Versele-Laga Nature Rat is a varied complete food for pet rats and dwarf rats. The mix contains cereals, vegetables, seeds, fruit, nuts, herbs, and 4% mealworms as an animal protein source. As a result, this food is not only a daily staple but also interesting for rats that enjoy searching, collecting, and trying out different textures.
At DRD, when it comes to rat food, we focus primarily on variety, animal protein, forage value, and how well the food suits rat behavior. Rats are curious omnivores: they enjoy a varied diet and are often extra motivated when allowed to search for their food rather than getting everything from a single bowl.

Rats are smart, active animals that enjoy exploring what is happening in their environment. A varied diet fits in well with this. Instead of eating only one type of pellet from a bowl, rats can recognize different pieces, pick them up, move them, and take them to a stash spot.
Nature Rat contains, among other things, barley, peas, tomato, papaya, raisins, seeds, nuts, herbs, and mealworms. This variety provides differences in smell, taste, and texture. This makes this food interesting for rats that enjoy working with their food.
Because it is a mixed diet, portion control is important. Some rats pick out their favorite pieces first. Therefore, it is better to give a measured daily portion and do not refill too quickly when only the tastiest parts are gone. This way, you keep better track of what is actually being eaten.
Rats are omnivores. This means that they can utilize both plant-based and animal-based food sources. The 4% mealworms in Nature Rat make the mix particularly interesting for rats and provide an animal component in their daily diet.
This is practical for owners: the animal protein source is already incorporated into the mix. So, you don't need to mix it separately daily to offer animal variety. Additionally, if you want to provide extra enrichment occasionally, you can do so with suitable rat treats or by hiding part of the daily portion.
This food is intended for rats and pygmy rats. Are you looking for food for mice, hamsters, gerbils, guinea pigs, or rabbits? Then it is better to choose a food that suits that animal species and their daily diet.
The correct amount depends on age, activity, build, and group composition. As a practical guideline, you can assume approximately 15 to 20 grams per rat per day. For dwarf rats, the portion may be lower, depending on the size and condition of the animal.
| Number of rats | Guideline per day | Practical use |
|---|---|---|
| 1 rat | approx. 15–20 g | Weighing helps to limit selection and waste. |
| 2 rats | approx. 30–40 g together | If necessary, distribute over multiple feeding or foraging spots. |
| 4 rats | approx. 60–80 g together | Check carefully that all the animals have enough to eat and that one rat isn't hoarding everything. |
You can offer the food in a bowl, but also spread it partially throughout the enclosure. Rats often enjoy searching for food in a snuffle mat, foraging tray, cardboard box, or among paper and safe enrichment. Preferably use a portion of the normal daily ration for this, so that you do not unknowingly feed them extra.
Quick indication based on 15–20 grams per rat per day.
| Packaging | 1 rat | 2 rats | 4 rats |
|---|---|---|---|
| 700 g | approx. 35–47 days | approx. 18–23 days | approx. 9–12 days |
| 2.3 kg | approx. 115–153 days | approx. 58–77 days | approx. 29–38 days |
Calculation example: 700 g ÷ 20 g = 35 days for 1 rat. With multiple rats, a bag will naturally be used up faster.
Nature Rat is very suitable for stimulating foraging behavior. The different pieces each have their own scent, shape, and texture. This allows rats to actively search and choose. For example, scatter part of the daily portion throughout a dry foraging tray, hide some in a cardboard box, or use a sniffing mat.
In a Ratscaping setup, you can also effectively use food as an activity. Hide small amounts in safe places, such as near tunnels, paper zones, or a digging box with suitable material. This way, you immediately turn feeding into a moment when your rats have something to do.

Store the food in a cool, dry, and dark place. Close the packaging tightly after use to preserve the aroma, taste, and texture as much as possible. Preferably use a sealable storage container once the bag has been opened.
Because mixed food contains various ingredients, keeping it fresh is especially nice. This keeps the pieces appealing and prevents the smell or texture from deteriorating more quickly.
With mixed food, rats may have preferences. Therefore, do not refill too quickly when only the favorite pieces are gone. Provide an appropriate portion and closely monitor your animals' total intake, condition, and activity.
Dwarf rats can vary in size and build. Therefore, do not look solely at the name “dwarf rat,” but especially at your own animals: how big are they, how active are they, and how quickly do they eat their portion?
Would you like to add more enrichment? Then combine the food with foraging toys, tunnels, hammocks, digging bins, paper zones, and a suitable Ratscaping setup. This way, the enclosure is not only filled but also truly interesting for your rats.

Goed
