Product description

Ceramic Fairy Tale Tree Trunk House 18 cm

The Fairy Tale Tree Trunk House 18 cm is a tree trunk-shaped ceramic house for rodents that like to sit sheltered, lie cool, or use a small sand spot. Thanks to its natural tree trunk look, this house fits beautifully into hamsterscaping, gerbilscaping, degu setups, and other natural rodentscaping. It immediately gives the enclosure a fairytale-like, woodland appearance.

Because the house is made of glazed ceramic, it is sturdy, easy to clean, and pleasantly cool on warm days. You can use it as a shelter, cool house, snack or sniffing spot, and for suitable animals, also as a small sand bath or sand tray. For rats, the house is also fun as a shelter or sniffing house, but do not use chinchilla sand or fine bath sand with rats due to their sensitive airways.

Why choose the Fairy Tale Log House?

This little house combines style with practical use. The tree trunk shape immediately makes the enclosure look more natural and cozy, while the ceramic ensures a clean, sturdy, and cool surface. Especially in a natural setting, this house is a lovely eye-catcher: it fits beautifully among ground cover, moss, cork, branches, leaves, and other aquascaping materials.

At DRD, when it comes to ceramic houses, we primarily look at size, openings, ease of cleaning, and product role. This house is spacious enough for hamsters and gerbils, nice as a sand spot for animals that use sand, and also interesting as a shelter or cool house for small rats and degus. For larger animals such as guinea pigs, rabbits, and chinchillas, the house is too small.

Ceramics as a small cold storage unit

Ceramic feels naturally cool to the touch. This makes this little house a pleasant extra cooling spot during warm days. Small rodents like to seek out sheltered places where they can lie more quietly and coolly. A ceramic house thus gives your pet an extra choice in its enclosure.

Use ceramics as an addition to a well-furnished enclosure. Do not place the enclosure in direct sunlight, ensure adequate ventilation, and always provide a quiet, shady spot.

Can also be used as a sandbox

Thanks to the closed bottom, you can also fill the Fairy Tale Tree Trunk House with a layer of suitable sand. For dwarf hamsters, hamsters, gerbils, and degus, the house can then serve as a sand bath or sand tray. The ceramic is easy to clean, and the shape helps the sand stay in one place better.

For animals that truly bathe in sand, use suitable bath sand or chinchilla sand. Do not use shell sand, as it is too sharp. Do not use this house as a sand bath for rats: rats do not need a sand bath, and fine sand can be irritating to their respiratory system. For rats, however, you can fill the house with low-dust sniffing material, herbs, or safe bedding.

For which animals is the Fairy Tale Log House suitable?

  • Mouse: suitable as a hiding place, sniffing spot, and decorative wildlife house. For mice, it is a spacious house that can also work well in a group enclosure.
  • Dwarf hamster: very suitable as a ceramic shelter, cool house, and sand bath. The openings are wide enough for comfortable entry and exit.
  • Hamster: suitable as a spacious ceramic house, cooling spot, or sand bath. This house may also be interesting for Syrian hamsters, provided your animal fits comfortably through the openings.
  • Gerbil: suitable as a ceramic shelter, cool house, and sand bath. Gerbils enjoy using ceramics as a sturdy element in gerbilscaping and can also use sand in them.
  • Dwarf rat: suitable as a small ceramic hiding place or sniffing house, depending on the actual size of your dwarf rat. Dwarf rats can vary from one another, so always consider body build and usage.
  • Rat: suitable as a shelter, cool house, or sniffing house for smaller rats or young rats that fit well through the openings. Do not fill with chinchilla sand or fine bath sand due to the respiratory system.
  • Guinea pig: not suitable; the house is too small for guinea pigs.
  • Rabbit: not suitable; the house is too small for rabbits.
  • Chinchilla: not suitable; the little house is too small as a shelter or sand bath for chinchillas.
  • Degu: suitable as a ceramic shelter, cool house, or small sand bath, provided you match the size well to your degus and the opening can be used comfortably.

How do you use the cottage in the accommodation?

Place the house low and stable on the bottom of the enclosure. Ceramic is sturdy and relatively heavy, so it is important that it cannot tip over or sink. For burrowing animals such as hamsters and gerbils, it is best to place the ceramic on a stable base and build up the bedding around it.

Usage Practical tip
Shelter Place the little house in a quiet spot with the opening easily accessible.
Cold storage Place the ceramic house in the shade and use it as an extra cool retreat.
Sandbox Fill with suitable bath sand for hamsters, gerbils, or degus. Do not use as a sand bath for rats.
Sniffing spot Use a small amount of herbs, flowers, or low-dust material to encourage searching and discovering.
Scaping Combine with moss, cork, branches, and ground cover for a woodland tree trunk look.

Openings and size

The openings are approximately 8 × 10 cm. This makes the house spacious enough for many dwarf hamsters, hamsters, gerbils, and smaller rats to walk in and out comfortably. For hamsters, a wide opening is preferable, as they need to be able to pass through easily even with full cheek pouches.

Always look at your own animal. Body build, age, and size can vary from animal to animal. A home must be spacious enough for the animal to enter, turn around, and come back out comfortably.

What is ceramics?

Ceramic is glazed earthenware. The difference from terracotta is that ceramic has a glaze layer and terracotta does not. Because of this glaze layer, ceramic is smoother, more water-resistant, and easier to clean.

A major advantage of the enclosure is that moisture and urine do not soak into glazed ceramic as quickly. As a result, you can wipe the house down thoroughly and keep it fresh.

Cleaning and maintenance

Ceramic is easy to clean. Regularly remove sand, bedding, or snack residue and wipe the house with a damp cloth. For heavier soiling, you can rinse the ceramic with warm water and let it dry thoroughly before putting it back.

Always check ceramics for cracks, sharp edges, or chipped pieces. Do not use the house anymore if it is damaged or has sharp parts.

Material and specifications

Material: glazed ceramic.

Dimensions: approx. 18 × 19 cm.

Openings: approx. 8 × 10 cm.

Bottom: closed bottom.

Use: shelter, cool house, sandbox, sniffing area, and landscaping decoration.

Particulars: ceramic may show minor imperfections. This is inherent to the material and the finish.

Good to know

Always place ceramics stably and low in the enclosure. Especially for animals that dig frequently, it is important that a heavy ceramic house cannot be undermined, tip over, or sink. Therefore, it is better to build up bedding around the house rather than placing the house loosely on top of a thick, loose layer.

Do not use this house as a sand bath for rats. It is fun for rats as a hiding or sniffing house, but choose low-dust material such as bedding, herbs, or foraging material. The house is too small for guinea pigs, rabbits, and chinchillas.

Zwaar degelijk keramieken huis.
