The Hopper Grey Hamster House & Bathhouse is a compact ceramic house for mice, dwarf hamsters, and gerbils. You can use it as a hiding place, cooling house, or small sand bath. Thanks to the glazed ceramic, the house is sturdy, easy to clean, and pleasant for animals that like to have a sheltered spot in their enclosure.
This house is especially nice for dwarf hamsters because the opening of approximately 5 cm is wide enough for them to walk in comfortably, even when their cheek pouches are full. This house is too small for Syrian hamsters. For them, you are better off choosing a larger ceramic house or a spacious bathhouse with a larger opening.

Small rodents enjoy having multiple sheltered spots in their enclosure. The Hopper house provides such an extra choice. Your pet can hide, rest, or retreat inside for a moment. Thanks to its enclosed shape, the house feels sheltered, while the ceramic remains sturdy and hygienic.
Are you using the little house as a bathhouse? Then you can put a thin layer of suitable bath sand inside. Due to the upright shape, the sand stays together better than in an open dish.
This little house is handy for owners because it has multiple functions. You can use it as a small sleeping or hiding house, as a cooling ceramic house during warm days, or as a compact sand bath for dwarf hamsters and gerbils.
At DRD, when it comes to small houses, we focus primarily on size, opening, material, and application. This house is well-suited for small animals that need a compact, sheltered spot. It is clearly too small for larger animals, which is why we deliberately limit it to mice, dwarf hamsters, and gerbils.
Would you like to use the Hopper house as a sand bath? Then fill it with a thin layer of suitable bath sand. For dwarf hamsters and gerbils, this can be a nice, sheltered sandy spot. Due to the solid ceramic shape, sand is tracked out less quickly than with a completely open dish.
Preferably use hamster sand bath or gerbil sand bath products intended for small rodents. Shell sand is not a good choice for this, as it can be too sharp for skin and fur.
Ceramic naturally feels cooler than many other materials. As a result, the Hopper house can be a pleasantly cool spot in the enclosure during the summer. Your dwarf hamster, mouse, or gerbil can choose for itself whether to lie inside or prefer another spot.
Place the house in a stable, shaded spot, out of direct sunlight. Ceramics can actually heat up in the sun, so the house works best in a quiet, cool spot in the enclosure.
The Hopper house is made of glazed ceramic. This means the surface is smooth and dense. As a result, urine and dirt penetrate the material less quickly than with untreated wood or porous terracotta. This is convenient for owners, as the house can be easily wiped down or rinsed out.
Ceramics may show minor imperfections. This is inherent to the material and makes every little house just a bit different.
The opening is approximately 5 cm. This is suitable for dwarf hamsters, even when they walk through the opening with filled cheek pouches. This is important, because a dwarf hamster should not have to squeeze through an entrance.
This house is too small for Syrian hamsters. They need a larger entrance and more interior space, especially when walking through an opening with full cheek pouches or wanting to turn around inside a house.
Place the little house on a stable spot, preferably on the ground or on a sturdy platform that is low enough. Thanks to the solid bottom, the sand stays inside the house better when you use it as a sand bath.
| Usage | Practical placement |
| As a shelter | Place in a quiet spot, possibly partially against ground cover or natural furnishings. |
| As a sand bath | Fill with a thin layer of suitable bath sand and place stably. |
| As a small cold storage unit | Use in a shady spot in the enclosure, out of direct sunlight. |
| In scaping | Combines beautifully with cork, moss, sand, ground cover, and natural tunnels. |
Thanks to its compact shape and grey colour, the Hopper house fits beautifully into a natural interior. In hamsterscaping, you can use the house as a small bath house or cooling house. In gerbilscaping , it fits well among sand, cork, bark, and bedding.
A nice DRD tip: place some natural decoration around the little house, such as a bit of moss, pieces of cork, or dried leaves. This way, the house blends in more beautifully with the decor and the enclosure takes on a more natural look.
Glazed ceramic is easy to clean. Remove any sand or bedding from the house and wipe it down with lukewarm water. Let it dry thoroughly before placing it back in the enclosure.
Do you use the little house as a sand bath? Change the sand regularly, depending on how often your animal uses it and whether bedding or dirt gets into it.
The Hopper house is compact. This makes it great for mice, dwarf hamsters, and gerbils, but not suitable for larger animals. For Syrian hamsters, rats, guinea pigs, rabbits, chinchillas, and degus, you would prefer a larger house or a more spacious sand bath.
If you use the house as a bathhouse, a thin layer of sand is sufficient. This way, your pet can bathe without the house becoming too full or awkward.
