Aluminum Cooling Plate for Rodents and Rabbits

The Aluminium Cooling Plate is a practical cooling spot for rodents and rabbits during hot days. Aluminium naturally feels cooler than many other materials and can therefore provide a comfortable spot for your animal to lie down on when it needs to cool down.

When it comes to cooling products, DRD focuses primarily on practical use, material, and size. This cooling plate is easy to place in the enclosure, easy to clean, and 100% chew-proof. This makes it a great choice for owners looking for a sturdy, hygienic, and reusable cooling spot for the summer period.

Why choose an aluminum heatsink?

Many rodents and rabbits naturally seek out a cooler spot when it gets hot. In nature, animals do this by retreating into shade, a burrow, a cooler part of the ground, or a sheltered spot. In an enclosure, you can assist with this by offering different temperature zones. A cooling plate gives your animal the choice to lie on a cooler surface on its own.

Aluminium is suitable for this purpose because it is sturdy, smooth, and easy to clean. Unlike soft cooling mats or plastic products, this plate is not attractive as chewable material. This makes the cooling plate particularly interesting for animals that like to nibble on edges, corners, or loose materials.

The cooling plate is not a substitute for good summer management. Therefore, always ensure shade, ventilation, a cool location, sufficient rest, and supervision during hot days. Use the plate as an additional tool so that your animal can choose for itself whether it wants to lie in the cooler spot.

Which size do you choose?

Mate Practical use
12 × 8 × 0.2 cm For small animals or as a small cool spot in a corner of the enclosure.
20 × 15 × 0.2 cm For medium-sized animals or as a more spacious resting place for small rodents.
30 × 20 × 0.2 cm For larger animals or animals that like to lie with a larger part of their body on the plate.

Choose the size not only based on the animal species, but primarily on the actual size of your animal and how it uses the plate. For rabbits and larger guinea pigs, one small cooling plate is often too limited; in that case, the largest size makes more sense, or you can place multiple plates side by side.

For which animals is the Aluminum Cooling Plate suitable?

  • Mouse: suitable as a small cool spot in the enclosure. Choose the smallest size and place the plate stably on a flat surface.
  • Dwarf hamster: suitable as an extra cooling spot during warm days. The smallest size is often sufficient, but always consider the setup and available space.
  • Hamster: suitable for Syrian hamsters and dwarf hamsters, provided the plate is stable and the animal can choose whether to lie on it.
  • Gerbil: suitable as a gnaw-proof cooling spot. Place the plate so that it cannot become buried or unstable.
  • Dwarf rat: suitable when the size matches the body size of the individual dwarf rat. Since dwarf rats can vary in size, the actual size of the animal is the primary deciding factor.
  • Rat: suitable as a cool resting place, especially in the larger size. Place the plate in a stable location where rats can easily reach it.
  • Guinea pig: suitable as an extra cooling spot during hot days. For guinea pigs, the larger size is usually more logical so that they can lie on it more comfortably.
  • Rabbit: suitable as an additional cooling spot in the enclosure or run. For rabbits, preferably choose the largest size or use multiple plates, as rabbits require more body surface area.
  • Chinchilla: suitable as a cool resting place. Place the plate in a dry, stable location away from damp areas of the enclosure.
  • Degu: suitable as a sturdy, gnaw-proof cooling spot. Ensure that the plate is placed stably and cannot tip over in a digging zone.

How do you use the cooling plate?

  • Place the cooling plate on a flat, stable spot in the enclosure.
  • Preferably place the plate in the shade or in the cooler part of the enclosure.
  • Make sure your animal can always choose for itself whether or not to lie on the plate.
  • Do not use the plate as the sole measure in case of heat.
  • Clean the plate regularly with a damp cloth.
  • Check that the plate lies flat and has no sharp damage.

The cooling plate does not need to be complicated to use. It is precisely its simplicity that makes it pleasant: place it down, keep it clean, and let your animal choose for itself. Some animals use the plate immediately, while others need a little more time to get used to it.

Summer tip from DRD

Use the cooling plate as part of a complete summer approach. Do not place the enclosure in direct sunlight, ensure adequate ventilation without drafts, provide shade, and check your animal extra carefully during hot days.

  • Place the cooling plate in a quiet part of the enclosure.
  • Combine with shade and a cool location
  • Check drinking water and feeding areas more often in warm weather
  • Keep a very close eye on vulnerable animals.
  • Always let your animal choose for itself whether to use the plate.

Good to know

Always use the Aluminium Cooling Plate as an additional cooling spot and not as the sole solution during heat. At high temperatures, it remains important to place the enclosure in a cool spot, avoid direct sunlight, and monitor your animal closely. Is your animal lethargic, breathing unusually fast, not eating, or do you have any concerns? Then contact a veterinarian.

Check the plate regularly for damage and keep the cooling area clean. Do not place the plate on an unstable surface and prevent animals from knocking it over, undermining it, or trapping it.

Frequently asked questions about the Aluminum Cooling Plate

Does the aluminum cooling plate need to go in the refrigerator?

That is usually not necessary. Aluminium naturally feels cooler than many other materials. Use the sheet primarily as a cooler resting spot in a shady part of the enclosure.

What size heatsink do I need?

That depends on the size of your animal. For small rodents, the smallest or medium size is often sufficient. For guinea pigs, rabbits, and rats, the larger size is usually more practical.

Is the cooling plate suitable for rabbits?

Yes, the cooling plate can be used for rabbits. For rabbits, preferably choose the largest size or use multiple plates so that the animal can lie more comfortably against or partially on it.

Is aluminium safe to gnaw on?

The plate is 100% chew-proof. However, check the product regularly for damage and only use it in a stable spot in the enclosure.

Does a heat sink provide sufficient relief from the heat?

A cooling plate is a handy tool, but not a complete solution for heat. Always combine the plate with shade, a cool location, ventilation, and extra monitoring of your animal.

Can I use the cooling plate for gerbils?

Yes, that is possible. With gerbils, pay particular attention to ensuring that the plate is placed stably and is not positioned in a deep digging zone where it could tip over or be buried under.

How do I clean the heatsink?

Wipe the plate with a damp cloth and then dry it thoroughly. Do not use harsh cleaning agents on areas that your animal comes into direct contact with.
