Why choose the Thordis corner house?

A good shelter gives an animal the opportunity to retreat. This is especially important in an enclosure where a lot is happening: eating, walking, playing, foraging, and contact with other animals of the same species. The Trixie Corner House Thordis offers such a sheltered spot without taking up unnecessary space.

The corner shape is a major advantage in this regard. In many enclosures, corners remain underutilized, even though a shelter can make a very logical placement there. By placing the house in a corner, the center of the enclosure remains freer for movement, bedding, toys, and other furnishings.

The flat roof also makes this house practical. You can use it as an extra seating area, a lookout point, or a place for a food bowl. Guinea pigs and rats, in particular, like to use raised or flat spots as part of their route through the enclosure. This gives the house multiple functions instead of just serving as a shelter.

How do you use the corner house in the residence?

  • Place the house firmly in a corner of the enclosure.
  • Place it directly on the bedding or on a stable, flat surface.
  • Use the flat roof as an extra seat, snack spot, or place for a food bowl.
  • If necessary, place a soft layer of bedding or some suitable nesting material around the house.
  • Regularly check that the house remains clean, dry, and sturdy.

Because the house has an open bottom, it stands directly on the base of the enclosure. This is convenient, as it allows you to refresh the bedding underneath locally when necessary. If the house is used as a permanent sleeping or potty area, more frequent local cleaning is preferable.

For which animals is the Trixie Hoekhuis Thordis suitable?

  • Rat: suitable as a spacious hiding place, resting spot, and extra platform. For a group of rats, it is nice to offer multiple hiding places in the enclosure.
  • Guinea pig: suitable as a wooden shelter for one guinea pig or as an extra house in a larger guinea pig enclosure. With multiple guinea pigs, it is advisable to use several spacious hiding places.
  • Chinchilla: only suitable if the size and furnishings of the enclosure match well. Check extra carefully for gnawing and wear, as this house is not nail-free.
  • Degu: only under supervision and with regular checks for gnaw marks. Degus can gnaw intensively, making checks for wear especially important.

For smaller animals such as mice, dwarf hamsters, hamsters, and gerbils, this house is usually on the large side. Smaller wooden houses or tunnels are often more logical for these animals, as they better suit their size and way of moving.

Material and dimensions

  • Dimensions: approx. 35 × 15 × 37/37 cm
  • Openings: approx. 11 × 11.5 cm (w × h)
  • Material: Cunninghamia lanceolata wood
  • Bottom: open bottom
  • Special features: not nail-free

The house is made of bark wood. This gives the product a natural and rustic appearance. Because wood and bark are natural materials, the texture may vary slightly from house to house. Some bark may also come loose in places; this is characteristic of this type of material and fits the natural look of the product.

Cleaning and maintenance

  • Regularly remove loose bedding and food scraps from and around the house.
  • Clean the area of the house when it is used as a regular urination or sleeping spot.
  • For urine stains, if necessary, use a suitable urine remover for rodent enclosures.
  • Always let wood dry thoroughly before placing it back in the enclosure.
  • Regularly check the house for signs of gnawing, loose parts, or sharp edges.

Wood looks its best when used dry. Therefore, it is best not to place the house directly under a water bottle or in a place where moisture often accumulates.

Good to know

  • The house is not nail-free; therefore, check regularly for wear and gnaw marks.
  • Always use multiple hiding places for group animals so that they can choose where they want to rest.
  • For guinea pigs, a second exit is often desirable in group enclosures; therefore, combine this house with other open hiding places or tunnels where necessary.
  • Replace the product if sharp edges, loose parts, or severe damage occur.
  • Place the house stably, especially when the roof is used as a seating area or platform.
