For which animals is the Hamtaro Feed & Drink System suitable?

• Mouse: suitable as a compact feeding and drinking system. The combination of feeding station, water bottle, and small sheltered opening fits well with small mouse enclosures.
• Dwarf hamster: suitable as a feeding and drinking spot. Check if your dwarf hamster can easily reach the drinking opening and comfortably use the small hiding place.
• Hamster: not suitable as a complete solution. For Syrian hamsters, the hiding hole in particular is too small; it is better to choose a more spacious house and a separate, suitable drinking system.

Why not for gerbils?

Gerbils are true gnawers and can work extensively on materials. The Hamtaro is made of hard plastic, but for gerbils, the less protected water bottle is a particular concern. Therefore, for gerbils, we prefer a sturdier drinking system that is better protected against gnawing.

For gerbils, a separate, well-protected water bottle or a sturdy water bowl is often a better choice, combined with a separate food bowl or foraging moments in the bedding.

Why not for Syrian hamsters?

For Syrian hamsters, the system as a whole is too compact. In particular, the hiding place opening of approx. Ø 4.5 cm is too small for comfortable use. A hamster must be able to easily pass through an opening, even with filled cheek pouches. Therefore, we recommend a larger house and a separate, matching water bottle or bowl for Syrian hamsters.

The Hamtaro can be practical for dwarf hamsters, provided you carefully check that your animal can easily reach the drinking opening and uses the system comfortably.

How do you install the system?

Place the Hamtaro on a flat, stable spot in the enclosure. Ensure that the drinking opening is easily accessible and that your animal does not have to climb to drink. Do not place the system in a location where a lot of bedding ends up in the food bowl.

Check drinking bottle

Check daily whether the water bottle is working properly. Tap the ball briefly to see if water comes out and check if the water level drops normally. This way, you can be sure that your animal can drink.

Clean the bottle regularly and change the water on time. The bottle can be removed from the holder, making cleaning and refilling easier.

Cleaning and maintenance

Clean the plastic part regularly with lukewarm water and a soft brush or cloth. Rinse thoroughly and let everything dry before putting the system back. Also clean the drinking bottle and the drinking spout well so that no food residue or deposits remain.

Regularly check the system for wear, gnaw marks, and sharp edges. Do not use the system if parts are damaged or the drinking bottle is no longer functioning properly.
