Gerbil Care – Safe Cleaning and Care Products for Gerbils

Gerbil care – hygiene, cleaning and care products for a fresh, safe stay

Gerbil Care – Cage Cleaners and Hygiene for Gerbil Enclosures Gerbils are naturally clean animals, but they live intensely: digging, dragging, and "remodeling" their enclosure daily. With the right gerbil care products, you can keep their enclosure fresh and support a tidy routine, without unnecessary harsh chemicals. In this category, you'll find a carefully selected mix of safe cage cleaners , urine and odor removers , hygiene products, and practical tools.

At DRD Rodent Shop® , we select products that are suitable for an active gerbil habitat: practical, safe, and purposeful. We've been specializing in rodents and rabbits since 2011 .

Fresh without "overkill"
Gerbils love the distinct smell of their nest. Therefore, choose spot cleaning and a safe cleaner for the dirty areas.

Coat care is part of it
A sand bath is the foundation for gerbils. Care and hygiene work best as a complete package.

Choosing a Gerbil Care – Quick Selection Guide

Want to get off to a good start? Choose (1) a safe cage cleaner for harder bits, (2) a urine/odor remover for "hard-to-reach spots," and (3) a hygiene product for periodic maintenance. A sand bath is a standard part of grooming.

  • Lots of digging/turning? Place food and water stations on a stable surface (e.g., a platform).
  • Urine odor? Clean the area and address the cause (remove wet material, dry the area, then treat).
  • Worried about food? Check your supplies for (feeder) moths and use a pheromone trap if necessary.

Tip : Never change everything at once. Always leave a small amount of the familiar bedding/nest scent.

What does gerbil care include?

In this category, you'll find products to help keep the enclosure clean and hygienic , as well as practical tools for daily checks. Think of hard-surface cleaners, products for stubborn urine/odor stains , hygiene sprays, and storage protectors. For "basic care" (food, enclosure, and bedding), you can also check out Gerbil Food , Gerbil Enclosures , and Gerbil Bedding .

Cleaning & hygiene in the gerbil enclosure

  • Daily: remove wet spots, check food remains, change the water.
  • Weekly: Clean local “hot spots” (e.g. under drinking area or favorite corner) and wipe down accessories.
  • Periodic: partial replacement of substrate and a more thorough cleaning of glass/platforms/hard parts.

Gerbils can be sensitive to strong odors. Therefore, choose products intended for animal enclosures and always use them according to the instructions. A good routine is to first remove any dirt or moisture , then clean, let dry thoroughly, and only then re-arrange the enclosure.

Coat care: sand bath is the basis

Gerbils don't "wash" themselves with water; coat care primarily revolves around a suitable sand bath . Therefore, for bath sand, sandboxes, and digging sand, we refer you to the separate category "Gerbil Sand Bath & Sandbox ." Has your gerbil gotten dirty (e.g., due to a sticky spot)? A (dry) shampoo or hygiene solution can sometimes be practical, but introducing it slowly and always observing closely remains important.

Protecting feed and supplies (feed moth & hygiene)

Food and herbs last longest if you store them dry, sealed, and cool. If you see small moths or webs in your supplies, pheromone traps can help you get the problem under control more quickly. You can find more information in our blog about the food moth .

Checklist – Practical & Safe Gerbil Care

Spot clean wet areas daily, refresh in stages.
Use a cleaner intended for animal enclosures; let everything dry thoroughly.
Provide a fixed, stable place for water/food (e.g. via a tray).
Always offer a sand bath for coat care.
Store food in an airtight container and check stock regularly for moths.

Safety

Introduce new products slowly and always use according to the directions. Never give gerbils a "bath" with water. If you notice itching, wounds, lethargy, or unusual behavior, consult a veterinarian with experience with rodents.

FAQ – gerbil care

How often should I clean the gerbil enclosure?
Removing wet areas daily and cleaning localized areas weekly usually works best. It's best to do larger changes gradually, so the group continues to feel safe.

Can I wash a gerbil with water?
No. Gerbils can get cold and often very stressed in water. A sand bath is the foundation for grooming.

What helps with urine odor in the enclosure?
Remove any wet material immediately, clean the area, and let it dry thoroughly. Place the water/food on a stable surface and prevent moisture from seeping into wood or corners.

What can I do about (feed) moths in my supplies?
Check and seal stock, clean the hive, and use a pheromone trap if necessary. Also read our blog about the feed moth for a practical step-by-step plan.
