Why choose a wooden play roll?

A play roll gives your animal something to be actively occupied with. Rolling, pushing, sniffing, and nibbling are all small behaviors that make the enclosure more interesting. Animals that are curious or enjoy playing with loose objects, in particular, may enjoy such a roll.

The bell elicits an extra reaction during play. Some animals find the sound interesting and therefore investigate more often where it is coming from. Therefore, use the play roll primarily as a short activity under supervision, so that you can clearly see how your animal interacts with it.

Because the play roll is made of wood, it can be nibbled on. This is part of natural use, but supervision remains important. If the roll is heavily gnawed or the bell becomes exposed, remove the toy from the enclosure.

How do you use the Trixie Play Roll?

  • Place the play roll on a flat spot in the enclosure, run, or play area.
  • Let your animal calmly discover what the roller does.
  • Use the play roll as a short activity under supervision.
  • Remove the toy when your pet starts gnawing on it too vigorously.
  • After use, check whether the wood, the bell, and the openings are still neat.

You can also use the play roll together with other enrichment, such as gnawing material, herbs, tunnels, or foraging toys. This makes playtime more varied without cluttering the enclosure with loose parts.

For which animals is the Trixie Play Roll suitable?

  • Gerbil: suitable as a wooden play and gnawing roll. Gerbils can gnaw vigorously, so check regularly for wear.
  • Rat: suitable as a roll toy for pushing, rolling, and exploring. Rats are curious and may enjoy loose toys as a change of pace.
  • Guinea pig: suitable as a wooden toy to push and nibble on. Use under supervision, especially because of the bell.
  • Rabbit: suitable as a small roll toy or chew toy. Some rabbits really enjoy rolling and pushing.
  • Chinchilla: suitable as wooden enrichment under supervision. Check very carefully, as chinchillas can gnaw vigorously.
  • Degu: suitable as wooden play and gnawing material. Degus are active gnawers, so check the toy regularly.
  • Ferret: suitable as a standalone play roll during supervised play. Remove the roll when your ferret starts destroying it or tries to get the bell off.

Always use the play roll in a way that suits your animal. Some animals roll it around, while others mainly nibble on the wood. Both forms of use can be fine, as long as the toy remains clean and safe.

Resin-free wood for rodents and rabbits

Wood is a natural material. As a result, the color, structure, and finish may vary slightly from play roll to play roll. This gives each toy its own unique natural look.

Cleaning and maintenance

  • Remove loose bedding, dust, or food residue after use.
  • Clean the wood locally only when necessary.
  • Let the play roll dry thoroughly before offering it again.
  • Regularly check if the bell is still properly enclosed.
  • Replace the play roller when the wood is damaged or the bell threatens to come loose.

Preferably do not place the play roller in a wet spot or directly under a water bottle. Wood stays neat longer when used dry.

Good to know

  • The play roll is intended as guided play material.
  • Do not leave the play roll unattended for extended periods with animals that are very destructive.
  • Check the wood and the bell regularly.
  • Remove the toy if the bell becomes visible or comes loose.
  • With strong rodents, the toy may wear out faster; that is part of natural use.
