Product description

Tree trunk shelter with removable roof for small rodents

The Tree Trunk Hideout is a sturdy resin hiding place for small rodents such as mice, dwarf hamsters, small hamsters, and gerbils. Thanks to its natural tree trunk shape, this little house fits beautifully into a hamsterscape, gerbilscape, or natural-style decor, while the material remains practical and low-maintenance.

When selecting shelters, DRD always considers the combination of size, material, accessibility, and use within the enclosure. This tree trunk is made of resin, has a closed bottom, and is available in two sizes. The removable roof makes it extra convenient to take a quick look inside, check nesting material, or clean the interior without turning the entire setup upside down.

Why choose this log shelter?

Small rodents enjoy having multiple sheltered spots in their enclosure. A hiding place helps your animal retreat for a moment, sleep peacefully, or observe its surroundings from a safe spot. This tree trunk provides that shelter in a natural shape, making it a perfect fit for an enclosure with bedding, moss, cork, tunnels, and other natural materials.

The removable roof is a major advantage in daily use. You can easily check if the house is clean, if food has been collected, and if the nesting material is still neatly arranged. This is especially handy for hamsters and gerbils, as they like to decorate their hiding places themselves and sometimes even build up a stash.

Because the hideout is made of resin, it is sturdier and easier to wipe down than many wooden houses. Resin absorbs moisture less quickly than wood and can be gently cleaned with lukewarm water. This ensures the house remains practical to use, while the tree trunk look still appears beautifully natural.

Which size do you choose?

This tree trunk hideout is available in two sizes. When choosing, always consider your pet's body size, the opening, and how you intend to use the house in your home's decor.

  • Small size: approx. 15.5 × 15 × 8 cm, with an opening of approx. ø 4 cm. Especially suitable for mice and small dwarf hamsters.
  • Large size: approx. 20 × 20 × 11 cm, with an opening of approx. ø 5.5 cm. Especially suitable for dwarf hamsters, small hamsters, and gerbils, depending on body size and build.

A pet house must be spacious enough for comfortable entry and exit. If you are unsure between two sizes, it is better to choose the larger size, especially if your pet is more sturdily built or uses the house as a permanent sleeping spot.

For which animals is the Log Shelter suitable?

  • Mouse: very suitable as a small hiding place. Mice like multiple sheltered spots and can use the tree trunk as a resting or hiding place.
  • Dwarf hamster: very suitable for hamsterscaping. The tree trunk provides a sheltered spot to sleep, rest, or collect nesting material.
  • Hamster: suitable for smaller hamsters provided the chosen size and opening fit well. For larger Syrian hamsters, the opening of approx. ø 5.5 cm is often too small as a comfortable permanent hiding place.
  • Gerbil: suitable as a hiding place and a natural-looking element in a gerbilscape. Gerbils are active diggers and gnawers, so place the house stably and check regularly for signs of wear.

For pygmy rats, rats, guinea pigs, rabbits, chinchillas, and degus, this tree trunk is too small as a proper hiding place. For these animals, it is better to choose a more spacious house, tunnel, or hiding place where the opening and interior space are well-suited to their body size.

How do you use the tree trunk in the enclosure?

  • Place the tree trunk low and stable on a flat spot in the enclosure.
  • Ensure that the opening remains easily accessible.
  • Use the small house as an extra hiding place alongside other routes, tunnels, and hiding spots.
  • Optionally, place some suitable nesting material in or around the little house so that your animal can furnish it further itself.
  • Regularly check via the removable roof whether the interior remains clean and dry.
  • Clean the shelter with lukewarm water and let it dry thoroughly before putting it back.

In a hamsterscape, you can beautifully incorporate the tree trunk among bedding, a sand bath, cork tunnels, and dried moss. In a gerbilscape, it can serve as a landmark, hiding place, or part of a route through the enclosure. For gerbils, however, ensure that the house is stable, as they dig frequently and may actively move the furnishings.

Hamsterscaping and natural decor

For hamsterscaping, this tree trunk is particularly interesting because it looks natural while remaining practical. The tree trunk shape blends nicely with other natural materials, while the removable roof makes the house easier to inspect. This is handy when you want to create a natural setup that is not only beautiful but also remains manageable in terms of daily maintenance.

Do you want the tree trunk to blend in even more beautifully with the decor? Then place a small amount of dried moss or light natural decoration around the shelter. Keep the opening clear and ensure the roof remains easy to remove so you can continue to check on the little house.

Materials and maintenance

The Log Hideout is made of resin. This material is hard, sturdy, and easy to wipe clean. The house has no open bottom, making it function as a truly compact shelter. The removable roof helps keep the inside easier to clean and allows you to quickly check if everything is still tidy.

Preferably use lukewarm water when cleaning. Avoid harsh cleaning agents and allow the house to dry completely before putting it back. Immediately check during each cleaning whether the edges, opening, and interior are still smooth and clean.

Good to know

Offer the tree trunk as part of a complete setup with multiple hiding places, digging opportunities, and enrichment. Regularly check that the house is stable and free of damage. For animals that dig frequently or move the furnishings around, the house may shift. Therefore, always place it firmly and keep the opening clear.

The large size is suitable for many small hamsters and gerbils, but not automatically for every hamster. Especially with Syrian hamsters, actual body size remains the deciding factor. If your hamster does not fit comfortably through the opening, it is better to choose a larger house with a wider entrance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this tree trunk have an open bottom?
No, this log shelter does not have an open bottom. That makes it different from some wooden or open hiking huts.

What is the advantage of the removable roof?
With the removable roof, you can more easily check if the inside remains clean and dry. You can also quickly see if your pet has collected nesting material or food in the house.

Is this tree trunk suitable for a Syrian hamster?
For many Syrian hamsters, the opening of the largest size is too small as a comfortable permanent hiding place. For a Syrian hamster, it is better to choose a more spacious house with a larger entrance.

Can I use this hiding place for gerbils?
Yes, gerbils can use this log as a hiding place or as part of a gerbilscape. However, check regularly for signs of wear and tear and place the house securely, as gerbils actively dig and gnaw.
