A chinchilla house is the perfect hideaway for daytime rest and a sense of security. In this category, you'll find houses and hideaways carefully selected based on size, material, and finish. Specialists since 2011, you won't find a "random assortment" but choices tailored to chinchillas: sturdy, verifiable products and clear selection guides.
What types of chinchilla houses can you find here?
- ✔ Aluminum chinchilla house – rodent-proof and durable.
- ✔ Wooden houses (preferably nail-free) – of course, but always check regularly.
- ✔ Willow bridges & willow houses – shelter and climb in one.
- Haylofts /grass or seagrass models – nice for variation; faster wear is normal.
What do you use a chinchilla house for?
A chinchilla house can be used as a permanent hiding place (daytime rest), as an additional route within the enclosure (tunnel/bridge), and as part of a logical cage layout. By offering multiple houses and hiding places, you give your animals a choice: whether to lie together or to be separated. This helps keep the enclosure organized and calm, especially in groups.
Essential next to every house: offer plenty of safe branches and gnawing products.

Selection guide: choosing a chinchilla house
- ✔ Number of animals : the guideline is one hiding place per chinchilla + one extra.
- ✔ Gnawing behaviour : in the case of fanatic gnawing, aluminium is often the most practical choice.
- ✔ Space & layout : distribute hiding places throughout the enclosure to create more peace and quiet within the group.
How do you place a chinchilla house?
✔ Place houses stably and preferably partly at a height.
✔ Create logical walking routes (platforms/bridges) so that animals can pass each other.
✔ After the first few days, check new items extra carefully for gnaw marks and wear.
Checklist
✔ Spacious enough for your chinchilla(s) and easy to turn around in.
✔ Good finish: no splinters, sharp edges or loose parts.
✔ Fits your layout: routes, plateaus and “passing” are possible.
✔ Material suits gnawing behaviour (gnawing-resistant or deliberately gnawing).
✔ Easy to inspect and keep clean.
Hygiene & maintenance
Clean houses regularly and keep them dry. Aluminum is easy to clean; check wood and willow for wear and tear and replace them as soon as they're no longer clean. Gnawing houses made of hay or grass are meant to be eaten: replace them regularly and always combine them with plenty of safe gnawing material and fresh bedding.
Safety (important)
✔ It is especially important for chinchillas that houses do not contain nails or staples .
✔ Preferably choose untreated material and regularly inspect for splinters, loose parts and sharp edges.
✔ Replace a house whenever its safety or stability becomes questionable.
FAQ – frequently asked questions
Is “chinchilla house” or “chinchilla cottage” better?
You'll see both variations in Google. Therefore, consistently use both terms on the page: "chinchilla house" and "chinchilla house."
When do I choose aluminum?
If you want a long lasting, gnaw-proof solution, or if wooden houses are quickly gnawed to pieces.
How many hiding places are ideal?
At least one per animal, plus one extra. This way, each chinchilla always has somewhere quiet to sit.
