The Trixie Wooden Rabbit Digging Box Blank 58 cm is a spacious digging box for dwarf rabbits and smaller rabbits who enjoy digging, sniffing, and being active. Indoor rabbits, in particular, do not always get the chance to exhibit natural digging behavior. With a separate digging box, you give your rabbit a designated area where that behavior is allowed.
The digging box is made of wood and plexiglass, has two entrances and exits, and a lid that helps keep the filling better contained. The plexiglass plate allows you to watch along when your rabbit digs. This makes the box not only practical for enrichment but also fun for observing your animal more closely.
✔ Provides dwarf rabbits and smaller rabbits with their own digging spot
✔ Two entrances and exits, convenient for visibility and freedom of movement
✔ Plexiglas viewing window to monitor digging behavior
✔ Lid helps keep the filling better in the container
✔ Handy for indoor use, for example in a rabbit room or run
✔ Can also be used as a spacious sniffing or play box for some rodents
Digging is part of natural rabbit behavior. Outdoors, rabbits can sometimes dig in soil or sand, but indoors, that opportunity is often not available naturally. A digging box gives your rabbit a designated area where digging is allowed. This helps them expend energy, sniff around, explore, and stay occupied.
For indoor rabbits, a digging box is particularly valuable because it accommodates behavior that might otherwise develop in less convenient places. Think of digging in blankets, pillows, corners, or bedding. By creating a separate digging zone, you give your rabbit a better choice.
The Trixie Wooden Digging Box has a practical shape. Thanks to the lid construction, the filling stays in the box better than with an open bowl. The plexiglass makes it extra fun to watch your rabbit sniff, dig, and move the filling around.
This digging box is not the most logical choice for guinea pigs. Guinea pigs do not dig like rabbits and usually benefit more from spacious hiding places, tunnels, hay corners, and foraging areas. This box is too small for larger rabbit breeds; in that case, choose a larger digging zone or a more spacious solution instead.
Assemble the digging box using the plug-in system and check that all panels are securely fastened. Place the box on a flat, stable surface. Because sand or other filling is used, a fixed spot in the run, rabbit room, or play area is often the most convenient.
Fill the container with an appropriate layer of filling. Cleaned play sand is a good choice for rabbits. Do not fill the container unnecessarily heavily, but high enough so that your rabbit can really dig. For small rodents that want to make tunnels, digging sand often works better because it retains more structure than loose play sand.
Always use the digging box under supervision, especially with animals that may gnaw on wood or plexiglass. After use, check that the box is still sturdy and that no sharp edges or damage have developed.
For rabbits, cleaned play sand is usually the most logical choice. It feels natural, encourages digging, and is suitable for creating a real digging spot. It is best not to use dusty, sharp, or contaminated sand.
For small rodents that really want to make tunnels or burrows, digging sand might be a better fit. This type of sand holds its shape better, which can make it more interesting for animals that want to dig and build.
It is best not to use fine sand for rats. Rats have sensitive airways and do not bathe in sand. If you want to use the box for rats, turn it into a dry sniffing box or ratscaping box using pieces of cardboard, paper, foraging material, or other suitable dry filling.
Use moist fillings such as humus or coconut only with caution. Wood and moisture are not an ideal combination if the bin remains wet for extended periods. If you wish to work with slightly damp filling, monitor ventilation, mold formation, and drying very carefully. For beginners, a dry filling or play sand is often more practical.
For indoor rabbits, a digging box can be a great addition to their daily enrichment. You can place the box in a rabbit room, run, or permanent play area, for example. Not every rabbit immediately understands what the purpose is. Some rabbits start digging right away, while others first sniff around and get used to it.
You can make the box more interesting by hiding a few herbs, blades of hay, or small reward treats in it. This way, it becomes not just a digging spot, but also a foraging moment. Keep the amount of treats small and let the searching be the fun part.
The plexiglass viewing window is a nice detail, as you can watch along without opening the tank. At the same time, plexiglass is more fragile than wood. Therefore, handle it with care during assembly, moving, and cleaning.
The wood looks its best when allowed to remain dry. Do not leave wet or damp filling in the bin for extended periods. Check the seams, bottom, and corners regularly. If you see damp spots, a musty odor, mold growth, sharp edges, or strong gnaw marks, clean the bin or replace it when necessary.
Regularly scoop soiled filling out of the bin and replace the contents when they are no longer fresh. Preferably clean the wood dry with a brush or cloth. Use slightly damp cleaning only when necessary, and allow the bin to dry completely before refilling it.
Regularly check the plexiglass, openings, lid, and wooden parts for wear. Pay particular attention to sharp edges, loose parts, and gnaw marks. Supervision is important for active rodents, as wood and plexiglass are not intended as gnawing material.
The Trixie Wooden Digging Bucket is a great fit for natural enrichment and daily activity. You can combine it with:
The Trixie Wooden Digging Box is intended for supervised use. The plexiglass is thinner and more fragile than the wooden parts, so handle assembly, moving, and cleaning with care. This digging box is too small for larger rabbit breeds. Preferably use dry or well-fitting filling and prevent the wood from remaining wet for extended periods. Check regularly for wear, gnaw marks, and sharp edges.
The digging box is particularly suitable for dwarf rabbits and smaller rabbits. Additionally, depending on the filling, it can be used under supervision as a sniffing, playing, or digging box for some rodents.
The dimensions are approximately 58 × 38 × 30 cm.
No, this digging box is too small for larger rabbit breeds. For large rabbits, it is better to choose a more spacious digging area or a larger solution.
Cleaned play sand is a good choice for rabbits. It is suitable for digging and sniffing. Check the tray regularly and replace the filling when it becomes dirty or damp.
Yes, but for rats, preferably use it as a dry sniffing or ratscaping box with cardboard, paper, or foraging material. Do not use fine sand for rats.
Yes, as an extra digging box outside the enclosure and under supervision. In a very spacious enclosure, it can sometimes also be used as a separate digging zone, provided the box is stable and properly monitored.
This is only possible with extra care, as wood and moisture do not mix ideally if the filling remains wet for a long time. For beginners, play sand, digging sand, or a dry sniffing filling is often more practical.
You can watch along while digging through the plexiglass. It is a nice observation window, but more fragile than wood. Therefore, check it regularly and handle the container with care.
Scoop soiled filling out of the bin and clean the wood, preferably dry. Use only slightly damp cleaning agents when necessary and allow the bin to dry completely before refilling it.
The Trixie Wooden Rabbit Digging Box Natural 58 cm is a great choice for owners who want to give their dwarf or small rabbit its own digging spot. Thanks to the viewing window, the two entrances, and the lid, you make digging a clear, fun, and more manageable part of the indoor setup.
