Check the furnishing checklist

1) Which hamster cage is right for your hamster?

A Syrian hamster and a dwarf hamster have the same basic needs (digging, hiding, foraging), but the recommended size differs. Important: hamsters are solitary animals and should always live alone in a single enclosure.

  • Golden hamster : benefits especially from a spacious hamster terrarium with plenty of digging depth and wide zones.
  • Dwarf hamster : also likes plenty of space; pay extra attention to a safe distance between bars in barred cages.

2) Hamster terrarium (glass): why so popular?

If you're looking for a glass hamster terrarium or hamster cage, you're usually looking for an enclosure that allows for deep litter storage. Glass is also clear, easy to set up, and perfect for natural tunnels, cork, vine, and moss-like hamster scaping materials.

Our favorite in this category is the Black Scape terrarium : a glass terrarium with sliding doors and a double grid (ventilation), available in several popular sizes. View the details .

3) Size advice: 100x50x50, 120x50x50 or larger

Many customers specifically search for hamster terrariums 100x50x50 , 120x50x50 , or even 150x50x50 . This makes sense: a larger enclosure allows for more efficient zoning (nesting, sand bath, feeding area, digging area), and it's often easier to keep the setup clean and stable.

Housing Guidelines (practical summary):
  • Syrian hamster (golden hamster) : preferably choose a spacious cage; 100 × 50 cm is often considered a lower limit.
  • Chinese dwarf hamster : 70 × 50 cm is often considered a lower limit.
  • Digging depth : aim for plenty of ground cover: for golden hamsters often ± 20 cm , for dwarf hamsters ± 15 cm or more (the more the merrier).

Tip: Are you unsure about which size to choose? Choose the larger hamster cage. This is usually the best investment for behavior, comfort, and furnishings.

4) Bar cage: what should you pay attention to?

A Ferplast or Savic hamster cage or other barred cage can work well, but only if the basics are right:

  • Deep sub-base (otherwise you cannot provide a good digging layer).
  • Safe bar distance (dwarf hamsters are smaller and faster).
  • Stable construction without sharp edges and with good closures.
  • Sufficient floor space (choose a large hamster cage rather than a “tall and narrow” one).

5) Layout & checklist (must-haves)

Checklist for setting up a hamster cage:

Smart combination: hamster food + variety with hamster snacks and animal proteins .

6) Maintenance & cleaning

  • Daily: fresh water, leftovers removed, check toilet area.
  • Weekly: change part of the litter and remove any dirt; always leave a small area smelling familiar.
  • Sand bath: refresh regularly for a fresh coat care.

Moving your hamster cage? Do it carefully, using a secure transport box. View transport boxes .

7) Safety: pipes, bars and escape

  • Hamster cages with tubes : usually not ideal (small spaces, harder to clean, less flexible to arrange). It's better to choose tunnels built into the substrate.
  • Pay attention to sturdy closures and appropriate bar spacing (especially with dwarf hamsters).
  • Avoid high risk of falling: build wide with multiple “safe routes” rather than steep climbing structures.
  • Use safe nesting material (no cotton-like fibers or fibrous material).

FAQ – Hamster Cages

What's better: a hamster cage or a hamster terrarium?
For many hamsters, a glass terrarium is the most practical: you can provide deep litter and create a very stable setup. A wire cage is also an option, provided the bottom tray is deep and the cage is large enough.

Which size is best: a hamster terrarium of 100x50x50 or 120x50x50?
Both are popular. A 120x50x50 cm enclosure gives you more space for zones and hamster scaping. When in doubt, choose a larger one (especially for a Syrian hamster).

Can I keep multiple hamsters in one hamster cage?
No. Hamsters are solitary. Always keep one hamster per enclosure.

I'm looking for a "glass hamster cage" – is that the same as a hamster terrarium?
Yes. Many people mean a "glass hamster cage" as a terrarium (glass) with good ventilation and sufficient height for substrate.

Which hamster cage accessories are really useful?
Consider additional platforms/feeding stations, mounting hardware, and smart furnishing solutions. View hamster cage accessories .
