Chinchilla tunnels: play, hide and explore in the cage

Chinchilla tunnels – run, hide and explore at DRD Rodent Shop®

Chinchillas are curious animals that love to run, hide, and create routes in their enclosure. A good chinchilla tunnel is therefore a real asset: it provides a safe passage, a hiding place, and a playful "race track" all in one. In this category, you'll find a mix of tunnels for different situations: from soft fleece and plush tunnels to natural tunnels made of willow, seagrass, or wood, and even terracotta tunnels for a robust, cool look. As specialists in rodents and rabbits since 2011, we select tunnels that are practical for use in the cage: appropriately sized, fun to decorate, and ideal for adding variety to your chinchilla's daily routine.

Play tunnels (long & active)
For running and "racing" around the cage. Great if your chinchilla likes to move fast or if you want to encourage extra exercise.

Trixie play tunnel 117 cm | Colored play tunnel XXL
Soft & cozy (fleece/plush)
Ideal as a resting spot or sleeping tunnel. Perfect for chinchillas that like to be sheltered and enjoy a "den" feeling.

Nature Fleecy tunnel 31 cm → | Plush relaxation tunnel 80 cm →
Natural tunnels (willow/seagrass/grass)
Beautiful in a natural setting and fun as a play element. Consider woven willow, seagrass, or a grass tunnel with herbs, vegetables, or flowers.

Braided willow tunnel | Seagrass tunnel Laguna 50 cm
Sturdy & robust (wood/terracotta)
For a "permanent" tunnel location in the cage. Wood provides a natural look, while terracotta is sturdy and has a robust surface.

Why a tunnel in a chinchilla enclosure?

A tunnel provides your chinchilla with a clear passageway and hiding place . This aligns with their natural behavior: quickly ducking away, running around, and then relaxing in a quiet spot. Especially with multiple animals, a tunnel (or a T-junction) helps make the cage more logical: there are more routes and fewer dead ends.

Which type of chinchilla tunnel is right for your pet?

Looking for more action ? Choose a longer play tunnel. Want a real place to relax ? Then fleece/plush tunnels and cuddle tunnels are popular. Do you prefer a natural look ? Then woven willow or seagrass will fit beautifully into your decor. And if you want a sturdy, permanent tunnel, wooden tree trunk tunnels and terracotta tunnels are great options. Tip: combine a tunnel with platforms or bridges to add height to your route (and thus more variety in the cage).

Smart design: how to create routes and hiding places

Don't place all tunnels in a single line, but build a "course": a tunnel as a passage, a corner with a rest tunnel, and an additional connection like a bridge. A T-junction (like the Trixie tunnel with T-junction ) is useful for creating multiple routes. Want a tunnel that also functions as a play element? Then consider models with shape/action, like the Cannonball tilting tunnel .

How do you use this?

Place a tunnel in a place where your chinchilla can easily get in and out.
Combine at least one “passage tunnel” with one “rest tunnel” for a balance between active and relaxed.
Change the setup occasionally: this provides new stimuli without having to completely rearrange the accommodation every time.
Clean tunnels according to material (cloth/plush more often, keep natural materials dry and fresh).
Check regularly for wear, loose parts or sharp edges.

Checklist

Choose a tunnel with sufficient diameter: your chinchilla should have plenty of room to move through it.
At least two openings (in/out) are practical as a hiding place, especially with multiple animals.
Combine action (play tunnel) with rest (cuddle tunnel/fleece) for a nice balance.
Choose a material that suits your routine: washable, natural, or extra strong.
Check for wear weekly and replace when necessary.

Safety

Check tunnels regularly for fraying, loose pieces or sharp edges and replace in time.
Make sure tunnels are stable and cannot tip over during play.
Don't place a tunnel in a tight corner where your chinchilla can get stuck; keep the route open.
Keep natural tunnels dry and clean for pleasant use.

FAQ

Which tunnel is most suitable as a hiding place?
Soft tunnels (fleece/plush) and cuddle tunnels are often used as a resting place, because they provide a sheltered and cozy feeling.

Is a tunnel with multiple exits useful?
Yes, that's often helpful. Especially with multiple chinchillas, it provides more route options and prevents one animal from "blocking" a tunnel.

How do I keep tunnels clean for the longest time?
Place them in a logical location (not as a restroom), rotate their placement occasionally, and check for wear and tear weekly. Clean according to material and replace as needed.
