Rat platforms & ladders – more living space, routes and favorite chill spots up high

Tame rat – clever climber who likes to use routes and rest areas With platforms and ladders, you can transform a rat cage into a true "route cage": more levels, more routes, and more resting places. Rats are curious, athletic, and love to be found at the top of the cage. A well-placed platform serves as a waypoint, lookout spot, and sleeping/chilling area; a ladder or suspension bridge completes the route.

At DRD Rodent Shop® , you can choose from practical solutions such as corner platforms, platforms with edges, cork platforms (extra grip), sturdy ladders, and hanging bridges. Includes tips for safe placement, smart combinations, and maintenance. Specialists in rodents and rabbits since 2011.

More levels = more living space
Add platforms as waypoints and create multiple routes through the cage (less crowds, more choice).

Choosing platforms & ladders – quick selection guide

Start with this question: do you primarily want additional routes , a fixed resting spot , or a hygienic, rodent-proof solution? With the right mix, you can build a cage that moves and stays calm.

1) For routes & movement (active cage)

  • Choose several small to medium-sized plateaus as waypoints (preferably 3 smart spots rather than 1 large plateau).
  • Use ladders/suspension bridges to connect two sides of the cage and allow for “circles.”

2) For rest areas (chilling & observing)

  • Platforms with an edge often provide a sense of security and keep ground cover/clutter in place a little better.
  • Create a “rest zone” by combining a plateau with a small house or hammock next to it.

3) For practical maintenance (hygiene & durability)

  • Aluminum/metal: extra strong, durable and easy to clean – ideal for rodents or markers.
  • Cork/wood: natural and with plenty of grip; choose a good routine (spot clean + periodic cleaning).

Pro tip: build routes with short "jumps" and multiple stops. This is safer, and rats are proven to use it more often than a single steep climb.

What types of platforms & ladders can you find here?

In this category you will mainly find accessories that fit the daily "cage life" of tame rats :

  • (Corner) shelves – smart for barred cages: use corners and create extra levels without losing much space.
  • Platforms with an edge – extra support and often a nice chill spot.
  • Cork platforms – natural grip, easy on the paws and fun to climb on.
  • Ladders (straight or playful) – for safe connections between levels and routes along the bars.
  • Suspension bridges – ideal as a “route section” between two plateaus or as a playful path across an open area.

Placement & routes – how to make it safe and attractive

Rats can do a lot, but a cage only becomes truly rat-friendly when routes are logical . Think like your rat: "I want to get from A to B quickly, without any hassle."

  • Work along the edges : place platforms against the bars for support and an overview.
  • Create multiple routes : at least two “roads” to the top prevents traffic jams in the group.
  • Use waypoints : 2–3 small steps are better than one big jump or steep ladder.
  • Combine cleverly with tunnels , hammocks and play & foraging for variety.

Maintenance & hygiene – keeping your interior fresh

Rats sometimes mark with small puddles. This is normal. With the right approach, platforms and ladders can remain perfectly usable:

Spot-clean regularly: remove wet/sticky spots immediately.
Aluminium/metal : wipe with a suitable cleaning agent and dry thoroughly.
Wood/cork : do not “soak”; rather clean specifically and allow to dry completely.
Smartly combine hygiene with toilets and urinals at favorite corners/walking routes.

Checklist – platforms & ladders that “work”

Minimum 2 routes to a higher level (less crowds in the group)
Multiple intermediate stations (shorter jumps = safer)
Stable mounting: no wobbly routes or sliding parts
Material suits your cleaning routine (aluminum is easy, wood/cork is suitable for routine use)
Cleverly combine with cage equipment and ground cover ( ground cover , Ratscaping )

Safety

Regularly check platforms, ladders, and suspension bridges for loose fasteners , splinters (wood/cork), and wear and tear. Position accessories to prevent dangerous falls, and use multiple intermediate stops rather than a single steep route. Pay extra attention to young, older, or less stable rats: choose wider platforms and less steep connections.

FAQ – rat platforms & ladders

How many trays do I need?
Guideline: at least 2–3 "stations" distributed across the height, plus connections (ladder/suspension bridge). Build in routes rather than in one large plane.

What's better: wood/cork or aluminum?
That depends on your preference. Aluminum is extra strong and easy to clean. Wood/cork is natural and provides good grip, but requires more routine maintenance.

Are ladders always necessary?
Not necessarily, but they often make routes safer and more clearly defined. A ladder or suspension bridge between two platforms prevents "big jumps" and usually quickly becomes part of the established walking route.

What do I best combine this with?
With tunnels and tubes , houses , hammocks , and play and foraging areas , this creates a cage with choice, challenge, and tranquility.
