The Puppy Potty Training Mat Nappy is an absorbent mat originally developed for puppies, but it can also be very useful as an extra protective layer for rodents and rabbits. At DRD, we primarily use this type of mat as a backup under a bottom mat, fleece blanket, fleece section, or pee pad. In this way, the mat helps to absorb moisture should any spillage through the top layer.
Important to know: this litter training mat is not intended to be placed loosely in the enclosure. If animals can reach it, they may drag it around, gnaw on it, or pull the mat out from under the fleece. In that case, the mat loses its function. Therefore, always use the Nappy covered, for example under a blanket, under a washable floor mat, or as an extra layer in a transport box.
✔ Ideal as an extra underlayer under fleece, floor mats, and pee pads
✔ Absorbs moisture well as a backup layer
✔ Helps better protect the surface against leakage
✔ Made with long-fiber, natural cellulose
✔ Handy in the transport box, for example during a visit to the vet
✔ Practical for guinea pigs, rabbits, rats, and ferrets when the mat is covered
With washable floor mats, fleece blankets, and pee pads, you want moisture to be absorbed effectively. Especially for guinea pigs, rabbits, rats, or ferrets, an extra underlayer can be useful in areas where a lot of urination occurs. The Puppy Potty Training Mat Nappy serves as an absorbent backup between the top layer and the base.
For example, use the mat under a fleece blanket in a guinea pig enclosure, under a washable floor mat in a rabbit run, or under a pee pad in a fixed litter box. The mat can also be handy in a transport crate, as it absorbs moisture during a car ride or a visit to the vet. In that case, preferably place a layer of fleece, a towel, or another suitable top layer over it so that your animal cannot pull directly on the mat.
The strength of this mat therefore lies not in standalone use, but rather in the smart layering. On top lies a comfortable and pet-friendly layer. Beneath that lies the Nappy as extra protection. This keeps the setup more organized, hygienic, and easier to monitor.
This mat is not suitable as bedding for mice, dwarf hamsters, hamsters, gerbils, chinchillas, and degus. These animals require appropriate bedding that aligns with their natural behavior, such as digging, walking, dust-free nesting, or dry living. Use the Nappy with these animals only temporarily and fully covered to protect a surface, for example, during brief supervision outside the enclosure.
Lay the Nappy Puppy Potty Training Mat flat on the floor or on the spot you want to protect extra. Place a fleece blanket, floor mat, pee pad, or other suitable textile over it. Ensure that the top layer covers the Nappy well, including the edges. This prevents animals from easily grabbing, shifting, or tearing the mat.
Use the mat primarily in areas where extra absorption is needed. Think of a designated toilet corner, under a hay bed, under a favorite resting spot, or in a part of the run where urination occurs more frequently. Replace the mat as soon as it is clearly damp, dirty, or saturated.
An absorbent underlay can be pleasant in a transport box, for example during a car ride, check-up, or vet visit. Place the Nappy under a layer of fleece, a towel, or a suitable transport mat. This keeps the box better protected and ensures your pet does not lie directly on the disposable mat.
Always check after transport whether the mat has remained dry and intact. Discard a used or damp mat and clean the transport box before using it again.
With guinea pigs, rabbits, rats, and ferrets, you often see that certain spots in the enclosure are used more frequently for urinating. A Nappy can help with this as an extra layer under the top mat. This does not mean that the mat replaces the toilet, but it can provide extra protection under areas that get wet quickly.
Additionally, use a suitable toilet or litter box whenever possible. Place droppings and wet bedding in the toilet area so that your animal learns to recognize that spot better. Especially for rabbits and ferrets, a clearly marked toilet area can make a big difference in daily maintenance.
The potty training mat is made with long-fiber, natural cellulose and has an absorbent core. The edge is sealed to better limit leakage. As a result, the mat is particularly suitable as a practical protective layer under another top layer.
Because the mat is not intended as gnawing material, hiding material, or loose bedding, it must be kept out of reach of teeth and paws. Covered use is therefore the correct application.
Do not use the Nappy Puppy Potty Training Mat loose in the enclosure. Always place the mat under a blanket, fleece, floor mat, or pee pad. Regularly check that the top layer is still in place and that your pet cannot reach the mat. Replace the mat if it is wet, dirty, or damaged. If your pet does manage to get to the mat or drag it around, secure it underneath the top layer or choose another solution.
No, we do not recommend that. The mat is intended as an underlay and must be covered with, for example, fleece, a floor mat, or a pee pad. Using it loosely can cause animals to drag it around or gnaw on it.
Yes, this is actually a handy application. Place the Nappy under the fleece blanket as an extra absorbent backup, especially in places where your guinea pigs often pee.
Yes, that is possible. Use the mat under a floor mat, rug, or pee pad and make sure your rabbit cannot grab the edges.
No, this mat is not suitable as bedding for hamsters and gerbils. They need thick, diggable bedding that suits their natural behavior.
Yes, the mat is handy as an absorbent underlay in a transport box. Preferably, place a fleece, towel, or transport mat over it so that your animal does not sit directly on the Nappy.
Replace the mat as soon as it is damp, dirty, damaged, or saturated. Check this regularly, especially for persistent urine spots.
The Puppy Potty Training Mat Nappy is a practical extra layer for owners who want more protection under fleece, floor mats, or pee pads. Do not use it on its own, but rather cleverly covered as an absorbent backup. This keeps the enclosure or transport box better protected and makes maintenance more manageable.
