The Hugro Hemp Mat is a soft, natural mat made of untreated hemp fibers. You can use the mat as a soft underlay, pee pad, resting place, nesting material, sniffing mat, or practical floor protection in the enclosure. Because the mat is available in multiple sizes, you can use it for small corners, platforms, complete floor sections, or larger enclosures.
At DRD, when it comes to hemp mats, we focus primarily on their actual use within the enclosure. For guinea pigs, rabbits, rats, and ferrets, the mat is useful as a soft resting or potty spot. For mice, dwarf hamsters, hamsters, and gerbils, the mat is particularly interesting as extra nesting material, plucking material, or enrichment alongside a thick layer of diggable bedding. This way, you don't use the mat as a standard solution for everything, but precisely where it adds value.
✔ Made from natural hemp fibers
✔ Absorbent and pleasant as a pee mat or resting place
✔ Soft on paws and nice as an extra underlayer
✔ Small rodents can pluck loose fibers as nesting material
✔ Can be cut to size for different places in the enclosure
A hemp mat is handy when you are looking for a soft, natural, and easy-to-install underlay. You can place the mat, for example, on a platform, in a favorite resting corner, under a dog house, in a transport box, or on a part of the floor where your pet likes to lie. For animals that often sit or lie in fixed spots, such a mat can provide just that little bit more comfort and grip.
For guinea pigs and rabbits, the Hemp Mat is often used as a pee mat or soft floor mat, especially when the animals use their toilet area fairly neatly. The mat absorbs moisture and keeps the floor better protected. As soon as the mat is saturated or no longer smells fresh, you simply replace it with a new piece.
For small rodents, the mat is particularly interesting as extra enrichment. Mice, dwarf hamsters, hamsters, and gerbils need a thick layer of diggable bedding as a base, but a piece of hemp mat can be great fun to pluck at, move around, or incorporate into their nest. This provides your animal with extra activity and allows it to collect material itself.
| Mate | Thickness | Practical use |
|---|---|---|
| 25 × 40 cm | approx. 10 mm | Great for small corners, platforms, transport boxes, nesting material, or a compact potty area. |
| 40 × 100 cm | approx. 15 mm | Handy for larger bedding, guinea pig and rabbit areas, rat platforms, or custom work. |
| 50 × 120 cm | approx. 15 mm | Largest size for spacious enclosures, larger base sections, or for cutting multiple pieces to size yourself. |
Do you want to make the mat fit a platform, toilet area, or corner? Feel free to cut it to size. For clean edges and thicker pieces, sturdy scissors work best.
For ferrets, the mat can be used as a natural underlay or resting place, provided your ferret uses the mat properly. For birds, the mat can be used as bedding or an underlay, but always check that your bird is not pulling too hard on the fibers or getting caught on them.
For guinea pigs, rabbits, rats, and ferrets, you can use the Hemp Mat as a soft floor mat or pee mat. Place the mat in a fixed spot where your animal likes to lie or where you want extra protection. For animals that use a litter box, the mat works particularly well next to or around the toilet area.
Is your pet not house-trained or does it frequently urinate in one spot? Then it can be useful to use the hemp mat per zone, so you only need to replace the used section. You can also combine the mat with a matching underlay or house-training mat when you need extra protection.
For small rodents, you can cut off a piece of the hemp mat and place it in the enclosure. Your animal can pluck at it, pull loose fibers, and use the material in the nest. This not only provides extra nesting material but also a small activity.
Do you want to use the mat as a snuffle mat? Then gently push a few small snacks, herbs, or kibble between the fibers. Your animal will then have to sniff and search, making the snack time last longer and more closely resemble natural foraging.
You can cut the Hugro Hemp Mat to size for the place where you want to use it. Think of a platform, corner, toilet area, transport box, or a section of the floor. It is better to cut slightly larger first and then trim, so that the mat fits snugly.
Do you work regularly with hemp mats? Then the Hemp Mat Scissors are handy for cutting the mat to size more neatly and with greater control.
Material/composition: hemp fibers.
Hemp fibers are natural, sturdy, and fiber-rich. This makes the mat suitable as a soft underlay, absorbent floor mat, and picking material. Use the mat dry and replace it as soon as it is saturated, dirty, or pulled apart too much.
25 × 40 cm: approx. 10 mm thick.
40 × 100 cm: approx. 15 mm thick.
50 × 120 cm: approx. 15 mm thick.
Always offer the Hemp Mat tailored to the animal and its behavior. Check regularly for wear, loose pieces, and wet spots. Replace the mat when it is saturated, no longer smells fresh, or has pulled apart too much.
For burrowing animals such as dwarf hamsters, hamsters, and gerbils, a hemp mat is not a substitute for a thick layer of burrowable bedding. For these animals, use it primarily as extra nesting material, enrichment, a platform base, or a temporary comfort piece.
You can use the Hemp Mat as a pee mat, soft resting place, underlay, nesting material, sniffing mat, or floor protection. The best use depends on your animal and its location in the enclosure.
Not as the sole bedding. Hamsters need a thick layer of diggable bedding. A piece of Hemp Mat can be nice as nesting material, a sniffing mat, or an extra soft spot.
