Gerbil food bowls – sturdy and gnaw-proof food bowls for gerbils

Gerbil feeding bowls – vigorous feeding in an active digging habitat

Gerbils are curious diggers and true explorers . This is wonderful to watch, but it also means that a light bowl is often knocked over or disappears under the bedding in no time. With the right gerbil food bowl , you create a permanent, recognizable feeding spot where your gerbils can reliably find their daily food – while also allowing you to scatter food for extra enrichment.

At DRD Rodent Shop® , we select food bowls based on stability , hygiene , and suitability for avid rodents. We've been specializing in rodents and rabbits since 2011 .

Sturdy = less mess
Preferably choose heavier materials (ceramic/terracotta/glass/concrete) so that the container remains upright.

Choosing a Gerbil Food Bowl – Quick Selection Guide

Gerbils dig a lot and like to gnaw. Therefore, a heavy, stable container usually works best. If you have a group, consider providing multiple feeding stations to keep things calm around mealtimes.

1) Ceramics & terracotta (most popular)

  • Stays up well and is easy to clean.
  • Ideal for chunks, mixes and small portions of green food.

2) Glass (hygienic and clear)

  • Handy if you want to quickly see what is still available.
  • Can also be used as a water bowl, provided it is positioned stably.

3) Stainless steel / metal (strong, gnaw-resistant)

  • Durable and practical; preferably choose a model that is stable or can be secured.

4) Natural (wood/tree trunk/coconut) – especially nice as a “cup”

  • Gives a natural look and fits nicely into a scape.
  • Handy for dry food/snacks; take extra care with wet food (faster cleaning).

Tip : Want a permanent feeding area? Combine food bowls with water in a fixed setup. Also check out drinking bottles and water bowls .

What is a gerbil food bowl?

A gerbil food dish is a fixed location where you offer (some of) their daily food. This makes it easy to check if they've eaten and prevents everything from disappearing into the bedding . For an extra challenge, you can also offer a small portion at a time .

What types of food bowls are popular with gerbils?

  • Heavy ceramic/terracotta bowls : remain stable, ideal for an active stay.
  • “Rock” or concrete-look feeding bowls : sturdy and practical (less sliding/tipping over).
  • Glass containers : hygienic and you can see the contents at a glance.
  • Stainless steel feeding bowls : durable and gnaw-resistant, handy for a fixed feeding spot.
  • Natural cups (tree trunk/coconut): great for dry food, herbs or treat mixes.

Where do you place a food bowl in a gerbil enclosure?

  • Place the container on a stable surface , preferably on a plateau (this way they can't undermine it).
  • Do not place it directly next to water, so that the food stays dry and fresh.
  • If you have multiple gerbils, consider using two feeding stations to limit hassle around food.

Hygiene & maintenance

Check the bowl daily for soiling. Wash food bowls regularly with warm water (and mild dish soap if necessary) and rinse thoroughly. If you (occasionally) provide fresh food, remove leftovers promptly to keep the bowl fresh. If you see cracks, chips, or sharp edges, replace the bowl.

Checklist – gerbil food bowls safe & practical

Preferably choose a heavy container (ceramic/terracotta/glass/concrete look).
Place on a plateau or solid surface (not in loose digging material).
Combine a permanent feeding station with scattered feeding for enrichment.
For groups: consider multiple feeding stations.
Replace immediately if cracks , chips or sharp edges appear.

Safety

Avoid light or easily gnawed materials that could have sharp edges. Check regularly for damage and ensure the bowl can't tip over. If you notice any noticeable changes in eating behavior or condition, consult a veterinarian.

FAQ – gerbil food bowls

Does a gerbil need a food bowl?
We recommend it: a fixed feeding area makes it easier to check if they're eating properly. For an extra challenge, you can also offer a small portion of the food at different times.

Which food bowl is best for gerbils?
In most gerbil enclosures, a heavy ceramic or terracotta food bowl works best. Ideally, place the bowl on a platform to prevent it from being undermined.

How do I prevent my gerbil from knocking over the bowl?
Choose a heavier material and place the container on a stable surface (e.g., a platform). In an active burrow, this is often the difference between "tidy" and "everything covered in sand."

Can I use the same container for water?
This can be done with a stable (preferably heavy) bowl, but many owners opt for a separate water solution. See drinking bottles & water bowls for more information.

Stable feeding bowls that suit an active digging habitat
Can be cleverly combined with platforms, scattering feeders and fixed feeding areas
