Buy a hamster cage – spacious, safe and suitable for burrowing
A good hamster cage gives your hamster enough room to run, burrow, hide, forage and build a nest. That is why DRD Knaagdierwinkel® mainly offers spacious hamster cages, glass enclosures and terrariums that are suitable for a natural setup.
When choosing a hamster cage, pay particular attention to the floor area and whether it can hold a sufficiently deep layer of bedding. Height is less important than a spacious and safe base.
Minimum guidelines for hamster cages
✔ Dwarf hamster: a minimum floor area of 70 x 50 cm.
✔ Syrian hamster / golden hamster: a minimum floor area of 100 x 50 cm.
✔ Bedding depth for dwarf hamsters: at least 15 cm.
✔ Bedding depth for Syrian hamsters: at least 25 cm.
These minimum guidelines are based on the current hamster care information published by the Dutch LICG. More space and deeper bedding are always welcome.

Glass hamster cage or wire cage?
A glass hamster cage or hamster terrarium is often the best choice if you want to create a natural environment. It can hold a deep layer of bedding, keeps the bedding inside the enclosure and makes it easier to add a sand bath, tunnels, houses and hamsterscaping materials.
A wire cage can only be suitable when the floor area is large enough, the base is sufficiently deep and the bar spacing is safe. Many standard hamster cages are unfortunately too small or designed mainly around height, while hamsters primarily need space at ground level.
What does a hamster cage need?
Complete your hamster enclosure with a deep layer of hamster bedding, a suitable hamster wheel, a sand bath, safe hamster houses and natural furnishings such as tunnels, cork and herbs.
