Product description

Trixie Seagrass Swing 19 cm for Birds, Mice and Rats

The Trixie Seagrass Swing 19 cm is a natural seagrass swing with play wood and a handy metal clip. You can easily hang the swing in a birdcage, aviary, or suitable rodent enclosure. This creates a playful place to climb, wobble, explore, and nibble.

DRD selects this product primarily as an enrichment for birds such as canaries and budgies, but also as a small hanging play element for mice and rats. Thanks to the seagrass, wood, and movable shape, the swing encourages natural behavior, as long as you keep a close eye on it for wear and gnawing marks.

Why choose a seagrass swing?

A swing brings movement into the enclosure. Birds can land on it, wobble, balance, and play. Mice and rats can use the swing as a small climbing and exploration object. It is precisely this slight movement that makes it interesting, because animals must actively use their bodies and balance.

Seagrass has a natural texture. It feels different from smooth plastic or metal and therefore provides more grip. The wooden play elements make the swing extra interesting for animals that like to explore, feel, and nibble.

This swing is compact, making it a good fit for smaller bird cages and as an extra element in mouse or rat enclosures. Always place it in a location where your animal can safely step on and where any misstep is properly cushioned.

For which animals is the Seagrass Swing suitable?

  • Canary: suitable as a natural swing and seat. Hang the swing calmly and stably so that your canary can safely land and step on.
  • Budgie: suitable as a playful swing and climbing element. However, regularly check budgies for gnawing on seagrass, wood, and rope.
  • Bird: suitable for small birds that are the size of a swing of approx. 19 × 19 cm.
  • Mouse: suitable as a small climbing and play element. Hang the swing low or between other climbing options so that mice can safely reach it.
  • Rat: suitable as a small hanging play or gnawing element, but not as a spacious hammock. When using rats, check extra carefully for gnawing, fraying, and loose parts.

This swing makes less sense for hamsters, gerbils, guinea pigs, rabbits, chinchillas, and degus. Hamsters benefit more from low, stable furnishings without high points of impact. Gerbils, chinchillas, and degus can be very destructive, meaning the seagrass and rope can be damaged quickly. Guinea pigs and rabbits are too large for this size swing.

Use for birds

For birds, the Seagrass Swing is a nice change from regular perches. The swing moves slightly, allowing your bird to use its balance. This makes the setup more active and interesting.

  • Hang the swing in a quiet spot in the cage or aviary.
  • Make sure your bird can easily land and step up.
  • Do not place the swing directly above food or water bowls.
  • Combine with natural perches for variety.
  • Regularly check if the seagrass, wood, and clip are still sturdy.

Some birds use the swing immediately, while others need to get used to it first. Give your bird time to calmly examine the new object and discover it for itself.

Use for mice

Mice are active climbers and often find extra structures in their enclosure interesting. The seagrass swing can serve as a small climbing object, resting point, or play element for mice. Do not hang it too high, but rather low or between platforms, branches, and ladders.

  • Hang the swing low and within easy reach.
  • Ensure that there is bedding or another soft, shock-breaking surface underneath.
  • Use the swing as part of a route, not as a standalone high element.
  • Check regularly for gnaw marks and loose fibers.

Use for rats

For rats, this swing is primarily a small hanging play element. Rats are good climbers and enjoy using routes, platforms, ropes, and hanging spots. Due to its size of approximately 19 × 19 cm, this swing is not intended as a spacious rat hammock, but rather as an enrichment for exploring, touching, or clambering on.

Rats can actively gnaw on seagrass, wood, and rope. This is normal, but it also means you must inspect the product carefully. If the swing is gnawed too far, frayed, or unstable, remove it from the enclosure.

  • Use as a small play element or climbing area.
  • Do not hang too high without safe fall breakers.
  • Check extra carefully for gnaw marks on rats.
  • Do not use with rats that intensively destroy rope or seagrass.
  • Replace the swing as soon as it becomes frayed, sharp, or unstable.

Why not for all rodents?

Not every rodent uses a swing in the same way. At DRD, we therefore look not only at the “rodent,” but primarily at behavior, size, and safety. Mice and rats are good climbers and benefit more from hanging or elevated play elements than animals that mainly dig or live on the ground.

For hamsters, we generally do not recommend high or wobbly parts, as hamsters are less able to judge height and depth. This swing is too small for guinea pigs and rabbits. For gerbils, chinchillas, and degus, the material may be destroyed too quickly with intensive gnawing behavior.

How do you hang the Seagrass Swing?

  • Securely attach the metal clip to bars, a hook, or a suitable horizontal bar.
  • Check if the swing can move freely without bumping into anything.
  • Hang the swing at a height that suits the animal.
  • Ensure safe stepping options, such as perches, platforms, branches, or ladders.
  • Do not place the swing directly above food or water bowls.
  • After hanging, check that the clip closes properly and cannot come loose.

Tip: use the swing as part of a route. For birds, this can be between perches; for mice and rats, between platforms, ladders, or other climbing elements.

Natural materials: seagrass, wood and rope

The swing is made of natural materials and therefore has a calm, natural appearance. Seagrass feels sturdy and fibrous, wood provides additional play elements, and the suspension makes it easy to place the swing in the enclosure.

Because natural materials can wear down from playing and gnawing, regular checks are part of use. Check regularly for the development of loose pieces, sharp edges, or fraying.

Cleaning and maintenance

Seagrass is a natural material and does not tolerate prolonged moisture well. Therefore, hang the swing in a dry place and do not place it directly under a drinking bowl or water bottle. If the swing gets wet or dirty, remove it from the enclosure and let it dry thoroughly.

  • Check daily whether the swing is still hanging securely.
  • Regularly check seagrass, wood, rope, and clip for wear.
  • Remove loose pieces immediately.
  • Do not use the swing anymore if it frays, becomes sharp, or comes loose.
  • Let the swing dry thoroughly if it has become damp.
  • Replace the product when it is no longer safe or stable.
