JR Farm Tiny Treats Protein Hearts Hermetia are firm, crunchy hearts containing 5% Hermetia larvae (black soldier fly larvae). You give them as a complementary food: a small extra treat for rats, hamsters, mice, and other mixed-feed rodents. Handy as a reward during taming, as a training snack, or for enrichment by hiding them in the enclosure.
Nutrition in brief
Insects such as Hermetia larvae are often used in pet food as a tasty protein source. For mixed-feeding rodents (such as rats and mice), a small amount of animal protein can fit within a varied diet, especially if you alternate with vegetables, herbs, and a good basic diet. These hearts are not a complete food, but a treat: that is precisely why they work so well as a reward.
Moreover, the crunchy texture helps keep them occupied. Many rodents are smart and curious; something sturdy to nibble on provides a challenge. For hamsters and dwarf hamsters, it is fun to hide small pieces in the bedding so that they have to search for them.
Popular choices as: insect snack for rats, reward treat for hamsters, training snack for mice
Tip: Break the hearts into small pieces and turn them into a search game. This aligns nicely with natural foraging behavior.
Rat : give as a reward or enrichment. Break a heart into 2–4 pieces, so you have multiple moments without giving much.
Dwarf rat : the same idea as with rats, but usually a smaller piece at a time suffices.
Mouse : break into small pieces; ideal for taming and hand-feeding.
Hamster : occasionally a small piece, or hide it in the enclosure for extra searching fun.
Dwarf hamster : give sparingly (a small piece), especially to animals that gain weight quickly; nice as an extra reward.
Gerbil : give a small piece as a variation alongside a suitable basic food.
Guinea pig/Rabbit, Chinchilla/Degu : this product is intended for mixed-food rodents (omnivores). This snack is not suitable for guinea pigs, rabbits, chinchillas, and degus (herbivores); for these animals, preferably choose plant-based snacks (herbs/hay/vegetable chips).
Composition : maize, wheat, carrot, linseed, peanuts, La Plata millet, Hermetia larvae 5%, manna millet, striped sunflower seeds, vegetable starch, beetroot.
Analytical constituents : crude protein 11.3%, crude fat 12.8%, crude fiber 4.9%, crude ash 2.3%, calcium 3070 mg/kg, phosphorus 2120 mg/kg, sodium 420 mg/kg.
This is an energy-rich snack mix (grains/seeds) with vegetables and 5% insects. Therefore, it is better to give small portions and use it as a reward.
How often can I give this snack?
As a guideline: a small piece a few times a week, depending on the animal species and the total diet. For small animals, a small piece is usually enough.
Are Hermetia larvae suitable for all rodents?
For mixed-feeding (omnivorous) rodents (such as rats and mice), this is a tasty variation. It remains a snack; the basis should consist of a complete diet.
Can I give this to a guinea pig, rabbit, or chinchilla?
This product has been developed for mixed-feeding rodents. Not suitable for herbivores, as they prefer plant-based snacks that match their diet.
How do I present it in the most engaging way?
Break it into small pieces and hide it in the litter, in a foraging toy, or in a snuffle mat. That way, you immediately turn it into a search game.
