Product description

Brown tree trunk for hamsterscaping and natural decor

The Brown Tree Trunk is a decorative hiding place and climbing element for a naturally designed rodent enclosure. Thanks to its tree trunk shape, it fits beautifully into a hamsterscape, gerbilscape, or other natural setup where wood tones, bedding, moss, tunnels, and hiding places combine to form a harmonious whole.

With products like this, DRD likes to look at the combination of appearance and practical use. This tree trunk looks like a natural hollow trunk, but is made of synthetic resin. As a result, it is sturdier and easier to clean than real wood. The open bottom provides ventilation and makes the house easy to place on a stable layer of bedding.

Why choose the Brown Tree Trunk?

A good hiding place provides small rodents with peace, a clear view, and a safe place to retreat for a moment. This brown tree trunk also adds movement and enrichment. Animals can walk through it, shelter inside it, climb over it, or use the tree trunk as part of their regular route through the enclosure.

For pet owners, the material is particularly convenient. Resin is hard, retains its shape, and is easier to clean than natural wood. Whereas wood can absorb moisture and odors more quickly, you can gently wipe down this tree trunk or rinse it with lukewarm water. This makes it practical for a permanent setup where you want a natural look but also value easy maintenance.

The open bottom is a nice feature of a shelter. The log rests directly on the bedding, allowing your animal to determine for itself how the ground feels. At the same time, more air circulation is possible than with a completely closed house. This is especially pleasant when the log is used as a sleeping or resting place.

Which size do you choose?

The Brown Tree Trunk is available in two sizes. When choosing, consider not only the animal species, but especially the body size of your animal, the opening, and how you intend to use the tree trunk.

  • 22 cm: approx. 22 × 12 × 8 cm, with openings of approx. 4.5 × 3.5 cm. This size is particularly suitable for mice and small dwarf hamsters.
  • 28 cm: approx. 28 × 15 × 10 cm, with openings of approx. 7.5 × 5 cm. This size is more spacious and therefore more logical for dwarf hamsters, smaller hamsters, and gerbils, depending on the build of the animal.

Do you have a larger hamster or a sturdily built gerbil? Then always check carefully whether the opening is wide enough for your animal. A hiding place must be comfortably accessible, without the animal having to squeeze through the opening.

For which animals is the Brown Tree Trunk suitable?

  • Mouse: very suitable as a hiding place, passageway, and climbing object. The smaller size matches the size of mice well.
  • Dwarf hamster: suitable as a natural hiding place in a hamsterscape. Choose the size based on the size of your dwarf hamster and the desired passage.
  • Hamster: the larger size may be suitable for smaller or slimmer hamsters. With Syrian hamsters, pay extra attention to the opening and only choose a size that allows the animal to enter and exit with plenty of room and in a relaxed manner.
  • Gerbil: suitable as a decorative log, tunnel, and climbing object in a gerbilscape. Preferably choose the larger size and place the log stably on or partially in the bedding.

For pygmy rats, rats, guinea pigs, rabbits, chinchillas, and degus, this log is not the most logical hiding place, as the size and openings do not match their body size and usage well. For these animals, it is better to choose a more spacious house, tunnel, or hiding place that truly suits their size.

How do you use the tree trunk in the enclosure?

  • Place the tree trunk low and stable on the ground cover.
  • Use it as a hiding place, passageway, or natural route through the enclosure.
  • Optionally, partially incorporate it with ground cover, moss, or light natural decoration for a beautiful scape effect.
  • Ensure that all openings remain clear so that your animal can easily get in and out.
  • Regularly check whether the tree trunk is still lying stably and has no sharp damage.

For hamsterscaping and gerbilscaping, it is fun to combine the tree trunk with natural structures such as cork, moss, branches, digging substrate, and tunnels. This way, you create not only a beautiful enclosure but also a setup where your animal can choose, explore, and use different routes.

Materials and maintenance

The Brown Tree Trunk is made of synthetic resin. This is a hard and sturdy material that is less attractive to gnaw on than much softer materials. As a result, the tree trunk retains its shape well under normal use and is suitable as a permanent part of the interior design.

Preferably clean the tree trunk with lukewarm water and do not use harsh cleaning agents. Allow the product to dry thoroughly before placing it back in the enclosure. During each cleaning, immediately check whether the edges, openings, and exterior are still neat and smooth.

Good to know

Resin is practical and sturdy, but it remains important to regularly check the setup for wear and tear. Especially with animals that like to dig, push, or spend a lot of time interacting with their setup, an object can shift. Therefore, always place the tree trunk stably and prevent it from tipping over or sinking.

Do you want the tree trunk to blend in even more beautifully with a natural interior? Then place a small amount of dried moss or a light natural decoration around the tree trunk. Keep the openings clear so that your animal can continue to use the hiding place properly.

Useful shopping links

The Brown Tree Trunk is a great choice when you are looking for a natural-looking hiding place that is also practical to maintain. It provides small rodents with extra shelter, movement, and structure in the enclosure, while the interior remains calm and natural-looking.
