Transport boxes for rodents & rabbits

Safe transport with a transport box for rodents and rabbits A good pet carrier provides peace of mind and security while traveling. It's handy for visits to the vet, moving to a new home, overnight stays, or traveling. At DRD Rodent Shop®, you'll find carriers in various sizes and models, tailored to small animals. Specialists since 2011—so you're shopping with practical knowledge and a well-thought-out selection.

Why a transport box?

  • Your animal remains protected and easy to handle (especially in unexpected situations).
  • A closed, familiar “cocoon” helps limit stimuli during transport.
  • The right padding prevents slipping and sliding.

What do you pay attention to when choosing?

Size & stability
Large enough to sit or lie down in, but not so spacious that your pet will slide when braking or cornering.
Ventilation without draught
Good ventilation is essential. Don't place the box in direct sunlight and avoid drafts from open windows or ventilation grilles.
Easy to open & clean
A secure closure and (where possible) a top opening make control and handling much more practical.

Pack comfortably (practical and quiet)

A transport crate is most comfortable when the floor isn't slippery and your pet has something familiar to hold on to. This works for both short trips and longer waits at the vet.

  • Base layer: Use a layer of ground covering or a towel to prevent slipping.
  • Extra grip (rabbits & guinea pigs): an anti-slip mat provides grip and prevents sliding on a smooth surface.
  • Start calmly: you can lightly spray the mat with a calming spray . Then let it air out before your pet enters the crate.
  • Small rodents: combine a tuft of nesting material with ground cover so your pet can hide away.
  • Something to nibble on: For herbivores, some hay is ideal. For other animals, a small, familiar nibble along the way can be helpful (choose something that doesn't crumble or give off a strong odor).
  • Hiding place: If suitable, add a compact, familiar house or a piece of cardboard. For rodents that chew a lot, keep it simple and controllable.

By animal species: useful points of attention

  • Hamsters & mice: compact transport often works best; bedding and nesting material provide the opportunity for them to disappear. Also check out the species hubs: hamster and mouse .
  • Gerbils: A stable substrate (not too loose) helps with startle reactions during movement. Gerbil hub .
  • Rats: Choose sufficient space and secure closures. Bring something familiar that won't fray or come loose. Rat hub .
  • Guinea pigs: a non-slip base is often helpful. Bring hay for the journey. Guinea pig hub .
  • Rabbits: Choose a box that your rabbit can sit or lie comfortably in, with good grip on the floor. Rabbit hub .

Pre-departure checklist

  • Custom-made box: sitting/lying down is possible, but no sliding.
  • Surface with grip: ground cover, towel or anti-slip mat.
  • Familiar scent: a small amount of nesting material or a familiar piece of cardboard.
  • Ventilation: do not cover the air vents; be aware of heat in cars/public transport.
  • Securing the box: place the box stably (e.g. with a belt) so that it does not tip over.
  • For herbivores: bring hay; for others, a small, familiar nibble.

Hygiene & maintenance

  • Clean the box after use and let it dry thoroughly.
  • Replace bedding after a vet visit or if it becomes damp.
  • Check closures and edges regularly for wear or gnaw marks.

FAQ Transport Boxes

What size transport box do I need?
Guideline: Your animal should be able to sit/lie comfortably, but not have so much space that it slides around during transport.

Can I transport multiple animals together?
Sometimes yes (for example, pairs/groups of animals that always live together). Ensure there's enough space and observe whether stress leads to unrest. For solitary animals, separate transport is usually more convenient.

Can I put a cloth over the transport box?
This can limit stimuli. Always ensure that ventilation holes remain clear and that the room doesn't get too hot.

I'm in doubt: what is the best choice?
