Cushions & Baskets for Rodents & Rabbits
A soft resting place can make your rodent or rabbit's enclosure just a little more comfortable. In this category, you will find cushions, baskets, caves, sleeping bags, soft tunnels, vet beds, and pee pads that can be used as an extra lying spot, sleeping place, or cozy resting spot.
At DRD Knaagdierwinkel®, when it comes to cushions and baskets, we don't just look at how soft or nice something looks, but above all at the animal's behavior. Not every animal understands a basket as a “resting place.” Some rodents actually view fabric as material to gnaw to pieces, drag around, or take back to the nest. That is why this category helps you choose what truly suits your animal, its enclosure, and daily use.
Rats, guinea pigs, and rabbits, in particular, can derive great pleasure from soft resting places. We prefer not to recommend textiles for dwarf hamsters, hamsters, and gerbils, as these animals often view fabric as nesting material and may gnaw it into pieces. For chinchillas and degus, textiles are only suitable if the animal does not gnaw on them and the item remains easily inspectable.
Combine soft resting areas where appropriate with good houses and hiding places , suitable bedding , and practical toilets or toilet zones. This way, you create an enclosure that is comfortable, logically laid out, and easy to keep clean.

Frequently Asked Questions
For true sleepers
Rats, guinea pigs, and rabbits often genuinely use soft spots as resting places. Think of a basket, cave, sleeping bag, mat, or vet bed.
Comfort and control
Soft items should be comfortable to lie on, but also easy to check for wear, fraying, loose threads, and chewing damage.
Not for every rodent
Dwarf hamsters, hamsters, and gerbils often mistake dust for nesting material. For these animals, natural hiding places are usually a better choice.
What do you find in this category?
This category features soft resting products for rodents and rabbits. Some baskets are primarily intended as open resting places, while a cave, sleeping bag, or soft tunnel provides more shelter. A vet bed or pee mat is practical when you are looking for a soft, washable surface.
Cushions and baskets
Cushions and baskets are soft resting places for animals that like to relax on a comfortable surface. They are especially nice in a quiet corner of the enclosure, in a run, or at a designated resting spot where your pet likes to lie down.
Caves, igloos and sleeping bags
Caves, igloos, and sleeping bags provide more shelter. They are suitable for animals that like to hide away, lie warm, or choose a cozy sleeping spot. Rats and pygmy rats, in particular, greatly appreciate these types of soft sleeping places.
Vet beds and pee pads
Vet beds and pee pads are practical when you are looking for a soft, washable surface. They can be useful for guinea pigs and rabbits, for example as a resting place in an indoor enclosure, run, or resting corner. Always pay attention to the correct size and check regularly that the material remains clean.
Soft tunnels and tents
Soft tunnels and tents combine rest, shelter, and a bit of exploration. They are especially suitable for animals that use textiles neatly and do not actively gnaw through them.
For which animals are cushions and baskets suitable?
You should always choose cushions and baskets based on size, behavior, and material. Below, you can see how best to evaluate this category by animal group.
- Mouse: Textiles are usually not a first choice for mice. Mice like to build nests and can pull up fabric, gnaw through it, or use it as nesting material. It is better to choose safe nesting materials, natural hiding places, tunnels, and climbing structures. Only very small, easily inspectable textile items may be acceptable, provided the mice do not gnaw on them.
- Dwarf hamster: we prefer not to recommend textiles for dwarf hamsters. They usually do not understand the concept of a “basket” as we mean it and may perceive fabric as nesting material that they gnaw to pieces and take to their burrow. It is better to choose deep bedding, a sturdy house, a sand bath, tunnels, and natural nesting material.
- Hamster: textiles are usually not practical for hamsters either. A hamster can gnaw through fabric, tear it into pieces, and drag it to the nest. A good hamster enclosure revolves primarily around deep bedding, a sturdy multi-chambered house or small house, a sand bath, a running wheel, tunnels, and safe nesting material.
- Gerbil: We do not recommend cushions and baskets for gerbils. Gerbils gnaw a lot and can quickly destroy textiles. For gerbils, gnaw-proof houses, tunnels, sand, branches, and a sturdy digging substrate are a better choice.
- Dwarf rat: Dwarf rats can find soft caves, sleeping bags, and small baskets very comfortable. Because dwarf rats can vary in size, always choose based on actual body size, entrance, and room to move. Check textiles regularly for gnawing damage.
- Rat: Rats are true comfort seekers. Sleeping bags, caves, soft tunnels, baskets, and resting places are often used with pleasure. However, regularly check textiles for fraying, loose threads, and gnawing damage, especially with young or active rats.
- Guinea pig: Guinea pigs like to lie on soft, dry places. Vet beds, pee pads, low baskets, and soft resting spots can be nice, especially in a quiet resting area or indoor enclosure. Choose spacious enough so that your guinea pig can lie down comfortably.
- Rabbit: Rabbits can use soft cushions, mats, baskets, or vet beds as extra resting places. Pay particular attention to size, washability, and gnawing behavior. A rabbit must have plenty of room to lie down and always be able to choose between soft and cooler surfaces.
- Chinchilla: for chinchillas, textiles are only suitable if the animal does not gnaw on them and the item remains easily inspectable. Chinchillas primarily need dry, well-ventilated resting places, sturdy platforms, and a suitable sand bath.
- Degu: The same applies to degus: only use textiles if they do not gnaw on them. Many degus gnaw actively, which can make soft baskets or cushions less suitable. Sturdy hiding places, platforms, sand, and gnawing material usually suit their natural behavior better.
Why textiles are not suitable for every animal
To us, a basket looks like a soft resting place, but an animal views such an item based on its own behavior. Rats, guinea pigs, and rabbits often genuinely use a soft spot to rest. Dwarf hamsters, hamsters, and gerbils usually do things differently. They like to drag material to their nest, gnaw on it, or incorporate it into their burrow.
That is why, in this category, we deliberately do not state that cushions and baskets are suitable “for all rodents.” A hamster or gerbil benefits much more from a good digging layer, a sturdy house, safe tunnels, a sand bath, and suitable nesting material. A soft basket adds little value in this regard and can actually be gnawed to pieces.
DRD selection guide: when to use it and when not?
✓ Makes sense for many rats, guinea pigs, and rabbits as a soft resting place
✓ Sometimes suitable for dwarf rats, depending on size and gnawing behavior
✓ Only under control for mice, chinchillas, and degus when they are not gnawing on it
✓ Preferably not for dwarf hamsters, hamsters, and gerbils
✓ Always remove in case of fraying, loose threads, holes, or chewed-up fabric
How do you choose the right cushion, basket, or vet bed?
Start with your animal's behavior. Does your animal like to lie stretched out? Then an open cushion, mat, or vet bed is often a good fit. Does your animal prefer to hide away? Then a cave, igloo, sleeping bag, or soft tunnel makes more sense. Does your animal tend to pull on or gnaw on textiles? Then you would be better off choosing a different type of resting place, such as a wooden, ceramic, or plastic house.
Selection check: how to choose wisely
- Size: your animal must be able to lie down, turn over, or curl up comfortably.
- Type of resting spot: choose open for lying stretched out and sheltered for curling up.
- Animal behavior: use textiles only with animals that use them neatly and do not actively gnaw them to pieces.
- Washability: check the washing label and, for daily use, preferably choose something that is easy to clean.
- Position in the enclosure: preferably place soft items on a dry, stable spot and not in the fixed toilet corner.
- Material inspection: regularly check for fraying, holes, loose threads, and gnawing damage.
- Spare copy: for guinea pigs, rabbits, and rats, a second copy is handy so you can switch during washing.
Hygiene & maintenance
Soft resting places remain most comfortable when you check them regularly and wash them on time. How often this is necessary depends on the animal species, the number of animals, the location in the enclosure, and whether your animal urinates on it. A basket that is primarily used as a dry sleeping place often stays fresh longer than a mat placed in a frequently used corner.
For guinea pigs and rabbits, vet beds and pee pads are often practical because you can change and wash them. For rats, it is useful to have multiple sleeping bags or caves, as rats can make intensive use of soft sleeping areas. Allow washed textiles to dry thoroughly before putting them back.
Good to know
Textiles in a rodent or rabbit enclosure always require regular inspection. A cushion, basket, or sleeping bag must remain clean, free from frayed edges, loose filling, sharp edges, or threads that an animal could get entangled in.
Do you notice your animal gnawing on the material a lot, pulling at it, or loosening pieces of fabric? Then remove the item from the enclosure and choose a sturdy house, natural hiding place, or other furnishings that better suit its behavior.

Frequently asked questions about cushions and baskets
Are cushions and baskets suitable for all rodents?
No, not for all rodents. Rats, guinea pigs, and rabbits often enjoy using soft resting places. For dwarf hamsters, hamsters, and gerbils, we prefer not to recommend textiles, as they often gnaw through fabric or take it back to their nest.
Why do you prefer not to recommend textiles for hamsters?
Hamsters usually do not see a basket as a basket. They can gnaw through fabric, pull it loose, and take it to their nest. For hamsters, deep bedding, a sturdy house, a sand bath, tunnels, and safe nesting material make much more sense.
Are cushions and baskets suitable for gerbils?
We prefer not to recommend cushions and baskets for gerbils. Gerbils gnaw a lot and can quickly destroy textiles. A sturdy digging substrate, tunnels, sand, and gnaw-proof houses are better suited to their behavior.
Can a rabbit lie on a cushion or basket?
Yes, many rabbits enjoy a soft resting place. Do choose a generous size, place it in a dry spot, and check that your rabbit doesn't gnaw on it too much.
Are vet beds useful for guinea pigs?
Vetbeds can be handy as a soft, washable resting place for guinea pigs. This can be especially pleasant in a quiet corner or indoor enclosure. Just make sure you can change and wash them.
Are sleeping bags suitable for rats?
Yes, many rats like to use sleeping bags, caves, and soft tunnels as sleeping places. However, do check regularly for gnawing damage and wash the sleeping bag in time.
Can textiles be used for chinchillas or degus?
Only when the animal does not gnaw on it and you can properly inspect the material. Chinchillas and degus can actively gnaw, making sturdy platforms, hiding places, sand, and gnawing material often a better base.
Where do I put a cushion or basket in the enclosure?
Preferably place a soft resting spot in a dry, stable, and quiet place. Do not place it in the fixed toilet corner or in a place where it quickly gets wet or dirty.
What do I do if my pet chews on the pillow?
Remove the item from the enclosure as soon as you see fraying, loose threads, holes, loose filling, or chewed-up fabric. It is better to choose a sturdy house or another resting place that better suits your animal's behavior.
