandbox just a little more versatile in its layout.
