The Trixie Crooked & Askew Ladder 58 cm is a playful ladder for real climbers such as mice, rats, and birds. The ladder is not sleek and straight, but rather a bit crooked and askew. This makes it fun as a climbing route, a challenge, and an extra enrichment in the enclosure.
The ladder is made of natural wood and rope. Due to its flexible, natural shape, animals have to think more carefully about their route than with a standard straight ladder. You can use it as a connection between platforms, hammocks, branches, or other resting places. Especially when combining multiple climbing elements, a richer enclosure is created in which animals can climb, clamber, balance, and explore.
✔ Made of natural wood and rope
✔ Extra challenge due to the playful, irregular shape
✔ Suitable for real climbers such as mice, rats, and birds
✔ Makes routes between platforms, hammocks, and branches more interesting
✔ Encourages climbing, scrambling, balancing, and exploring
✔ Also fun as a gnawing and play element for animals that like to explore
A standard ladder is primarily a straight route from bottom to top. This ladder is different. Due to its playful, irregular shape, animals have to place their paws just a little more deliberately. This makes climbing more interesting and provides more of a challenge in the enclosure.
For mice, such a ladder can be a nice climbing route between different levels. For rats, it can serve as a stepping stone, intermediate jump, or playful element between platforms and hammocks. For birds, the ladder can be used as a climbing and perching route in the cage or aviary.
The ladder does not necessarily have to be used solely as a “steps.” Some animals crawl through it, use it as a route along the wall, or nibble on it. This aligns well with natural exploratory behavior.
For dwarf hamsters, hamsters, and gerbils, this ladder is usually less logical as a permanent fixture. These animals use height differently and benefit more from low routes, tunnels, bedding, hiding places, and landscaping material. This ladder is not intended for guinea pigs, rabbits, and ferrets. For chinchillas and degus, the ladder is less suitable as a standard climbing element due to the rope and mobility; for these animals, it is better to choose sturdy platforms, branches, and ladders that are clearly designed for their weight and gnawing power.
The greatest added value is created when you do not hang the ladder loosely in the enclosure, but use it as part of a route. Think of a connection between a platform and a hammock, between two wooden components, or along the side of the enclosure.
For mice, you can place multiple climbing elements closer together to create a playful network. For rats, it is important to combine the ladder with sturdy support points. For example, use the ladder as an additional route alongside platforms, branches, or ropes, and not as the only route to a high point.
For birds, you can combine the ladder with perches, ropes, and other bird toys. Make sure the ladder does not get in the way when the bird spreads its wings and that your bird can easily step on and off.
Hang the ladder securely and check that it cannot come loose in a dangerous way. Because the ladder is lopsided, it may feel more wobbly than a straight, fixed ladder. That is precisely part of the challenge, but the foundation must be safe.
Always ensure fall protection under the ladder. For example, use bedding, platforms, hammocks, or other soft and safe elements under the climbing route. Do not place the ladder above hard food bowls, water bowls, sharp objects, or open fall points.
For rats, it is wise not to hang the ladder too steeply. An angled or slightly curved placement often works better than an almost vertical setup. This way, it remains a route, not a jump or a climbing test.
The Trixie Crooked & Rugged Ladder is made of natural wood and rope. The natural material fits beautifully into an enclosure with wooden platforms, branches, tunnels, and other climbing elements. Because wood is a natural product, color, shape, and structure may vary slightly from ladder to ladder.
Wood and rope can wear down with use. Inspection is especially important for animals that like to gnaw or pull. Gnaw marks are part of natural use, but the ladder must remain sturdy and safe.
Preferably clean the ladder dry with a brush or cloth. If the ladder gets dirty locally, use only a slightly damp cloth and allow the wood and rope to dry completely before using it again.
Regularly check that the ropes are still firm, that the rungs are securely fastened, and that no sharp edges, splinters, or loose parts are developing. Replace the ladder when it becomes frayed, unstable, or damaged.
The Trixie Crooked Ladder is a good fit for an active climbing and route setup. You can combine it with:

grappig ding. de ratjes waren in het begin heel nieuwschierig maar ze maken er weinig tot geen gebruik van omdat het te wiebelig is. wel vinden ze het leuk om er doorheen te kruipen. vult de kooi mooi op.
Super leuk om aan te knagen
Ziet er leuk en speels uit in de kooi, alleen maken de ratjes er weinig gebruik van.
