Platforms are very handy accessories for the hamster cage. With a platform you can, for example, create an extra floor in the cage. This gives your hamster extra play and living space. Hamsters always appreciate that! In addition, a platform provides a stable place to put water or food and the ground cover can be built up nice and high. If a platform is still too high, a ladder is very handy to give the hamster easy access to the higher part.
We recommend a solid ladder for most hamster species. Unfortunately, hamsters are not good climbers, so an open ladder will be more difficult for them. An exception to this is the Chinese Dwarf Hamster, which can climb reasonably well.
Why are platforms important in a hamster enclosure?
Platforms provide extra living space in height. They offer a safe resting place and a nice overview for your hamster. Ideal for sitting, sleeping or eating snacks!
Are platforms suitable for all hamsters?
Yes, both dwarf hamsters and Syrian hamsters can enjoy a plateau. Note: for dwarf hamsters, low plateaus are safer, in any case place these close to the ground cover. Always provide sufficient grip and a safe height.
Can I use a platform to place a running wheel or feeding bowl on?
Definitely! A sturdy platform is perfect for a running wheel, food bowl or water bottle. This keeps the ground cover clean and everything is clearly arranged.
Can hamsters climb well?
Hamsters are not real climbers like rats, but with wide, stable ladders or ramps they can easily bridge small heights. Always provide sufficient grip.
How do I clean a hamster tray or ladder?
Use a damp cloth or a pet-friendly cleaner without chemical odors. Let wooden materials dry thoroughly before replacing them. For urine stains, use a urine spray .
What is the benefit of ladders for hamsters?
Ladders help your hamster to get from one level to another safely (not too high). They allow vertical movement, stimulate activity and make the enclosure more challenging. Especially for Syrian Hamsters and Chinese Dwarf Hamsters, because these species are better climbers. The other dwarf hamster species are absolutely no climbers.
Are ladders safe for my hamster?
Yes, as long as they are stable and made of safe materials (such as wood without sharp edges). For dwarf hamsters, flat, wide ladders with grips are best. Not too high, not too steep.
