Want to give your degus a little more of a challenge without replacing their regular diet? Then degu pellets are ideal for enrichment. In this category, you'll find primarily herb and vegetable pellets (such as nettle, plantain, alfalfa, dandelion, and bell pepper) that you can cleverly use in a snack ball, snack plate, or throughout the enclosure. Many pellets consist of 100% dried ingredients (so no "filling" to make them into kibble). Because degus can be sensitive to sugary products, fruit pellets should be given in moderation and preferably as a small treat. As specialists in rodents and rabbits since 2011, we choose pellets that are practical to use and fit well into a foraging routine. Looking for tools for hiding and puzzling? Also check out Degu Play & Forage .
Perfect for scattering or hiding: spicy, high in fibre and fun as a foraging reward.

For variation in texture and taste: ideal in a snack ball or as a “search game” throughout the enclosure.
Paprika pellets →
Beetroot pellets →
Vegetable Explosion Mix →
A good choice if you use pellets primarily as a “fiber reward” and don’t want to feed too lavishly.
Timothy grass chunks →
Pasture grass pellets →
Green oat pellets →
Handy as a “very little extra”, but give fruit pellets sparingly within a low-sugar routine.
Apple pellets →
What do you use degu pellets for?
Pellets are primarily used for enrichment : they make food "active" rather than just a quick snack from a bowl. Scatter a few pellets around, hide them under hay, or put them in a treat ball. This way, your degus will be busy searching, smelling, and puzzling—exactly the kind of activity they enjoy.
Herbs, vegetables or grass: what do you choose?
For most degu keepers , herb pellets and grass/pasture pellets are the most logical choices within a frugal diet. Vegetable pellets are great for variety and foraging. Fruit pellets can be considered an "occasional" option – feed them small and carefully, so your routine remains low-sugar.
How do you give this?
✔ Use pellets as enrichment, not as a basic feed.
✔ Give small portions: a few pellets per deg(o)e at a time is often enough.
✔ Put them in a snack ball/snack plate or scatter them around for foraging fun.
✔ Introduce new flavors slowly and see how your degos react.
✔ Fruit pellets: use sparingly within a low-sugar routine.
Checklist
✔ Hay remains available in unlimited quantities.
✔ Pellets are a treat (foraging reward), not a staple food.
✔ Choose herbs/grass/vegetables and use fruit in moderation.
✔ Combine with foraging toys for more challenge.
✔ Store dry and close the packaging properly.
Safety
✔ Do not give large quantities at a time: it remains a treat.
✔ Be careful with fruit pellets: keep them limited within a low-sugar diet.
✔ Always check that your degus continue to eat well (hay + basic food).
✔ If in doubt about health or appetite: consult a veterinarian.
FAQ
Are pellets the same as degu chunks?
No. In this category, we primarily mean herb/vegetable/grass pellets as enrichment. Complete pellets are part of the basic diet (along with hay).
Can a degu eat apple pellets?
Apples (fruit) contain natural sugars. Therefore, use fruit pellets sparingly and choose herb, grass, or vegetable pellets more often.
How do I really turn it into a foraging game?
Hide a few pellets in hay, put them in a treat ball, or scatter them around the enclosure so your degus have to search for them.
