Product description

Thordis Corner House for a smart corner setup

Thordis Corner House is a wooden hideout that fits neatly into a corner of the enclosure. This creates a sheltered resting spot without taking up unnecessary floor space. The open bottom, corner shape and flat roof make this house pleasant for animals that like to sit sheltered, while also helping owners keep the enclosure clear, practical and natural-looking.

This corner house is available as a 21 cm or 35 cm version. The small 21 cm version is suitable as a hideout for small rodents such as mice and dwarf hamsters. The large 35 cm version is suitable for rats and guinea pigs. For Syrian Hamsters (Golden Hamsters), gerbils and dwarf rats, Thordis falls just outside the ideal size range: the small version is too small, while the large version can feel very big for a single animal or pair.

Why choose Thordis Corner House?

A corner house is useful when you want to organise an enclosure smartly. Many houses take up quite a lot of space in the middle of the enclosure. Thordis Corner House uses a corner instead, leaving more room for walking routes, bedding, tunnels, toys and other enclosure items.

The open bottom means you can place the house directly on the bedding. Your animal can sit sheltered, while the house remains easy to position. The flat roof provides extra usable space: small animals can walk across it, rats may use it as an extra sitting spot and for guinea pigs it can help divide the enclosure in a more playful and structured way.

Thanks to the natural wood look, Thordis fits well into a calm, animal-focused setup. You can combine the house with bedding, hay, moss, cork, tunnels or other wooden items. This makes it not only a hideout, but also a logical part of the route through the enclosure.

Which size should you choose?

The right size depends strongly on the animal you are using the house for. With this product, it is important to look not only at the outer size, but also at how much space your animal needs to move comfortably in and out of the house.

  • 21 cm: suitable for mice and dwarf hamsters. This version is compact and works well as an extra hideout or scaping element for small animals.
  • 35 cm: suitable for rats and guinea pigs. This version is roomier and intended for animals that need more body space.

For Syrian Hamsters (Golden Hamsters), gerbils and dwarf rats, this product is less straightforward. The 21 cm version is too small as a suitable main hideout. The 35 cm version can be used in some situations, but it is often very large for a pair of gerbils or dwarf rats. For large groups of gerbils or dwarf rats, however, the 35 cm version can be interesting as a large shared corner house or extra setup element.

Which animals is this product suitable for?

  • Mouse: suitable in the 21 cm version. For mice, this corner house works well as an extra hideout, route point or resting spot in an enclosure with several hiding places.
  • Dwarf hamster: suitable in the 21 cm version. The house is compact and fits nicely into a natural setup or hamster scaping for dwarf hamsters.
  • Hamster: for Syrian Hamsters (Golden Hamsters), this house is not the most logical first choice. The 21 cm version is too small, while the 35 cm version is relatively large as a standard hamster house.
  • Gerbil: not the first choice for a pair of gerbils. The 21 cm version is too small; the 35 cm version can be used for larger groups or in a spacious enclosure as a large corner element. Always place it securely, as gerbils dig actively.
  • Dwarf rat: not the first choice for a pair of dwarf rats, because the 35 cm version can feel very large. For a larger group of dwarf rats, the 35 cm version can be used as a spacious shared corner house.
  • Rat: suitable in the 35 cm version. The house offers a sheltered spot and the flat roof can serve as an extra sitting spot or route point.
  • Guinea pig: suitable in the 35 cm version. The corner house can be placed as a sheltered resting spot in the enclosure. Make sure guinea pigs can move in and around it easily.

How do you use Thordis Corner House?

Place the corner house low and stable in a corner of the enclosure. Put it on a flat surface or press it lightly into the bedding so it remains steady. Thanks to the open bottom, the house connects nicely with the bedding and your animal can sit sheltered underneath.

For mice and dwarf hamsters, you can use the 21 cm version as part of a route with tunnels, cork, moss and other hiding spots. For rats and guinea pigs, place the 35 cm version mainly as a calm resting spot at the edge of the enclosure, leaving enough movement space in the middle.

Use the flat roof thoughtfully. For small animals, it can be a walking route or feeding point. For rats, it can become an extra sitting spot. For guinea pigs, it is important to check whether the roof is safe and low enough within the rest of the setup.

Material and maintenance

Material: wood / bark wood.

Open bottom: yes.

Wood has a warm and natural appearance, but it does need regular checking. Remove loose bedding, food leftovers and nesting material from and around the house regularly. For light dirt, wipe the wood with a dry or slightly damp cloth. Let the house dry fully before placing it back.

Check the corner house regularly for gnaw marks, loose parts, splinters, sharp edges or protruding fixing points. This is especially important for animals that like to gnaw. Replace the house when it is no longer sturdy or safe.

  • The 35 cm version can possibly be used for large groups of gerbils or dwarf rats, but is often very large for a pair.
