• Fat-tailed gerbil: suitable as a base, but fat-tailed gerbils require extra attention regarding animal protein. Therefore, combine this food with suitable insects, such as dried mealworms, crickets, or an insect mix.

This food has been developed for gerbils. For mice, dwarf hamsters, hamsters, rats, guinea pigs, rabbits, chinchillas, and degus, you should preferably choose a food specifically formulated for those animal species.

Why supplement animal protein separately?

Little One Gerbil Food contains no added animal protein. Therefore, for Mongolian gerbils, you can occasionally offer suitable insects or protein snacks separately. For fat-tailed gerbils, this supplement is even more important, as they naturally have a more insect-oriented diet.

Mealberry recommends approximately 10–20 grams of Little One Gerbil Food per gerbil per day. The exact amount depends on size, age, activity, group size, condition, and how much is left over or hoarded.

• Give as daily staple food for gerbils.
• Preferably only refill when most parts have been eaten.
• Use a portion in the food bowl and a small portion as scatter feed.
• Scatter only in a clean, dry spot or in a foraging zone.
• Supplement appropriate animal proteins separately.
• Combine with a well-furnished gerbil enclosure with deep bedding, tunnels, a sand bath, and hiding places.

Switching to Little One Gerbil Food

Switch gradually when changing food. Mix the new food with the old food for the first few days and gradually increase the proportion of Little One Gerbil food. This allows your gerbils to get used to the new scent, taste, and mix texture.

• Day 1–2: mix a small amount of new food with the old food.
• Days 3–5: feed approximately half old, half new.
• Days 6–7: mainly new food with a small amount of old food remaining.
• Then switch completely when your gerbils continue to eat well and their droppings remain normal.
