Product description

Trixie Igloo with Cooling Stone 15 cm for Small Rodents

Cooling product for rodents during hot days The Trixie Igloo with Cooling Stone 15 cm is a compact ceramic shelter for small rodents during warm days. The igloo provides your animal with a sheltered spot to retreat to, while the removable ceramic cooling stone ensures a cooler surface to lie on or walk over.

DRD chooses ceramic summer products because small rodents like to seek out a cooler spot when it gets hot. In nature, many small rodents retreat into cooler burrows and sheltered places. With this igloo, you give that idea a practical place in the enclosure: shelter on top and a loose cooling stone as a floor.

Why choose an igloo with a cooling stone?

During warm days, small rodents like to seek shelter. A regular open cooling stone can be nice, but not every animal will lie on it immediately. This igloo combines cooling with a hiding place. This makes the product extra attractive for animals that like to sit sheltered.

The loose cooling stone forms the floor of the igloo. This allows your pet to choose whether to sit on the cooling stone, walk over it briefly, or simply use the shelter of the igloo. You can also use the igloo without the cooling stone, for example, when you simply want to use it as a ceramic shelter outside the warm season.

The rough, unglazed ceramic feels different from smooth glazed ceramic. The surface is somewhat rougher, giving animals more grip. When they walk over it, this can also help with the natural wear and tear of their nails.

For which animals is the Igloo with Cooling Stone suitable?

  • Mouse: suitable as a compact ceramic shelter and cool spot. Due to its size, the igloo fits nicely in small mouse enclosures.
  • Dwarf hamster: very suitable as a cool hiding place during warm days. The opening and interior space are well suited to dwarf hamsters.
  • Gerbil: suitable as a compact, cool hiding place, provided the size suits your gerbils well and the igloo stands stably. Regularly check that the cooling stone and igloo remain neatly in place for gerbils.

For Syrian hamsters, this igloo is usually too compact. The opening and interior space are primarily designed for smaller animals. For rats, guinea pigs, rabbits, chinchillas, degus, and ferrets, this product is too small as a shelter; for these animals, it is better to choose a larger cooling product or a more spacious ceramic resting place.

Use for dwarf hamsters

For dwarf hamsters, this igloo is especially nice as a summer house. Place it in a stable, easily accessible spot in the enclosure. For example, you can place the igloo near a sand bath, on a flat part of the bedding, or on a sturdy platform.

Ensure your dwarf hamster can easily get in and out. Do not place the igloo high and prevent the formation of landing spots around it. A dwarf hamster must be able to choose for itself whether to use the cooling stone or prefer to lie in another spot.

For use in mice and gerbils

For mice, the igloo can be a nice, cool hiding place, especially when the enclosure gets warmer in the summer. Place the igloo in a quiet, stable spot and check regularly that the cooling stone remains in place.

The igloo can also be used for gerbils, but pay close attention to the setup. Gerbils dig and move a lot of bedding. Therefore, place the igloo firmly and check that it is not undermined, tilted, or filled with bedding.

How do you use the cooling stone?

For extra cooling, you can briefly place the igloo and the cooling stone in the refrigerator before use. Afterwards, place the parts back in the enclosure. Use the refrigerator for this and not the freezer, so that the ceramic does not get too cold for your pet's paws and belly.

  • Place the igloo and/or cooling stone in the refrigerator briefly.
  • Then place the igloo back in the enclosure securely.
  • Use the cooling stone as a loose floor in the igloo.
  • You can also use the igloo without a cooling stone.
  • Check if your animal can easily get in and out.
  • Always let your animal choose for itself whether to use the cool spot.

The combination of igloo and cooling stone provides the greatest cooling effect. It is also possible to use only the igloo, for example as a ceramic house outside the summer period.

Ceramics: cool in summer, pleasantly sheltered in the living area

Ceramic naturally feels cooler than many wooden or fabric materials. As a result, it is a pleasant addition to the living space in the summer. The material takes on the ambient temperature and can feel temporarily extra cool if placed in the refrigerator beforehand.

Because this product is made of rough/unglazed ceramic, it has a rougher surface. This provides grip and makes it less slippery than many glazed ceramic products. However, check the ceramic regularly for cracks, sharp edges, or damage.

Does this igloo fit into Hamsterscaping?

Yes, this igloo fits nicely into a summery Hamsterscaping setup for dwarf hamsters. Thanks to its compact size, you can use it as a cool hiding place among bedding, sand, cork, tunnels, and other natural materials.

Always place the igloo stably. Do not place ceramic on top of loose, deep bedding where it could tip over or sink. A flat surface, a sturdy platform, or a lower part of the enclosure often works best.

Summer: cooling is more than one cooling product

A cool house is a nice addition, but it does not replace a good summer approach. On hot days, ensure that the enclosure is not in direct sunlight, that the space remains sufficiently cool, and that your animal can always choose between a cooler and a warmer spot.

  • Never place the enclosure in direct sunlight.
  • Ensure adequate ventilation without drafts.
  • Offer multiple resting places, not just the cool igloo.
  • Check on your animal's behavior more often when it is hot.
  • Use cooling products as an optional spot, not as a mandatory resting spot.

Animal welfare label

This igloo bears the Tierschutz-Kennzeichen. This is an Austrian animal welfare label for products that have been positively assessed by the Fachstelle für tiergerechte Tierhaltung und Tierschutz. The assessment considers legal regulations, animal welfare, practical application, and the suitability of the product.

For you as an owner, this provides extra reassurance: the product is not only designed as a cool shelter, but has also been evaluated from the perspective of animal-oriented use.

Cleaning and maintenance

Ceramic is easy to keep clean. Remove the igloo and cooling stone from the enclosure when they are dirty, rinse them clean, and allow both parts to dry thoroughly before replacing them. Do not use the product if the ceramic is cracked, sharp, or damaged.

  • Check regularly for cracks, sharp edges, and damage.
  • Clean the igloo and cooling stone when they are dirty.
  • Let the ceramic dry thoroughly before putting it back.
  • Place the igloo stably and low in the enclosure.
  • Do not use the product if parts are damaged.
