Choosing a Gerbil Transport Box – Quick Selection Guide
Gerbils are fast, curious, and can be surprisingly vigorous gnawers. So, choose a cage that's close , ventilated , and spacious . In this category, you'll find compact models like the Europet Touring (14.5 cm) and various sizes of the Trixie Pico Transport Box (18/23/30 cm) , plus a more spacious Trixie Mini-Capri (40 cm) .
1) Short trip / 1 gerbil (compact)
- Handy for pick-up, short car ride or a quick check at the vet.
- Please note: always supervise gerbils that are keen to gnaw and check the box for damage.
2) 1–2 gerbils (more comfort)
- More space to sit stably and less “sliding” when cornering.
- Practical in the waiting room: you can add a little bit of ground cover without it all blowing away immediately.
3) Duo or extra space (spacious model)
- This is useful if you are transporting two gerbils together and you want to create some peace and quiet with a small hiding place.
- Also useful as a temporary “shelter” during cleaning (short-term).
Tip : Traveling with a duo? Keep them together (familiar scents) if possible, unless you absolutely have to separate them due to disagreements or medical reasons.
When do you need a gerbil transport box?
- Veterinarian visit (safe and controlled transport).
- Picking up new gerbils (low-stress and escape-proof).
- Cleaning the accommodation: just set it aside without any hassle.
- Emergency situation : temporarily separate in case of tension in the group.
- Pairing (only as part of a well-thought-out plan and always under supervision).
Gerbil-proof packing – for a more relaxed journey
- Place a thin layer of gerbil bedding in the box (non-slip and with a familiar scent).
- Add a small piece of nesting material : this immediately gives a “nesting feeling”.
- Add a small piece of gnawing wood (distraction and prevents gnawing on edges).
- It's best not to use a water bowl during transport (spills are a risk). For short trips, this isn't necessary; for longer waits, consider a watery snack (e.g., a small piece of cucumber).
- Place the box in a stable position (seat belt/solid surface) and, if necessary, partially cover it with a cloth for rest, but allow ventilation.

FAQ – gerbil transport boxes
Which transport box is most suitable for gerbils?
Choose a box that closes securely and is well-ventilated. For short trips, a more compact model might be fine; for a duo or for extra comfort, a more spacious box is often preferable.
Can gerbils chew through a carrier?
Gerbils can chew on plastic, especially when stressed or bored. Therefore, choose a sturdy material, add a small gnawing stick, and never leave your animals unattended in the cage.
Can I use the transport box while cleaning the enclosure?
Yes, that's actually helpful. Place some bedding and nesting material in the box and place it in a quiet location. For longer stays, a spare cage or collection tray is more suitable.
What do I put in the transport box?
A thin layer of bedding, a tuft of nesting material, and perhaps a small piece of gnawing wood. Avoid loose, heavy items that could slide or fall during transport.
