Product description

Trixie Plastic Drinking Bottle for Rodents and Rabbits

The Trixie Plastic Drinking Bottle is a practical drinking bottle for rodents and rabbits. The bottle is available in multiple capacities, so you can choose a size that suits the animal species, the number of animals, and the amount of water required daily.

DRD selects drinking bottles primarily based on ease of use, appropriate size, and practical placement in the enclosure. This Trixie drinking bottle is available in 50 ml, 100 ml, 250 ml, and 600 ml. This provides a small size for small rodents and a larger size for, for example, guinea pigs, rabbits, or groups of animals.

Why choose a water bottle?

A water bottle is handy when you want to offer water neatly and separately from bedding, hay, and feed. Especially in enclosures with a lot of bedding, a water bowl can become contaminated more quickly. A well-placed water bottle helps to present the drinking water in a more organized and cleaner manner.

A water bottle must be easily accessible. Hang the bottle at a height where your animal can drink comfortably, without having to stretch or bend down too far. Always check that water is coming out of the spout after hanging it up.

For some animals, a water bowl is more pleasant or natural, while others drink perfectly well from a bottle. Therefore, always observe your animal's behavior and check daily whether it is drinking properly.

Which size water bottle do you choose?

The right size depends on the animal species, the number of animals, and how often you change the water. It is best not to choose an unnecessarily large bottle for one small animal, as you will want to change the water daily anyway. For multiple animals or larger animals, a larger capacity can actually be preferable.

  • 50 ml: especially handy for very small animals such as mice or dwarf hamsters.
  • 100 ml: practical for small rodents such as hamsters, dwarf hamsters, and small groups of mice.
  • 250 ml: suitable for medium-sized animals or animals that drink a bit more, such as rats or gerbils.
  • 600 ml: handy for larger animals or groups, such as guinea pigs and rabbits.

This is a practical guideline. Drinking behavior can vary from animal to animal. Therefore, check daily whether the bottle is still sufficiently filled and whether the drinking spout is working properly.

For which animals is the Trixie Plastic Drinking Bottle suitable?

  • Mouse: suitable in a small size, such as 50 ml or 100 ml. Hang the bottle low enough so that mice can easily reach it.
  • Dwarf hamster: suitable in a small size. Carefully check if your dwarf hamster can easily operate the spout.
  • Hamster: suitable as a drinking bottle in the enclosure. Choose a size that suits the animal and change the water daily.
  • Gerbil: suitable, but preferably place the bottle so that gerbils cannot gnaw on the plastic.
  • Rat: suitable for rats, often in 250 ml or larger depending on the number of animals. Check that all rats can easily access the bottle.
  • Guinea pig: suitable in a larger size, such as 250 ml or 600 ml. Some guinea pigs prefer to drink from a bowl; observe carefully what your animals are used to.
  • Rabbit: suitable in a larger size, especially 600 ml. Check daily that the drinking spout flows properly.
  • Chinchilla: suitable, but place the bottle so that the plastic remains out of reach of the teeth.
  • Degu: suitable, with the same attention to gnawing: preferably place the bottle outside the enclosure or in a protected location.

The same applies to dwarf rats as to rats: do not choose the size based solely on the name “dwarf rat”, but on the actual size of the animals, the number of animals, and how the bottle can be placed in the enclosure.

Use for real rodents

Gerbils, chinchillas, and degus can be quite active gnawers. For these animals, it is wise to place the plastic bottle so that they cannot reach the bottle part. For example, hang the bottle on the outside of the enclosure, with only the metal drinking spout facing inwards.

Also check regularly that the bottle is still securely attached and that the spout remains accessible. In enclosures with a lot of bedding, the layout can change due to digging, meaning the drinking height sometimes needs to be readjusted.

Fits in the Trixie Wooden Drink Bottle Holder

This Trixie plastic drinking bottle is suitable for the Trixie Natural Living Wooden Drinking Bottle Holder . This is handy when you want to give the bottle a fixed place without being solely dependent on bars.

A bottle holder can be particularly practical in enclosures where hanging is difficult, or when you want to position the bottle neatly and stably. However, always check that your animal does not gnaw on the plastic bottle or the holder when it is within reach.

Drinking bottle or water bowl?

A water bottle and a water bowl both have advantages. A water bottle often keeps the water better separated from bedding and hay. A water bowl can be a more natural drinking method for some animals, but it becomes contaminated more quickly when placed in a busy area.

For guinea pigs and rabbits, it can sometimes be helpful to observe what they are used to. Some animals drink well from a bottle, while others find it easier to drink from a water bowl. The most important thing is that your animal drinks well and that clean water is offered daily.

How do you hang the water bottle properly?

  • Fill the bottle with clean water and tighten the cap securely.
  • Hang the bottle at a height where your animal can drink in a relaxed manner.
  • Check if the drinking spout points inwards and is easily accessible.
  • Test whether water comes out of the spout after hanging it up.
  • Check during the first few hours whether your animal understands and uses the bottle.
  • Change the water daily.
  • Clean the bottle and spout regularly.

Tip: Mark the water level after filling. This way, you can easily see if the bottle is actually being drunk from.

Check daily if the bottle is working

A water bottle is handy, but it must flow properly. Therefore, check daily that the spout is not clogged and that water comes out when you gently move the ball or pin. Also check that the bottle is not hanging crookedly or has come loose.

With young animals, new animals, or animals transitioning from a bowl to a bottle, extra monitoring is important. You want to be sure that they understand the water bottle and are drinking enough. If in doubt, temporarily provide a water bowl as well, so that your animal always has access to water while getting used to the bottle.

Cleaning and maintenance

Clean the water bottle regularly, even when the water still looks clear. Over time, deposits and small dirt particles can build up in a water bottle, especially in the spout. Rinse the bottle thoroughly and clean the spout carefully.

  • Change the water daily.
  • Rinse the bottle thoroughly regularly.
  • Clean the drinking spout and check if it flows properly.
  • Check the bottle for cracks, leaks, or gnawing damage.
  • Replace the bottle if it is damaged or no longer closes properly.
  • Do not use the bottle if the spout continues to leak or stops dispensing water.

Colors are supplied in assorted colors

The function remains the same, of course: be sure to choose the right capacity and place the bottle in a way that suits your animal and enclosure.
