Product description

Rodent Hammock Clara for Rodents, Rabbits & Ferrets

The Clara Rodent Hammock is a soft, double-sided hammock for animals that like to lie comfortably. One side has a warm sheepskin look and the other is smoother, allowing you to use the hammock as a cozy resting spot or as a slightly airier lying place. This makes this hammock a nice, soft spot for mice, pygmy rats, rats, guinea pigs, rabbits, chinchillas, degus, and ferrets.

For your pet, the hammock adds an extra resting place to the enclosure. Rats and mice can use the hammock as a soft sleeping spot in an active cage, while guinea pigs and rabbits can use it hung low and taut as a comfortable resting place. For chinchillas, degus, and ferrets, the largest size is particularly interesting, provided the hammock is hung securely and appropriately.

What does your pet get out of this hammock?

A hammock gives your pet an extra choice of spot in the enclosure. Instead of resting only on the floor, in a little house, or on a platform, your pet can also choose a soft spot that hangs slightly off the floor. Rats, in particular, often find such hanging spots pleasant, as they like to have multiple resting places at different heights.

For guinea pigs and rabbits, the hammock works differently: they are ground animals and use a hammock primarily as a low, soft resting place. By hanging the hammock low and taut, they can easily step onto it and lie down peacefully without having to climb.

Why owners choose this

For owners, the Clara Hammock is an easy way to add extra comfort to the enclosure. You hang it from the bars or suitable attachment points and instantly create a soft resting place. The hammock takes up little floor space and can be used low or slightly higher, depending on the animal.

At DRD, we always consider the animal's behavior when it comes to textile products. This hammock is best suited for animals that use textiles to lie in or to sleep peacefully. For animals that intensively work with soft materials, we prefer a low placement and a quiet, unobstructed spot in the enclosure.

Which size do you choose?

Choose the size based on your animal's body size and how you intend to use the hammock. For small animals, the smaller size is often sufficient. For rats, guinea pigs, rabbits, chinchillas, degus, and ferrets, the larger size is usually more comfortable, as it provides more lying space.

Mate Practical for
27 × 27 cm Mice, pygmy rats, and smaller rats as soft hanging or resting places.
37 × 37 cm Rats, guinea pigs, rabbits, chinchillas, degus, and ferrets; especially when your pet likes to have more space to lie down.

For mice: a soft hanging spot in the cage

For mice, the smaller Clara Hammock can be a soft resting place in an enclosure with multiple routes. Mice are climbing animals and enjoy using different heights. Hang the hammock so that they can easily reach it via platforms, branches, ladders, or other cage fixtures.

Combine the hammock with natural hiding places, tunnels, and nesting material, so that your mice can choose between soft, firm, sheltered, and natural material.

For dwarf rats and rats: a nice sleeping and hanging spot

For dwarf rats and rats, the Clara Hammock is a nice, soft resting place. Rats enjoy lying in hammocks together or alone and often use soft spots as their regular sleeping place. The hammock can hang higher in the cage, as long as your animals can reach it easily and safely.

When buying dwarf rats, always pay attention to the actual body size. Dwarf rats can vary from one another, so check carefully whether the chosen size provides enough space. For larger rats or groups, the largest size is usually the most practical.

For guinea pigs: hang low and taut

For guinea pigs, the largest size is particularly suitable as a soft resting place. Hang the hammock low and taut so that your guinea pig can easily get in and out of it. Guinea pigs are ground animals and do not use a hammock the way rats do; for them, the hammock must primarily be a stable and low resting spot.

Preferably use the hammock in a dry spot in the enclosure and not in a toilet area. For larger guinea pigs, it remains important to check that the hammock is spacious and stable enough for your animal.

For rabbits: soft, low resting place

For rabbits, the largest size can be used as a soft, low resting place. Hang the hammock low and taut so that your rabbit can easily step onto it. For rabbits, therefore, it is not a high hammock, but rather a slightly raised, soft lying spot.

Place the hammock in a quiet, dry corner of the enclosure or run. This way, your rabbit can choose whether to lie on the soft spot or prefer to rest on the regular ground.

For chinchillas and degus: soft extra resting place

For chinchillas and degus, the Clara Hammock can be suitable as a soft extra resting place, especially if your animals use textiles neatly. The largest size makes the most sense for these animals. Hang the hammock securely and ensure they can easily access it via platforms or a safe route.

For chinchillas and degus, sturdy platforms, wooden hiding places, branches, and gnawing material remain the foundation. A textile hammock is primarily an additional option for animals that use soft materials quietly.

For ferrets: a soft hanging or resting place

Ferrets often love soft resting spots. The larger Clara Hammock can be suitable as a soft hanging or resting place, provided the size suits your ferret and the hammock hangs securely enough. Position it so that your ferret can easily get in and out.

Ferrets can play and move around enthusiastically. Therefore, check occasionally to ensure the suspension, seams, and fabric remain neat, so that the hammock remains pleasant to use.

For which animals is the Clara Rodent Hammock suitable?

  • Mouse: suitable as a soft hangout or resting place in an enclosure with safe routes.
  • Dwarf hamster: not suitable. For dwarf hamsters, we prefer deep bedding, natural nesting material, and sturdy hiding places.
  • Hamster: not suitable. Hamsters often do not use textiles as hammocks and can drag soft materials to the nest.
  • Gerbil: not suitable. Gerbils are real destroyers and will likely gnaw textiles to pieces quickly.
  • Dwarf trellis: suitable as a soft hammock or resting place, depending on actual body size.
  • Rat: suitable as a soft sleeping place, hanging spot, or resting place in the cage.
  • Guinea pig: suitable in the largest size, hung low and taut as a soft resting place.
  • Rabbit: suitable in the largest size, hung low and taut as a soft resting place.
  • Chinchilla: suitable when using chinchilla textiles properly. Sturdy platforms and gnawing material remain the foundation.
  • Degu: suitable if your degus handle textiles neatly. Pay particular attention to whether they leave the fabric alone.
  • Ferret: suitable in the largest size as a soft hanging or resting place, provided the size and suspension fit properly.

How do you hang the Clara Hammock?

Securely attach the hammock to the bars or to suitable attachment points in the enclosure using the suspension system. Check that the hammock hangs stably and that your animal can easily get in and out of it.

Animal group Animals Practical placement
Climbing animals Mouse, pygmy rat, rat May be hung higher as part of a safe route with platforms or other boarding points.
Ground animals Guinea pig, rabbit Hang it low and taut, so that your animal can easily step on and off.
Jumping animals Chinchilla, degu Mount securely and make it accessible via platforms or a safe route.
Active animals Ferret Hang securely and ensure easy entry and exit.

Double-sided: warm side and smoother side

The Clara Hammock is double-sided. The soft sheepskin-look side feels cozy and warm. The smoother side, however, might be more comfortable if your pet prefers to lie a little less warm. This allows you to use the hammock in different ways, depending on the season, location, and your pet's preference.

That makes the hammock extra practical: one soft resting place with two different lying sensations.

Textile inspection: how to keep the hammock comfortable to use

Textiles remain most comfortable when your pet uses them to lie in or to sleep peacefully. Check occasionally to ensure the fabric, seams, and suspension remain neat. Pay particular attention to areas where your pet frequently lies, steps in, or pulls.

Do you notice your pet pulling at the fabric a lot or pulling off pieces? Then a sturdier alternative is often a better fit. Think of wooden platforms, cork tunnels, ceramic houses, sturdy baskets, or natural hiding places.

Combine with other Clara items

The Clara Hammock pairs beautifully with other soft resting spots in the same style, such as the Clara tunnel, igloo, hanging cube, or baskets. This way, you can create a complete soft resting corner for animals that like to lie comfortably.

For rats, for example, it is nice to offer multiple resting places: a hammock higher up in the cage, a tunnel on the bottom, and a small house or basket in a quiet spot. For guinea pigs and rabbits, you can combine the hammock nicely with a low tunnel, a hay corner, and a soft lying mat.

Cleaning and maintenance

The Clara hammock can be hand-washed. First, remove hair, bedding, and loose dirt. Wash the hammock gently and let it dry completely before hanging it back up.

Preferably use the hammock in a place where it does not constantly get wet. This way, it stays fresh and pleasant as a resting place for longer.

Good to know
