The Sputnik XL is particularly well-suited for climbing rodents that like to lie higher up and can rest together. Why choose a Sputnik?

For which animals is the Savic Sputnik XL suitable?

• Mouse: suitable as a hanging or standing house. Mice enjoy climbing and can use the Sputnik as an elevated resting place, group spot, or part of a climbing route.
• Dwarf hamster: only suitable when you use the Sputnik low and stable on the floor as an extra open hiding place. For the actual nest, dwarf hamsters usually prefer a more enclosed house.
• Hamster: can be used low on the ground as an open extra resting place, but is not our first choice as a primary hiding place. Hamsters are ground animals and usually benefit more from deep bedding, a closed house, and a clear nesting area.
• Gerbil: not our choice. Gerbils gnaw intensively and often do not use plastic in a way that fits well with their natural setup. For gerbils, choose sturdy wooden, ceramic, or natural hiding places instead.
• Dwarf rat: suitable as a hanging house or standing house. Because dwarf rats can vary in size, always consider the passageway, body structure, and usage of your own animals.
• Rat: very suitable as a spacious hanghouse. Rats enjoy climbing and often use the Sputnik as a communal resting place, especially when it is logically positioned along a climbing route.

This Sputnik is not suitable as a house for guinea pigs, rabbits, chinchillas, and degus. The size, shape, and hanging method do not suit their body size and way of moving.

Use hanging or standing

You can hang the Savic Sputnik XL from the bars of the cage. This works especially well for mice, pygmy rats, and rats. Hang it so that your animals can reach it easily and safely, for example via a platform, ladder, tunnel, hammock, or climbing route.

You can also place the Sputnik on the bottom of the cage. This is useful when you do not have a wire cage, when you want to use it at a lower level, or when you want to offer it as an extra hiding place. In that case, place it stably on a flat surface so that it does not wobble when your animal climbs into it.

For hamsters and dwarf hamsters, use the Sputnik only low on the floor. Do not hang it high for these animals, as hamsters are not climbing animals and a fall can quickly have serious consequences.

Why plastic can be useful

A major advantage of plastic is that it is easy to clean. This is especially practical for mice, pygmy rats, and rats, because these animals can mark their territory and houses can therefore get dirty more quickly.

You can easily wipe down the Sputnik with a damp cloth and let it dry thoroughly before putting it back. This keeps the little house fresh, and you can easily incorporate it into your regular cleaning routine.

One spacious Sputnik can become a favorite group spot, but always combine it with additional houses, hammocks, and hiding places. This allows animals to sleep together but also to isolate themselves when they feel the need.

For rats, the XL size is a great choice because there is more room than in a small Sputnik. Young rats, dwarf rats, and smaller rats, in particular, can often lie comfortably together in it. For larger rats, always consider the size of the animals and how much space they need together.

Placement in the cage

Hang the Sputnik in a place where your pet can easily get in and out. A good route to it makes the house more attractive and prevents awkward climbing. Consider a platform next to it, a sturdy tunnel, a hammock as an intermediate step, or a wire wall that rats can easily climb up.
